Katrina has whacked the US economy and this is the first big numbered indicator.
----------------
US jobless claims at 10-year high -
The US Labor Department said 71,000 people signed up for benefits last week - with 68,000 of those claims directly attributable to the effect of Katrina.
The increase is more than was seen after the 11 September terror attacks.
-----------------
I wonder how long it will take before the usual suspects start calling it the "Bush Economy" or the worst economy in 50 years or some other nonsense.
-
Why didn't Bush create jobs? Imagine, he could have put all those claiming benefits to work cleaning up. How to pay for them? Why with oil of course!

Uing this as an indicator for the overall economy is bogus. The jobs issue is a short term situation for the ones related to Katrina.
(You're right this rolly eye is definately not as good as the original!)

ROTFLMAO :rofl

Fix some of the joblessness and build some refineries. If tree huggers or activists get in their way, squish em. Dont think they can stop a 'dozer with their squishy bodies.

Fortunately, we don't need to wonder how long it will be before the usual suspects create their own little scenario to rage against. The real question is; how long will it take Gunslinger to get here?

not too long I guess
Personally.....I dont care. I have really given up on Bush and could really care less what he does anymore.
The economy is going to take a hit for sure. I'm just hoping the housing market doesn't go bust before March (I'm buying a house in San Antonio in march)
Heck he should just cut a trillion in taxes then spend a couple hundred billion here and a couple hundred billion there a few more times and all will be good right?

Actually while it may be a hit on the economy I think it will be a short term hit that in the end will result in a positive for the economy.
All that rebuilding will have to mean job creation. Increased sales in building supplies in everything that goes with it
And what investor in his right mind wouldnt want to develop in N.O.?
Its only one of the most famous cities in the world
Mark my words. In the end this will turn out to be a boom and like it or not. "Boosh" is going to come out of it smelling like roses

That could happen. I heard a talking head make some good sense today in that one positive effect of these "evacuees" is that they have been dispersed out so much that this impact might be short lived and they may be better off for the most part.

What if the industry doesn't want to build new refinieries? How many did it shout down after 1980 deregulation? 150 or so of the 300 or so we had? No tree huggers involved in that.
They may want to build one or two in today's market, but overcapacity doesn't make much business sense.

Joblessness is an illusion, mainly because thos ethat lose their jobs working for a certain amount of money, refuse to take jobs considered "beneath" them for less pay.
There is work for anyone who truly wants to work...If there wasn't then how do they explain the immigration problem?

According to a few people on this BBS, our welfare system explains the immigration problem quite nicely.
