Title: rpsnort, beemer fans..
Post by: hblair on September 26, 2005, 03:17:54 PM
I've been known to think with things other than my brain. This time its over a car.
Well, the story starts way back in the summer of '93 when hb was a lil pup of 24 years. We had a car towed into the shop that year that bumped in the right rear. This car impressed the heck outa me. It was a '90 bmw 750iL. She was black leather inside, black outside (no clearcoat lol:)) This car had all the bells and whistles. Power everything, cruise of course. factory cell phone. Factory alpine stereo w/ tape deck. 6 CD changer in the trunk. It came with abs and traction control (not real common in those days) and an auto leveling system. This car had power and heated front seats and headrests! And, get this, power and heated rear seats with power headrests.

And talk about beautiful. We had to practically mop the slobber off the shop floor around this car. But the coolest thing about this car was the V12. Yep, 296 horsepower V12 bmw engine! I would just pop the hood stare at that work of art.

Do you get the idea that I fell in love with this car?

Well, acouple months ago I'm over at the tire store here in town that we do business with. My friend James says something to the effect of "Do you know anybody who'd like to buy my old BMW? hmmm I think to myself. Could it be? no surely not. I go look at the car. It's the same one. She's not new anymore. The body style isn't cutting edge any more, but kinda classy looking. The paint has oxidized a little although she's been garage kept. I take her for a drive. Something I didn't do 12 years ago. I get on the local interstate. Great day in the morning. Smoothest broadest powerband I've ever felt. It'll gently plant you in the seat when you kick it from 90 miles per hour!

Well I knew I was gonna buy the car then. I just had to convince my wife. Which turned out pretty easy.

If you're a bmw enthusiast you know the old 750iL's are expensive to own. The V12's have two of everything. maf sensors, fuel pumps, etc. It's like having two 6 inlines. It gets horrible gas mileage around town of course, although it can push 20mpg on the highway. I hear it weighs like 4200lbs. hehe

But you see I just don't care. I'm gonna own the car I fell in love with 12 years ago. I know it doesn't make sense, but everything doesn't have to.

Please don't tell me how stupid I am for buying it.

Here's what she look like..

Original paint on all but the quarters and roof..

V12 with 296 bhp..

I just can't help but like the lines of this car..

rip, I'm a legitamite beemer man. Just like you and classy man!:aok

Congrats!

Not a car enthusiast myself, but thats car is great! A modern classic :)

You just have to maintain it, and keep it in mint condition.

I had nice videos of how smoothly does that V-12 run: first guy put a coin standing next to the BMW logo between cyl-heads while engine was running... coin didn't fell on its side. Next he gave it some rpm and coin just kept standing... oh and he also started the engine with coin standing.

Few years ago I was also thinking about buying a 750iL but the price of taking care of it scared me away.

Congrats. I wish that you may never experience the harassment I experienced on this BBS (Mostly FDB's) when I bought a bimmer.

Incidently, the wife loves those older style 7 series. I thought for SURE she wanted one this year (we'd planned 2005 for another auto for her) but she came home one day and had her mind set on a 05' Mustang convertible. :cry  Oh well....

It was nothing compared to the crap you got for carpeting your garage. :)

That I expected. (And FWIW, 3 other neighbors in a 60-home platte have done the same after seeing mine! ;) ) Now I have a real garage(detached) for changing oil, I needed to carpet the attached garage to prevent me from temptation of oil changes. Nothing worse than walking into someones garage and tell tale signs of "spills" all over the floor. :D

yeah, nothing is more insulting than a garage that looks like a garage...

Before I even saw the pic, I knew it had to be black.  Great car...I had some laughs in one back years ago.  No one expects a car that big to be as fast as it is.  A buddy of mine had a 750iL and a MB 300 SEL 6.3 (for many years the fastest sedan in the world).  He lived in a redneck Florida town and used to harass Z28s and 5.0 Mustangs with those two sedans.  LOL...good times.

I suppose its based on where your garage is located (my is directly beneath 2 of the bedrooms the kids use) and for what purpose you have for your garage. Personally, mine is not for collecting so much junk that I can't park a car in it. It is another living area of the house, with gym equipment, an area for the kids to play in during the rain season, and a place to have a cold beer out of the garage fridge when a friends stops by for a short visit to detail cars.

I love these types of garage:

HBlair.......

You are going to luv it!!
I own a 92 750IL and talk about a smooth ride with the bells and whistles......
A beautiful cruiser, just sucky gas mileage, but not bad for 12 cyl's.  All in all, it's been a pleasure to own, except for having a 21 year old who thinks it's his ;)

Enjoy it  :aok

I plan to rip the carpet up and do my 3-car attached garage like the 3rd pic down one day, but for now, the kids use the garage area quite a bit in the winter, so indoor/outdoor carpet is sufficient for now.

Ahh.

That looks like metal with anti-skid pattern. If you do it like that you could get an electric carpet roller thingy that rolls out the carpet for the kids to play on. Really easy, ill see if i can find pics of one that i saw a while back.

Man I love Beemers. Growing up in Birmingham, Alabama in the 50's and 60's you didn't see anything exotic. For me it started when, as a kid of 10 y.o., I fell in love with a BMW motorcycle one of the older kids on my block had just bought. 1962, all black (as they all were back then). Just something about those twin horizontal jugs that made 'em different from the Hondas, Triumphs, BSAs, 2-stroke Yammerhaws, S'ukis and Harleys everone else was ridin'. And the sound.....classy.

From them I took notice of their cars.

Well thanks guys.  I might hang out at the beemer board some rip (spell it right ;))
I've learned a little more about the engine. From what I understand, the only thing each bank of cylinder shares is a crankshaft and the same motor oil. making an electrical breakdown impossible. The car is supposed to go into "limp mode" to get you home. Even two alternators heh. Troubleshooting a prob might be costly.

I know your kidding about that last part of the sentence, but for you kiddies out there....

Bimmer: Automobile made by BMW
Beemer: Motorcycle made by BMW

Don't ask, just use the proper terminology. :D

neither is ours, whats stopping a car from being parked in it is the bits from a different car filling it up.

That may not be the way you are in real life.  I got along with you fine at the con when I met you and most of the time online.  The problem is that you come across exactly like that through the forums.  That is why people give you the crap they do.

When someone posts that they are happy that people are flying flags after 9/11, you post that you had been doing it for years before.  You post numerous times about you being followed and spied on in Aces High because people were out to "get you" in the game.  Posting that stuff (and tons of other posts that are similar to them) makes you come across as a narcissistic paranoid.

Again, I don't think you are an idiot or anything more than someone who is proud of his life, family, and possessions.  I don't think there is anyhting wrong with that.  However, I can see where that combined with the way you post can drive people crazy or provide them fuel to tweak your nipples.  My squaddies, god bless them, love to tweak people's nipples.  Sometimes they are hilarious, other times they aren't.

Nice garage Rip.

Got a proposition for ya.

Adopt me.

I got a lot to offer in return.  As your adopted son and personal valet/butler, I will...

Wash, wax, and service your cars on a weekly basis...clean and oil your guns, including the bores, and test-fire the rifles periodically to make certain the scopes are sighted to point of aim at 200 yards...carry out routine maintenance on your boats, home and/or outbuildings, including any vacation home you may have...be responsible for performing guard duty of wife and children in the even that you have to be away on business for an extended period...accompany you on your fall forays into the wilds to help you skin, cape, and butcher your trophies, and prepare your meals at the end of the day.

As you can see, I have a lot to offer.

However, I don't wash underwear.

So let me get this straight...you come back to this BBS where you've been absent for quite some time, just to tell me that I get a ration of crap because I posted that I flew a flag in my front yard before 9/11 (which is a fact)?  You say you don't *like* my style of posting? So you justify it by backing up a bunch of FDB's, most of who have either been banned from this BBS at one time or another, and then tell me that that type of behavior , "tweaking nipples" is acceptable? You obviously have some growing up to do young man.  And as far as our Con meet, I think we spoke for what...5 minutes?

Please let me know if posting about new toys on this BBS is a big no no in your book.

Also, please link any posts where I thought people were "out to get me". I may have posted that a few of our big raids were spoiled due to spies (which you cannot deny happened in AH). But I really don't recall posting in the fashion you claim.

I highly recommend you go back to the FDB forums. It is evident in your first reply of this thread that you fit in well over there with your peers.

And FWIW, I'm done with you and this thread. You're officially  the second person to make my ignore list. Creamo was the first. Misery loves company.

LOL, I'm sorry, but that lecture is just too funny.

"You obviously have some growing up to do young man."  Priceless.

On the subject of the thread, I hated the look of those beamers when they were new, but I was in high school so what he hell did I know?  Since then, they've kinda grown on me as about the only beamers that I like the look of.  I dunno what it is...maybe 'cause they're a little more square, but not old-style boxy.  Congrats on getting your dream car, Hblair, it was fun to read your post about it...it's easy to tell how empassioned you are with it.  So, have you already planned out a "just because" road trip? ;)

Plus it's always nice to now whats going on in your control modules(fault codes and such).
Electonics in BMW are always were and will be more comlex than in any other manufacturer. If you have a problem dont go to "Rodriges auto repair" type shops.Make sure that your tech knows what hes doing

I haven't been banned, this board just bores me most of the time. I lurk and read, but see no reason to post. Don't paint the FDBs with too wide of a brush there Rip. I've met you, gone to the 262 project with you, and had a good time. You're a good guy. Sometimes you come across a bit pretentious on the intardnet, but that's the limitations of the written language. That's just my 2 cents.

The FDBs are WYSIWYG. We're the same in person as we are on the web.... and that's what's beautiful about it. No fake personas or macho intardnet characters. Just guys who like to have a good time, share a good laugh, and act immature in a Amurrican way. :)

Now back to topic...

I had a 323i back in the late 80s-early 90's that I loved hblair. Bought it in Germany for $600. It was an awesome piece of machinery. Out of all the cars I've owned, it's one of the few that I still wish I had. Enjoy it!

High Maintenance? I've got nearly 90,000 on mine, never done nothing but oil changes and tires to it. Original brakes are still going good.
Yuppie ride? I own a F250 4x4 with a gun rack in it too. :)

I can't believe I said this about my sweetheart. I'm sorry sweetheart.

About 6 weeks ago I was at a family get together, and the guy I sold the car to was there. The ol black beauty was having major engine probs. Seems it had started smokin somethin awful and no power. I felt a kick in the gut when I heard this. One guy there was offering to buy it and put a "350 chevy" in it. Made me sick. I told him to let me know before he sold it.

He called 2 weeks later, it was down at the mechanics shop, I offered him two grand. And hooked up the trailer to go get her. When I saw her sitting there I felt sorry for her. I got close to the car and saw she had picked up some dings since I last saw her.:cry I loaded it up and took it home. Turned out there was nothing wrong with the engine, just a bad pcv valve lol.:aok

I drove it a few weeks and decided to paint the whole car. Went for the blackout look. Rip, this time with a clearcoat.;) Here's a few pics...

I admit it, I am obsessed with this car. If I sell it again, I'll have to put her on ebay, so I won't ever know there whereabouts of it again lol. Of course I could hire a private investigator lol:rofl

Looks awesome Blair! Surprised you didn't go with Imola Red. ;)

:aok

FYI, I sold my bimmer. Still regret it, but family was growing and so is my business so I really had no choice since we've not the budget for 4 vehicles, so the 330ci went bye bye to  a nice looking 30-something gal in Seattle.

Well, he bought about a 2000 model 7 series. He didn't really care when i told him what was wrong. Mechanic was thinking something was internally wrong with the engine.

Rip, I can't believe you sold your BMW. Quitters never win. :p

Beemers are a piece of Chit.  Barvarian Motor Waste

I owned one in Germany... Buy 2 of them, you'll need the parts.

The car is tempermental, unreliable, couldn't haul arse with both hands.

Frikken looks good in a garage, parking lot or along side of the road.  Sold mine for $1500 just to have some star~eyed~glazed kid to take it off my hands. Then his Dad wanted to kick my arse... It was possessed, not repossessed, spiritually possessed... First time I ever had to scrap the frost from INSIDE the car windows in Winter.  Had more dammm blankets inside that car than the Cottage of Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs.... and the Heater only worked in the Summertime.  I'd drive to Frankfurt and it would be sweet... coming back South towards Nurnberg it would suck fuel *Insert Evil Laffter... "How many Ration Fuel Coupons do you have in yer Wallet?"

The only thing I removed from the Beemer was the stereo, got a bad shock in doing that too... Demon Seed.

I bought a Mecedes and enjoyed Germany... I loved that car and it loved me.  Never a problem... nice wipers on the headlights, kept me warm and toasty in the harsh German Winters... nice and cool in the Summers. That car had Class. Had to stop buying the Mecedes Emblems for the hood, both the car and the local young Merkins stationed there...lost 3.

Sooo those that want to own a "Named" car go with Mercedes and forget Beemers.

:D

Mac

Just my 0.02 cents.

Bah. you just regret selling the car! You were in love and you're in denial. ;)
Kiddin aside, I can sympathize with you. Constantly working on a car is no fun, unless of course you like working on the car. :)

Mine hasn't given me any real problems. I've heard the all horror stoies most of which have to do with electrical issues. But I don't keer. I aint skeerd.  I'll do my own mechanikin' if need be.
