Im looking into getting an mp3 player.
A few things I want in it would be FM tuner (preferably digital) and presets would be nice.
Size, smaller the better, but not so small its a pita to use.
100-200 dollar range. As it will probably end up getting tossed around, or lost/stolen god knows what.
One i was looking at was
http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/SanDisk-1GB-MP3-Player-SDMX11024A18-/sem/rpsm/oid/108444/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do
I have no experience with SanDisk tho, do any of you?
Something like that one would be great. Its cheap, and it looks like it would be handy to carry around. Not like some of the larger ones I have found.
Any ideas would be cool.
Thanks

That looks pretty damned good. I'd go in and physically check them myself, some of the flash based MP3 players are pretty plasticy and feel like they'd fall apart quickly.
And don't be fooled by the ipod shuffles. They use the same chipset as everyone else (the company Creative Labs owns majority shares of), except they disable all the cool features (fm tuner, lcd display, wmv playback etc).

battery sized mp3/FM radio :D
looks great but if you want status and more space, get an ipod nano :)
-
I went ahead and ordered the iPod nano. I'll let ya know how I like it, but by the time I get it, you'll probably have yours already.
-
yeah, it was too late to take a run to circut cit, i'm going to head over there first thing in the morning to look at them. But knowing how they hold up is though to tell by just looking at them. They can look tough and last a week, or look cheap and last forever. Was hoping that someone maybe had one of the Sandisks or something from them like it... could tell me how it holds up.

I bought an ipod nano, it's extremely cool. But this device has a lot going for it too, I think I wpuld rather have it than an ipod shuffle.
-
I have a Creative Zen Micro. It is about $175 at Walmart and it holds 5GB of songs, has a FM tuner, organzer, microphone, removeable disc, calender, and date and time.

I wasn't really impressed with the iPod Shuffle at all. I need to have a display.

I have the 512 shuffle.
I only use it for short evning walks when the missus isnt joining me or when i take my bike out to loose some ounces tho. I put in my powerbook and let itunes pick the tunes for me and im good to go. If i need it for longer trips on the train or something or didnt have access to my PB i would have chosen a player with more capacity and a display.

Nilsen when are you getting your nano?
-
Im not getting one.
Am I supposed to?
-
Of course. :)
-
I know Jobs agrees with you! :D
Nah, I dont really have the need now. Next on my gadget list is a Nokia 6680 or N70, and they have mp3 support. :)
-
LOL yes he does, Apple Corp world hedaquarters is about 300 meters from my house so I must be under the influence.
-
If or when they release a videopod ill place an order if the price is right.
-
As for pricing It's scary how easily and without thought I spent $250 when I saw the nano.
-
Yup.. they know how to make you drool.
I think they sprinkle a thin layer of crack on their products so you just _have_ to keep buying.
-
I still recomend the Zen. U can get a Micro (4,5,& 6GB0), a Zen (20GB), a Neon (20GB). they all have displays.

I ended up getting the Zen Nano Plus. I liked that it was small and had a digital FM tuner, with presets. It only has 512 mb but the radio takes up where the storage lacks. I can still fit 8 hours of music on it. And when it gets lost, busted or stolen I wont be out 2-300 bucks.
I also found that winamp now suports transfers for all portable devices which makes it really easy add or delete songs from the mp3 player. The program creative gives kept on crashing, so i did some looking around and ran across the plug in for winamp.

Good choice, looks like the Nano has "issues": http://news.com.com/Problems+surfacing+with+iPod+Nano+screen/2100-1041_3-5880307.html?tag=nefd.top
No doubt Apple will blame it on their Taiwanese manufacturer

You really dont like apple do you vulcan :lol
-
OMFG I just got an IPod e mail (yahoo messenger alerts). Anyway, Apple can go suck a lime, Creative Labs is the way to go.
I strongly advise against anything Apple. This strong dislike comes from using school computers I think. Cheap bastages.

You advice against anything from Apple because of your school computers?

Not really. Ipods annoy me. They're the same taiwanese chipset as everyone elses just with half the features missing for a higher price, yet people think they're the best mp3 players out there. Theres this aura that ipods are something original, something uber, they're not. So I like people to be aware of these issues.
Just like Mac owners and their stupid "we don't get virus's or trojans" crap... and before you say "they don't", read up on the holes apples been patching recently and read this:

Plus I had some tard apple tech on our network. When I pointed to the smtp commands coming out at port 80 to Google, Ozemail, Red Sherrif, and Double Click sites, followed by a DoS burst, the Apple guys just shrugged their shoulders and said they didn't know thus didn't care.
Apple annoys me because they lie more than microsoft, and thats quite an accomplishment.

Just don't buy em then.

Ahh yes, far better to shut up then have the truth be known. Your sounding like a true apple owner now ;)

lol :D
All I know is the bottom line..
I'm happy with it, and apart from runnig some maintnance scripts once a week it stays fast and clean. My XP lappy needs constant updates and an annual reinstall to stay fast and fresh.
Apple evangelists or "sceptics" really don't bother me as I don't trust either of them. ;)
