Title: The worst possible news for the Gulf Coast.. Rita
Post by: Hangtime on September 19, 2005, 10:39:16 AM
What are the chances??

This one's heading up the florida straights towards the Key's now..  storm track sez final landfall between Galveston and Pensacola.

Just about the worst possible news for the folks that have already suffered enough...

Imagine what the NOLA refugees that chose to relocate to Florida would feel.  I see either a lot of new atheists, a lot of new fervently religious, or both.

Have lived within 5 miles of the coast my entire life. Had one hurricance come ashore here in all that time.. and I enjoyed every minute of it.

I did most everything wrong.. classic. Would probably do a few small things differently if faced with another. Should be noted I don't live in a city.. and if I did I would get the hell out before one hit.

Well its looking like LA/Tx border right now. The good thing about this track is it depends on the high on tx/la staying put. If it begins eroding, we should know in plenty of time to get out (yet again). The track with Katrina was more of a timing thing with a trough digging down to pick up Katrina. The speed of the trough was grossly screwed up in the early models which accounted for that big shift 3 days before landfall. Right now, it looks like a trough will only play a part at the end of the path. So it will be a timing thing that tells if it hits Corpus Christi or Lake Charles. Unless the trough moves through VERY fast in which case Rita will plow right over New Orleans again:cry

There's a big difference betwee "one the beach" and "within 5 miles of the coast". Heck, even 2 miles from the coast. Gulfport being the primary example right now.

Beach: trashed  2 miles inland: Houses quite livable.

Prayers ain't my thing. In this case, I'm making an exception.. can't hurt, might help, and I do pray to whatever diety that does the accounting these days that this new threat passes you folks by.

Over the weekend I filled both propane bottles, checked up on supplies... 5 gallons of water, month of canned goods, batteries, flashlights, vhf radio, crank-powered emergency am/fm radio, 3 loaded mags & 2 boxes of 100 shells for the 9mm, tools, duct tape, waterproof matches, candles, checked the generator and filled up the gas cans...

Then I woke up this morning to find out a Hurricane was headed for us.

Ironic.

Bump that water level way the hell up. 5 gal a DAY, minimum. Also a water treatment system is handy as hell.. the brita gravity pitcher works great for the water that comes outta your storage cans.

Get a couple of coleman lanterns too.. propane or the old white gas units.

Got both. Normally run tequila & vodka through the brita pitchers... more than enough spare filters laying around though. I know I'll need more water, but I ran out of containers. I'll grab a bunch more on the way home. At least I've got a reason to clean out the coolers now & clean the dust off all my camping gear (and the coleman lanterns).

I've also got one of these, but I haven't used it since I took it out of the box & tested it... (http://images.rei.com/media/695265_9996Prd.JPG)

I'm not too bad off for a city boy :)

We have a high ridge over the state that will send rita over the keys and will keep her from coming further north... However, I wouldn't want to be in intended path afterwards..

But then were use to getting hurricanes..no biggie we deal with it logicaly and we don't loot..

Not entirly true, I have seen up to 30 miles inland get TRASHED. That was a particular storm UR speaking of .. You cant predict the damage cant even perdict the path so dont assume UR safe being 5 ,10 or even 20 miles inland .. Look at the size of the storm then not only spawn tornados but some are like A huge sustained tornado with 150 mph winds moving 10- 15 mph
I have been through ever hurrican to hit FL since i was a kid during andrew  Was always near the beach but was never ''dumb '' enough to sit around and wait for it to hit us ''drunk bastards in N Orleans sitting in the bar waiting for the storm''
Every time I hear about another storm im not suprised .SOS throw the Hurrican shutters on stock up on canned goods and freeze a bunch of water in my IND. freezer  and ride it out .  Most would assume 2 weks W/O power would be bad ..Yes for those  poor generatorless people .Recently invested in a BADAZZ generator ,Had to pour a 3x4x1 foot slab and bolt it down ,Build a nice wooden cover for rain/wind/weather . make a hole in the front for A PTO shaft on my Kubota tractor  back her up rev the engine up to RPM setting (not sure off the top)  flip the switch and TA-DA . Full power  central AC ,Fridge,T.V,Lights ,Stove,Washer/Dryer ,HELL even AH =) ITS WORTH IT.

down in FL after the hurricanes are down we have CANE PARTYS!!!!!

I had 5 gallons sitting around *before* I knew the storm was on the way. I know the bathtub & trashcan tricks already, but I don't fill those up until the night before the storm hits. Grew up in Florida. I'm lucky enough to have a dad who passed down the "Better to have it & not need it" mentality. We're running through our inventories via email right now. He got one up on me.. he has chainsaws. I didn't think about those :(

Latest news here in Houston is predicting landfall between Freeport and Galveston.  Wheeee.  Already hit the store on the way home tonight to stock up on some stuff.  Gonna fill the cars up with gasoline on Wednesday whether we need it or not.  Probably not gonna evacuate.  We live way out on the NW side of Houston though.

Havent decided on boarding up the windows yet.  Guess if the tracks are still holding true Wednesday or so and its coming ashore at Galveston I will board up the windows on the East side of the house....luckily no windows on the South side.  As much as I hate to see it come this way, I sure hope it stays on a southerly track so that New Orleans and Mississippi dont get too much crap from it.  I think they have been through enough as it is.

Best case scenario would be for it to run almost due West and head onshore between Corpus Christi and the Rio Grande Valley....nothing out there but the King Ranch and a bunch of cows.

Gotta feel bad for the folks who left NO and came to Houston after Katrina.....they must think God is trying to chase 'em to Arizona or something.  ;)

If there's a God and he's chasing you... might as well sit down and have a beer. You'll only die tired otherwise.  ;)

I was wondering about this the other day.. Would it really be a bad thing if NO would be hit with a storm that had significant amounts of rain?

Here's the thought.  The water that is being pumped back into the lake and levees is leaving behind some pretty toxic sentiment, don't you think?

Wouldn't the best way to ( aside from months of bulldozers and hazmet treatment ) wash this goop away .. or at least minimize it, would be a good deluge of rainwater?

This is assuming that the water handling facilities are now in place and capable of handling the load.  If not, then, no.. it would do no good.

Just a thought.

Im thinking might not be a bad thing. Could end up wiping out the levies entirely and if we're lucky the ill conceived notion behind them.

In the end mother nature ALWAYS wins.

Maybe they will then learn to work with it instead of against it.

Chainsaw for when the zombies show up. I imagine it'd be more satisfying than shooting them.

And clearing fallen trees. Hurricane Hugo took the tree out of my grandparents yard, picked it up, and speared it into their living room.

Okay so appearently my semi-diligent preparations were for nothing... Family meeting tonight to discuss our evac plan... Hotel rooms already booked in Dallas. We live near bayous that begin to flood into the neighborhoods during "normal" heavy rains, so staying is a bad idea. The good news is all we need to keep doing business is our cell phones, laptops, & a wifi hotspot so we won't lose business. Everything else is insured. I'll know for sure Thursday morning.

Well this sucks. I was supposed to get fitted for a tux on Friday and my best friend's wedding rehersal is on Monday. :furious

Hotels are booked throughout TX. Try Oklahoma or Arkansas if you're gonna get outta here. They're projecting Cat 4 by noon tommorrow, and it won't make landfall until Friday... and we're projected to be on the dirty side of the storm. We're leaving 3am Thursday morning. We've got enough to be completely self sufficient for 7 days (6 people & 6 dogs) for when we return. Hoping for the best, expecting the worst.

Good luck to ya, we're all gonna need it.

What part of Katy?  I am NW off 290 and Eldridge.  We are stocked and ready.  Not planning on leaving unless this thing gets way outta control.  Slightly concerned about the creek/bayou behind the house, but the neighbor who has lived here forever told me that they have never had a problem with flooding....even during Allison and that one was a ***** when it hit Houston a while back.

It got absolutely nuts in Algiers the last 2 days. You have three government offices policing the city and communication was bad. People who left for work couldn't get past checkpoints in Algiers to get home.  I watched a press conference yesterday, and I swear it reminded me of a military coupe. A reporter asked the Coast Guard general where the evacuees were being taken and his reply was "None of your business." :huh :rofl
