Just got back from Peru this morning on a business trip. Had the opportunity to sample Cuy Chactado. It's actually quite tasty. I didn't have my camera with me at the time so I am posting some links from other sites of what it looked like. It's what we call a guinea pig and they are from the Andes mountains.

The beer on the right, Cusquena is very good and that bowl on the left is the original home made cornnuts.

I sampled cuy in Arequipa, Peru. It's a very nice colonial city in Southern Peru. Think I'll make a run to the pet store this weekend.

Nope a Guinea Pig. I had it one more time as well during my stay. It was a little like somewhere between a rabbit and squirrel in flavor and texture.
Do a search on Cuy.

EDIT:
Is it stuffed with something? How are the ribs? ;)

The ribs and the back strap (tenderloin section) were my favorite parts. Meat pulled right off the bone. Legs were tasty as well. More meat on the hind legs. It's fileted out and the intestines removed. I didn't get the chance to watch but could figure it out. I believe they may also use a marinade, but it was definitely nicely seasoned.
There is a version where they do stuff them.
Mine was not stuffed but they do leave like the liver and heart attached on the underside. I didn't try those on the first one but my cohorts convinced me on the second and it was not bad, but I preferred the meat portion. Probably behind the neck and lower back was best. The skin was nice and crispy and quite favorful.
This was in a nice restaurant called Tradicion Arequipena.

I suppose I could eat hamster but not just "a" hamster. One would need about 4 to 6 hamsters for a meal. However it sounds about as much fun as eating hickory nuts unless you were really hungry or trying to survive. Too much work involved for the quanity of meat per hamster.

lol Rog, you rule man!
-
Ethnocentric I may be... but the chances of me eating that are slim. When in Rome, do as the go to burger king instead.
-
That looks remarakably similar to the KFC snack box I had recently.
-
ewwww gross... thats looks sooo nasty, I can't believe you would put that anywhere close to your mouth lol. You said it tastes like a cross between a rabbit and a squirell, I have never tried either lo Don't think I'll ever care too... Thats just nasty bro, if you look at the guinea pig on the plate it kinda looks like it is looking at you lol... I can see it now, your going to pets mart today and buying a huge cage and about 20 guinea pigs to raise and fatten up... I can't believe you ate rat man... just nasty LOL J/K
-
LOL. That would be a real hit at some elementary school show and tell :)

I recently started preparing for my anual hike through the mtns,I generally get ready a month early,we do a survival hike,no food,no water, just ourselves and a knife,a few pieces of fishing line and a hook.Anyway we have a new member this year who is from Laos, born of the Hmong people and as we discussed the trip,I asked him if he had ever done any survivalist trips? He's says to "Jeff,I'm an Asian,we eat everything"Anyway long story short we went to his house last weekend and I had dog meat for the first time in my life.It really isnt as bad as what I'd always thought.I guess it's just the way we're brought up.

And instead of salt and pepper they sprinkle something on there food, i swear its fish food that there sprinkling on there food. Its soooo gross, all my other shop guys eat outside when they are eating because it makes em sick lol no joke

I just ate the meat portion and on the second one several days later I also consumed the heart and a generous portion of liver.
And yes in Peru, Guinea Pigs or Cuy, particularly in smaller cities and rural areas are kept, raised, and bred in cages out in the back yard just like rabbits for food. They are really more of an Andian regional food and not commonly available throughout all of Peru.
They are revered as somewhat of a local delicacy.

the top pic looks a little vile, but only cause of the pile of what likes like puke next to the little pig
The rest looks ok. I would try it.
I love dogs but would still eat one.
Well as long as I didnt know it personaly.

Better than chicken :aok
True free ranged chicken is pretty good.
On another note it's a hoot to see folks respond by saying "I would never eat such a thing". You would likely be surprised at what you might be capable of consuming, and enjoying, given a true hunger, survival situation.

...or large amounts of alcohol consumption.
Fortunately, I've never been drunk enough to eat one of these:

Sandman, don't be hijacking my thread with duckling on the halfshell that you didn't try. Can't say as I blame you!
:D

That looks cool. Always wanted to try that rogwar. Just about anything is edible if cooked good.
-
Lol the top one thought he was superman or something. Or he was a limp wristed commie.
-
Meat should be prepared while the animal is still alive. Something to do with the adrenaline the animal is producing while its being skinned alive makes the meat tastier.

My wife is cambodian, you get used to it after a while. Ask them for some bohock (no idea how you spell it), its their equivilant to cheese... cept its a made from fish. Cheese made from fish... imagine it ;) - the nastiest thing you'd ever smelled in your life.
The pickeled duck eggs aren't smelly, they just make me naucious.
Durian is the other thing, although you get used to that very fast.
JB12 you should be honoured, dog is actually a delicacy. ie its not a last resort meat like we think it might be. When you go to Asia you are almost guaranteed to never eat dog simply because you pay more than beef/chicke/pork for it.
The funny thing is they are probably right about the hamburger being nasty.
