Title: And she's gone
Post by: Tarmac on September 24, 2005, 11:58:50 AM
My baby, that is.  01 Jeep Cherokee.  Last year they made them.  I wanted one since before I could drive, and finally got her this summer -- low miles, great condition, perfect color.  It's stupid that I loved that car this much, especially with all the loss in the world and the Gulf right now.  I washed, vacuumed, and Armor-All'd it yesterday,  as I thought about how I'd never sell her, how I'd keep her until she was a collector's item and drive her down Woodward in perfect condition when I was 60 years old.  Everytime I walked up to that car with no one in earshot, I'd say "hey, beautiful" and just run my hand down those sharp edges on the body.

Went to a Tiger's game, came out to find some broken glass and an empty parking spot.  And as a cop, I know what will happen... they'll find it on the side of the road someday, stripped.  Nobody will look for it, they'll just notice it someday.  Being Detroit, who knows when that'll happen.  Every car in that damned city looks abandoned.

My best hope right now is that they'll find it soon, sans stereo and airbags, but otherwise in good condition.  I feel like a moron praying for a car, but this helplessness is killing me.  All I can do is pray for some peace, and the wisdom to put it in perspective and say "it's only a piece of metal."  Holy crap it's hard though.  It's eating me up from the inside out, knowing that some piece of **** is probably laughing next to my car as he smokes weed with his buddies and gets ready to pull the next airbag out.

Sorry to hear that Tarmac, sister had her Geo Tracker broken into few weeks ago at a park-n-ride, salamanders took her stereo.  Right now RTD is reviewing the tapes (which is more then the local police would do so kudos to them).  My dad also had his truck broken into repeatedly, he now has an extremely loud alarm and a gun ready to bust someone that sets it off.  Oh yeah house was broken into a few years ago, twice.

So instead of pouring fuel on a fire i'm not going to go into our local police handling these cases......

Sorry to hear that bud, hopefully they'll find it.

That sucks Tarmac.  The only time I've been to Detroit was to see the Jays play in Tiger stadium.  If my car had been stolen I'd have been in big trouble, those were college days and I barley had enough for gas to get there and back.

How did you get home?

Sorry Tarmac. But now you can go on a quest and find a cherry 70's model Cherokee. Those were the best version, IMHO. Had a '77 Grand Cherokee with quadratrac. There was no hill I could not climb or stuck vehicle I could not pull free.

I hear you on that one, they busted out the rear side window on my sisters Tracker (hard top) then went through and busted up the face plate, cut wires, ripped some stuff away, all for a $500 bust on the black market.  I'd like to take a baseball bat to them.

There should be a law that allows police to brutalize criminals who have committed a type of crime that the police have been a victim of.

I can identify, Tarmac.  As non-helpful as it may be to you now, it will make you a better cop to know what it feels like to be a victim.

The fact is, it hurts.  It goes against everything American.

Oh, and don't go looking for the thief yourself.  It won't be good.

Yeah, I know it Gunthr.  I'm trying to find the bright side in this, and that's really all I'm coming up with.  :)

Curval, we got home by cramming 9 people into my buddy's Tahoe.  The four he had at the game, plus the five I had crammed into my Jeep to get there.  They were nice enough to sit outside the police station for an hour while I filled out the report.

The Detroit cops did find my car, parked about five blocks north of where it had been taken.  I talked to them on the phone Saturday night.  Dash all messed up (hopefully just airbags missing), ignition punched, stereo gone, window broken, and accident damage to the front right.  The accident damage is the only thing I'm really worried about, as I hope it's minor enough that I can drive the car to a body shop or wherever my insurance company wants me to.

Anyhow, I'll talk to the claims people from my insurance company tomorrow morning, and then go to the impound yard to see just how bad it is.

That's the main thing they're after.  I've heard black market prices anywhere from 400 to 900 dollars for one.

Obviously, there's a pretty big demand for them, as they're often the first thing "damaged" in a minor accident.  So if you're ever replacing the ones in your car, insist that they be new factory airbags or you're supporting this kind of bull****.  The shop will tell you they got them from a junkyard, but they're full of ****.  They're stolen.

Sorry to hear that tarmac.  Glad you got it back.

Did you have any extra security in the car?  the club etc.?

I use the brake lock bar thingie and.... an ignition cut off switch.

I leave the doors unlocked and there is no visible radio.

I had a 59 vette once with the cut off switch on the electric fuel pump... came out and my car was gone... it was half a block away with an allmost dead battery... the theives hot wired it and then drove till the fuel ran out in the float bowls... they cranked on it for a while and then just gave up (bieng in the middle of the street and all).

Nothing is sure fire..  they can have a tow truck but.. with those security devices you are better off...

There is an anti theft device that covers the whole steering wheel so that airbag theives pass you by.

Someday... tracking dvices will be small and cheap and you can get em and hide em on your car.   GPS will track em down and you can bust any ring or person with your car no matter how stripped... that will be the end of car theft..

Just as an update, I went to the body shop yesterday to see my Jeep.  Looks like they were just some joyriding bastards.  The body damage to the front right isn't too bad.  The radio is gone, but airbags are still there.  Of course the ignition is punched.

Somehow, the bastards managed to break the rear driveshaft.  The U-joint by the rear differential popped.  God knows what they were doing to do that.  That's my biggest worry now -- that they were doing something so retarded that they damaged something in the drivetrain -- especially the trans or transfer case.

Besides that, the biggest thing that pisses me off is what they did to the interior.  Of course they took all my stuff like cell phone/ipod chargers, but they also found my first aid kit and fire extinguisher -- both of which they proceeded to spew all over the interior.  Dry powder fire extinguishers make a big mess inside a car.  Hopefully the detailing guys can do a good job.

Being a youngun, I don't know much about these things.  Will insurance be covering all of this?

Fortunately, yes.  My comprehensive deductible is only $500, so it won't be too big a hit.

Of course, as far as all the loose stuff in the car goes (cd's, chargers, ipod accessories, first aid kit, fire extinguisher, jumper cables and other car necessities), I'm boned.  That's all on my head.

Tarmac, that sucks man, good to hear you got it back though...Strange coincidence, same thing happened to one of our families vehicles, and in the same city...The most hysterical thing about the whole ordeal was, while these idiot cops were supposedly out looking for our car, the theives had used it for a joyride for the night then parked it in front of the Detroit Police Department ...They called us two weeks later to inform us our car was being towed for all the unpaid parking tickets...:aok

Gotta Love Detroit :D

It was a GM 401. I really hated getting rid of it. I made a small fortune on Mustang and Padre Islands pulling stuck cars outa the beach with it.

Check your homeowners policy. Some of those cover household goods stolen out of your car. You have to clear that deductible too though.

Good luck!

Yeah and the best part is Kwame laying off all those cops and firefighters. It's nice to know that he has like a dozen bodyguards but the taxpayer that pay his salary can't get decent protection!:furious
