Post by: Toad on September 19, 2001, 11:58:00 PM
So what have they got? Anyone find anything?

Here's a couple, not real definitive:

FAS sez:
15 MiG 23
30 Su-22
60 Su-7
40 MiG-17
20 MiG-19
48 MiG-21
18 L-39

Looks like those are rather old figures though.

Well, doesn't look like much and doesn't look like the force would be extensively trained in Air-to-air. Will still have to be dealt with.

Those figrues ar extremely old, my guess is 1990. I am judging by the number of F15E's that document shows the USAF having. that document reflects numbers that go along about the time of the F4 to F15E transition.

Let's see... no real forward quarter capable weapons and limited BVR capability.

They won't stand a chance.

All but one of those planes are russian built and my guess is they've run out of spareparts few years ago.

IF they come up, which I doubt, it'd be over by lunch...will their turbans double as chutes?

This is exactly the type of war Afghan is not going to give to the allies.

Not to mention that war is not against Afghanistan. The best military action against Afghanistan is already taken, when all Western human & economic contribution has been cut.

Cheers,

Pepe

Given the age of those airframes, the conditions under which the current heads of Afganistan obtained them and their LOVE of technology, I doubt that many if ANY are still operating. You also don't learn to fly them in some taliban religous school.

Well, Pepe, my thoughts were generally along the lines of the kind of war we may have to give them.

I know it'll start with an extensive air assault.

I was wondering if they could do anything to prevent it. It appears their air-to-air capability is essentially non-existent.

I know they've got loads of shoulder launched anti-air but those are easily defeated simply by altitude, given the bombing capability we have.

Anyone know if they have any truly capable anti-air missile systems?

Signs are that they have only a few mid-70's era SAM fixed positions that they inherited from the USSR bases left there. Janes felt they had little or no knowledge on their use. All aircraft are either unservicable or have no trained pilots. All trained pilots left long ago as the USSR trained absolutly no Islamic pilots.

Safe to say all they really have is Zsu AAA guns, maybe some radar aiming equipment. Also quite a few Stinger's left over from the CIA too.
