Seriously? It seems that is one of the #1 reasons I die.. I fly bomber's 90% of the time and almost everyone of these beast's had extinguishers, and even if that fiving to almsot 400mph would surley put them out..
So what's the story with this subject?
Thanks

They'll prolly get to it, in one of the patches! With all the LIL glitches they've been trying to fix, they prolly don't wanna waste effort to add it, yet!

And would surely rip off your wings. I would like to see that fixed 1st;)

Thing is, if an engine's on fire in real life, it's NOT working at full RPMs and manifold pressure. Things are burning off. Gaskets. Seals. Hoses. Fuel lines!
There's no damage until POOF in AH. So there's no reason to put out fires. You keep flying for half an hours before anything happens. AH doesn't model engine damage as of yet, and I'd suspect that once an engine was on fire and/or extinguished, it would be almost dead (gummed up from the extinguisher??) or have to be shut down. That would be cool but I don't see it happening with out current damage model *any* time soon.

They already have somewhat of a damage model for the engine (punctured radiator or oil) which causes the engine to fail. It just becomes a catastrophic failure when it catches on fire and models a fuel tank explosion when the heat gets to the fuel!

Wouldn't you rather fly around with a dead engine than fall to your death missing a wing?
Give the dudes a freakin extinguisher!

The point is, they can't have a fire extinguisher until the engine damage is remodeled. That way they can put the fire out but they lose the engine. For now, if HTC put extinguishers in bombers in 2.05 patch 2, there'd be no point in shooting bombers. The best way to kill a bomber is to set it on fire, but if the fire gets put out and the bomber has no residual damage, what's the point?
However, if the fire gets put out but the bomber loses an engine, it is more vulnerable (but won't fall apart when the fire burns out).
See what I mean? Putting it in now would make bombers super invulnerable.

Nah, you can still blast the wing off (or wing tip) without causing an explosion! (One of Fester's favorite things to do, take you apart piece by piece, with a 262).

The resone has nothing to do with the damage system or the model. It has everything to do with effect.
There are times when you get engine hits that they start loosing oil. And hence it will stop at some time later, giving you a choice.
There are times you have an engine hit that it stops imidatly do to nasty damage.
And there are times you suffer hits that put the plane on fire.
Now the choice isn't to put it out, how hard would it be to push a button and always have it go out. That isn't the purpose of fire in the game. Fire lets you have a choice of hanging with the plane for a bit,and choose land, ditch or bail out. That is it purpose.
To put in an estinguisher would simply add a key press and put you back in an engine out situation, and hence not realy ad much to the game.

Wants realistic extinguishers and dive bombing in B24s. Sir you are truly a paradox! :aok

I have to agree w HT..But why not add a random chance of fire when yer oil is hit?

i'd like to see the fire go out if the pilot chooses to shut down the engine.

What bombers are you shooting at? :huh Because I want some of those! Whenever I lose a wing I tend to crash....Oh, yeah I forgot about GRAVITY!! If the bomber loses an engine, it becomes sluggish. If it loses two on one side it is really bad! Trust me, I have lost bombers and shot bombers down by just taking out wings or tails.... The fire just adds a pretty effect and the crew can roast some hot dogs and marshmellows on the way down...:aok

HT, what about multi engined bombers? For single engine planes I can see what you mean, but if you have a 4-engine bomber (b24) and an engine catches on fire, you're a ticking time bomb. Were you able to put the fire out you'd lose the engine, but not explode, being able to limp on with 3 (or 2, or heck even 1) engines left. I think for heavy bombers it might eventually have a place.
-
HT fair call on your reasoning for not having extinguishers (though I still think it would add to imersion) But....
How about the dive option... I was in a 234 and puffy ack started a fire in one engine... I Knew it wouldn't work but I dove to over 600MPH to try and put it out... ( the film looks cool an ar234 doing 600+ with a mile long smoke trail )
My point is if you had the ability to out out fires by diving then it would add more choices... for example
Your in 24 with formation, you take a hit on the engine you can
Dive or Bail
If you dive you risk
- Loosing your drones
- Breaking wings
- Crashing into the ground
- Bringing your formation into harms way by lowering you ALT (Yep some of us fly over 25 feet in buff's ppl :p)
By having the dive option you add new choices, that need to be made under pressure. Personally I like that idea.

Most fires I see on bombers in AH are not engine fires, they are fuel tank fires and no puny fire extinquisher is going to stop those.

or the chance extinguishing the fire if you put the plane in a high speed dive.

And don't for get to unslave all the guns on the bombers. It's certain death to end up behind a formation.
Or maybe let me fly and shoot three fighters at a time. :D
On the other hand, If the bombers were at 30,000 they would be shot less, therefore burn less.

Can someone explain to me how throwing foam on an engine is gonna stop a fire? Unless someone spilled a little bit on oil on the headers (which should be modeled in oil leaks I think:aok ) All you really have is the fuel tank catching on fire, no?
Oh and what is the effectiveness of a fire extinguisher at 200MPH anyway? Next to none i'd think, however, i'm no expert.
