Many (probably most) G6 had the clear head armor even when mounting the old heavy frame canopy.
-
Yup, Galland panzer was used already before Erla canopy came.
This would nicely further differentiate G6 from G2.
-
I've been drinking...doctors order.......
......
whats a galland panzer?
You chatting bout the amored headrest? and the armored glass when you say "clear"?
-
"galland armor".. yes a better translation I guess.
The same thing. The transparent armor glass behind pilot's neck.
-
Yes, please make the head armor clear 'armored' glass similiar to the La-7 (not really but same idea).
Does any one have specs? Thickness etc? How about a good picture as well?
-
I suppose it is the same they already have in G10 :)

Probaby not accurate to say most G6s had it, but clearly some did.
The photo that kept showing up in my stuff was of that group of 7/JG27 109G6s in flight in January 44. The B&W photo doesn't show much detail but it's clearly there on the lead bird but doesn't appear to be on the next closest 109G6 in the flight. This artwork from the Squadron Signals 109 in action part 2 is based on that 7/JG27 bird and shows the clear armor glass in place.
Edited to add a drawing of the armor glass set up with the framed canopy

Two images of the same type of armor glass on the Galland hood.

Exactly, just as 'some' Spits had 4 20mm Cannons so when we get those Spits, you can have those G6s with the uber glass. ;)
-
Sure when those 4 cannons will get a historic unrealibility factor i.e. shoot high-g and jam guns.
I'm all for it.
-
Guppy, nice pictures.
But you just repeated the common mistake... not Galland hood, but Erla hood. Galland gave his name to the Galland armor, not to the Erla hood ;)
-
Didn't the Spitfire Vc have the 4x 20mm cannons? IIRC, most had 2 cannons removed not because of unreliability with the cannons but rather for performance sake. Unlike the Vb, the Vc had the universal wing that was able to take 4x 20mms quite well.
ack-ack
-
How effective was the armor glass?
ack-ack

Yeah well, I'm a Spit/P38 Junkie, ya gotta expect a mistake on the 109s now and then :)

Spit Vc could carry 4 cannon. In practice it didn't as the weight penalty was too great on performance and they figured if you couldn't hit it with 2 cannon , you weren't gonna hit it with 4.
The only place I've seen Spits V using 4 cannons was as a ground attack bird in Italy with 2 SAAF Squadron. They also still had the large tropical filter under the nose too so they would have been not the best performing Spit V. That being said, since they were lugging bombs and hitting ground targets, not dogfighting, it made sense.
But that's one squadron out of many to use the 4 cannons. It was not a common occurance at all and as much of a Spit fan as I am, I'd not want to see it in AH. There are other Spits I'd rather see first....Spit XIIs for example. More of them in combat then 2 cannon Spit Vs :)
-
AKAK, will try to find sources about effective it was. I am guessing it was as effective as the normal armor that existed on some/most (?) planes though. The difference would be that the armored glass had a much greater thickness. So what it really comes down too is, which of the two solutions weighted most?

As well as all aircrafts engine problems, gun problems, etc.... then fine by me.

And you're a brain surgeon I'm sure. Lighten up Francis, was just making a funny. You Finns got no sense of humor or what?
Slide over to Sweden and get some. Might improve your attitude. ;)
-
You mean the "vi ska sjunga och hoppa och ha lite rolight" type of humour we sometimes see in the TV? :p
ps. Do you know why the swedes don't eat spaghetti? ..... they don't have plates long enough ;)
-
And do you know what Finnish midsummer soup is?
It's Vodka served on a plate decorated with flowers.
-
Shows how little you know Wilbuz. We do add a slice of sausage on the side for some flavour. :)
-
OH! Didn't know that since you guys have never given me any!

My purpose wasn't to offend you or anything. It just the line of thought which sometimes seems to be very popular: "I want all the possible power-ups I can get in this video game so that I can win easier"...that bothers me. I really don't know do you think like that or not but that's how it sounded like.
Consider that the current G-6 canopy (Erla Haube) gives a better view than the one that I or anyone else here was asking... ;)
It would be so cool to have G-2 with normal heavy frame canopy then a G-6 with heavy frames/Galland panzer and G-14/G-10 with Erla Haube. Would give us nice progression which happened historically during the war! :)
Anyway, on to more important things... :D
Compare this...

Another thing about finns:
You raid a finn's vodka arsenal. He pads you in the back and offers from his own cup some more..
You raid a finn's refrigerator. You die.
:D
If you ever happen to wander off to south-east finland I promise to offer a few grilled sausages as vodka chasers. :aok

whoopee.. Hadn't read this before I invited you to the next Finn-AH-Spring-Con, Wilbusz. Oh well. ;)
Back to the subject at hand.. Could we have the glass armor in the G-6 ("Galland")..?
edit: I've got some photos of the Finnish Air Force G-6 MT-507, if you need further evidence - of a single plane. (See my avatarrdd, you can clearly see the glass armor . .. ;))
