Title: Day Of Defeat: Source
Post by: Ack-Ack on September 26, 2005, 11:17:00 PM
woot!  It's finally out although with only 4 maps at release.

Day of Defeat: Source (http://www.dayofdefeat.com)

It's like $15-$20 bucks if you don't have HL2: Silver or Gold editions.

Lemme get this straight... It's $20 "standalone" in working condition?

I don't have any of the HL games at all... not a big FPS type but at least there's action in those compared to what AH has become.

So $20 will buy it and I can play?

It needs HL2 to work, it's an addon.

That's what I figured. So it's really more like $60.

And it'll get major hackage, just like the free AA.

Oh well.

Oh you gotta buy HL2 as well?

never liked that games main character.

I think this is causing the confusion: "if you don't have HL2: Silver or Gold editions"

Silver and Gold editions includes the rights to download DoD free of charge when it is released, whereas the other editions doesn't include DoD.
People with bronze edition (or whatever the bulk edition is called) needs to buy DoD.

Having Punkbuster doesn't guarantee that hacks won't/can't be used.
Alot is up to the admins, how aggressively they react to the cheaters.

For example CS has been full of cheaters for a long time already, just because the bans are server specific and the cheaters doesn't risk loosing their CD key.

However I'd say AAO is fairly safe of cheaters, because the admins are far more aggressive against cheaters.
Also you can't just create a new account and go back to cheat in an instant (well, nobody tells veterans to play on low honor servers) - you need to first get some honor.
They've also threatened cheaters with legal cases, but I haven't heard has it really happened and would they really do it.

Oh yeah..  if you're going to buy DoD, buy straight away the HL2 silver edition (comes with DoD) instead of HL2 bronze + DoD; you'll save ten bucks.

Sorry Fishu forgot the [sarcasm] and [/sarcasm] tags.

I had to quit AAO because it was the worst hacked game I have ever seen. With PB.

Well, if people like me and few others are cheaters, then yes.
I do constantly hear from few guys how they've been called cheaters.
Few too many times I've been called as a cheater.

Therefore I really have to wonder if the cheaters are mostly just a result of imagination?

No it doesn't, you need to have Steam installed though.

Yes, it's a stand alone but at this time only bought through Valve's Steam (http://www.steampowered.com/) service.  Don't even need to have HL2 to play either.

Since the servers are through the Steam service, they use what I guess is Valve's anti-cheat system called VAC.  Don't know how well it works though, since this is the first time I've connected using Steam.

i have to agree with the comment about america's army.. i saw more cheating when i played aa then i saw in cs, and i played cs from beta 4 up until source came out

it just seemed that there was a higher ratio in aa.. neither is perfect

but Day of Defeat was a great mod for the original hl and ive been personally looking forward to source

It's stand alone? really..!?
damn.. I've been always in impression it is supposed to be working only with HL2 under it.

My deepest apologies with the misinformation, then.

Fishu I don't know maybe those people with colored (for those who haven't played AAO, user id's can't be colored unless they're hacked) user id's that couldn't be kicked via server or punkbuster were just l33t players who were so much better than me that they could blast me through the wall.

They just gleeted at our attempts to server kick, pb kick or even calling the server admins. They did whatever they wanted and PB was worth absolutely nothing. In fact when PB was introduced the amount of blatant hacking skyrocketed.

Untill that it was just suspicion, like people using saw and scoring 100% accuracy.

Why bother? Call of Duty 2 is coming out next month...

DoD:S is stand alone...

FYI,

AA is mst hacked out there btw, all games get hacked but AA is by far and away one game that attracts the kiddies with a vengeance...

The only thing redeeming about AA is its already peaked in popularity so most of the kids are moving on.

The same disclaimer comes with DoD as any FPS. Play on servers and with folks you know.

DoD:S just needs more maps other then that its as fun as ever. I kinda hate the rifle grenades and the rockets though..

fyi those who use ASE the filters should update tomorrow for DoD:S.

I wrote my own for ASE because I hate the steam game browser, not enough filter options. If you use ASE just remeber to update filters tomorrow...

Amazing. I've had those same exact impossible experiences on AA. ;)

I may give DoDS a try.

Unless HT finds a way to get early war planes back in the game here. :)

And BrunoWotan you never did answer my question about why you were wearing shades?

Because DoD is a far better game, sure CoD might have a little more eye candy but as for game play goes, DoD is tops.

I think I'm against the grain on this one.

I'm loving the Kar with this version. Very satisfying to kill the hordes of auto dweebs.

It says DoD, looks like DoD, but doesnt play like DoD.

Its not a retail product... its a Beta with potential.

My list of complaints is long... FPS issues, gameplay issues, bugs galore and it doesnt feel like the original.

That said... Ill stick with it and wait for the patches.
