Was Lucasfilm right/wrong/you don't care in having Episode I as the first DVD release?
Personally, it makes sense in that it is the first episode, but... It's by far my least favorite of the 4 films released. I honestly wouldn't have minded waiting a bit longer and had the original trilogy released with the same treatment that Phantom Menace got.
Oh well, I'm just glad one of them is coming on DVD. At least I can skip to the spiffy lightsaber duels in Ep I if I don't feel up to "meesa da dumbest thingee ever in da movin' pictures!"
And I've still got complete scores to the first 3 on cd... Actually, this post was spurred on while listening to Empire and reading Deja's DVD post! Right now it's in the Hoth Battle. John Williams is the best! Jaws, ET, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, Close Encounters (all Spielberg flicks there too!)

They were wrong. They should have released the trilogy already. It's nothing but corporate greed and building the hype machine.

Well, along the lines of your answer...
would you have preferred just a straight release of the original trilogy (1997 re-releases or originals) without any of the extra stuff, i.e. no directory commentary, no deleted scenes, no special stuff at all??? Because that's the only way we're getting the original trilogy before Ep II comes out. Lucas has said he won't release the movies on DVD unless they're done right, and he has control over it. I think they got that accomplished with Ep I, which is pretty amazing considering they're trying to get post production on Ep II finished up.
I think it's partially along the lines of hype, but I also think it's because ILM/LucasFilm is kinda busy with getting EpII finished up for May 2002 release. It's not nearly as bad as Disney home video releases...

Corperate greed is what will bring the trilogy out on DVD. The initial decision was a bad one.
DivX.. what a turd of an idea. What was Lucas thinking?
Phantom Menace is showing George that there is a ton of money to be made with DVD's. Hopefully, he'll realize that there is a ton more to be made with the Star Wars Trilogy.
Keep your fingers crossed.

Ahh DivX...I gladly dance on your grave!
In answer to the question posed - YES! I would happily buy the original trilogy on DVD without any features. Then, I'd buy it again with one or two features. Then, I'd buy it a third time with more features. Then, I'd buy it a fourth time to get the ones in the special cases with audio commentary from George Lucas. Then . . .

...who already owns 2 different pirated DVD versions of each of the 4 movies for a total of about $200.
