I have come to the conclusion that my ol Nvidia card is in need of replacement. I don't need "THE" fastest cards on the market just one that will give me a FPS higher than 8 on full zoom in a panzy.
I've tweaked setings, resolutions, pre-loads and still get jumpy FPS performance. If I set it so my FPS is good....everything is a green blur and I can't see a tank in the trees until I am 100Yards away.
I would like to get a nice card for "around" $200.
Suggestions are welcome.
my current xetup:
AMD Athlon XP 3000+ 2.17GHz MMX, 3DNow Processor
1GB Ram
GeForce4 MX 4000 AGP 128MB (Driver 6.14.0010.7777 )
DirectX 9.0c
Thanks

looking at pricewatch ive seen a X800XL for "around " 200 . it is a great card for that price . If your a die hard Nvidia person , the 6800GT is about the same price , and they perform relatively the same , Doom is better on nvidia cards , and half life2 is better on ATI . if i remember correctly . If AH is the only game you play , its a toss up , Ive been using Ati for along time , so iwould suggest the X800XL .

I wouldn't go for anything slower/older than a 6600GT or x800. Even those are a full generation behind. ATI 9xxx cards are 2 complete generations behind and lack the hardware some new games require for their advanced graphics features.
I'd also recommend 256 meg memory so you have a hope of running 512 textures without tons of stutters.
Shop sales, look for stuff like this:

Or this (6800 with 128 meg memory and $20 rebate):

Or this (6600GT with 256 meg memory):

Newegg doesn't seem to have any AGP 6800s with 256 meg memory but they should cost right around $200. The 6800GTs are still over $270 so that's probably out of your range, but a 6800GT would probably be "the last AGP video card you ever buy" since there's nowhere to go from there except to a new 7800 or better, and those are only pci-express.
