A beutiful day in rural missouri I decide to take my lovely wife and wonderful kids to the pumpkin patch for some holloween fun. Playgrounds for the kids, beer and soda and bbq for all . As I was sitting on the haystack bench I look up in the sky and see a passenger plane way hi leaving a big contrail. It looked like his engines were blown, he was leaving so much smoke. But it couldnt be because he was really cooking! I mean this thing was haulin!. Then there is a nother one. I couldnt see it until the smoke started?!?! WTF? Its like he hit a switch and poof! Another plane way hi, goin 2000mph? As god is my witness, the palnes kept at it all day long, hundreds of them! Making a checkerboard in the sky with their smoke. These were not ordinary planes, they were all white on the belly, I couldnt see theier tops. But regular passenger jets were going too, and thier contrails normal and they had different colors, like normal passenger jets. the white planes were definatly different in speed and contrails. Anybody know what this is??:noid :noid

A strong jetstream can add 150 knots to your speed, and if they're climbing then that would explain why you'd suddenly see the contrails.

definatley not fighters, and i got some pics, but I dont know how to post them here. These planes were going way faster than the passenger jets in the area. I live close to Lambert Airport in St Louis, we have a natl guard fighter wing stationed here, so im used to the fighters,. I have never seen anything like this.

When you see a large number of contrails seeming to converge in one area, you most likely are near a VOR station, one of the radio navigation aids that aircraft use in navigating accross the country. They fly from one VOR station to the next, hence many pass over the same area.
A sprayed mist would be very unlikely to leave a lasting white trail in the sky.
As eagl noted, you saw contrail development.

No way Dago! The secret governent mind control mists are betaryed by their conspicous white pigmentation. This white color is a curious security oversight on their part, but a welcome one as it enables vigilant observers to notice these evil mists and warn others via the internet. Hopefully they never catch on to this obvious weakness in their spraying efforts!!!

well, that seems possible. I seriously dont think these were passenger jets. But the contrails were huge. I mean HUGE.
I realize that alot of airliners are white on the bottom. But every one that was leaving a trail was pure white. But if it were, like you say, VOR aircraft, then they would all be the same color.
Maybe keep your eyes to the sky on clear days and see if you can see any of these planes. They were remarkable.

VOR is the radio system they navigate by, it is not an aircraft or airline. All jets have VOR equipment on board. (VHF Omnidirectional Range navigation system)
You may have seen a VOR transmitting station and not known what it was. It normally is a small building with an antenna on it that looks like a big white bowling pin.
All contrails are white, and most become quite large.

Here's a site by a meteorologist who reports similar sightings of planes contrailing up the skys (i.e. chemtrails). Some of his conclusions seem possible, some seem a bit beyond. Worth having a look I think.

On a related note, I was out one night on top of a building with the sky as clear as I have ever seen it. Suddenly a bright object showed up and streaked across the whole skyline in less than 30 secs. It may have been debris, but this had a artificial glow to it and curved upwards before disappearing. Was very weird to say the least.:noid

Those pictures are airliners with contrails. I was at Jacobs Field today watching my team have their playoffs shattered (a Harry Doyle fanatic featherhead I am) and on the way I noticed that the contrails the jets were making were quite long. One stretched for many tens of miles and was quite neat to see and watch disperse over time.
I pulled out a couple of high enroute charts (Jet Route) and sectionals for aviation and I'm curious to know a general vicinity (no address mind you) just a "st louis" or something similar general location because chances are there is a VOR station somewhere near by. Oddly enough...the VOR stations look a bit like the tin foil hat on this guy if you scrunched it to look like a witches hat:noid

This couold be done at nightt, would not require the use of hi alt fantastic jet planes, or thick plumes of smoke that obviously stays in the upper atmosphere. Despite the antics of some of the crowd above, we are not being mind controled by this magic dust. The most far reaching theroy that I cannot rule out is it some kind of protection from the ozone or an attempt to counter the effects of global warming. The most reasonable solution is, cloud seeding. The effects of cloud seeding would bring more rain, which would grow more pretty flowers amongst other vegetation, which would filter more CO2, which is the leading greenhouse gas. The bad effect of cloud seeding is more dramatic weather. I wont even start with that one:p
And the day I have to relocate for looking up in the sky is the day you can send your children off to be slaves of the state.

Why is is so hard for you to accept the siomple fact that hundreds of passenger planes (most of which are white on the bottom anyway) fly over missouri all day long and leave contrails.
Why the seemingly fanatic need to invent silly expolanations like cloudseeding or ozone saving?

KC-10 Tanker.
Has 3 engines (note 3 contrails). Bottom of aircraft are white (some are night fighter gray). Not many of them left, but there still in use. Krazy big GE turbo Fans on these aircraft. When thay area not to heavy with fuel or cargo, they can scoot.

If you're thinking of the unfinished exhaust at the back of an airplane (I think you are) that's the APU exhaust. Aux. Power Unit which is what runs when airliners are parked on the ground to keep air conditioning, electrical and hydraulic systems running. They also run in flight but are limited from model to model at which altitude it can start and run. You don't typically use these in flight unless you're transferring the bleed air systems and pressurization to it on an approach to use all available engine thrust for a missed approach or go-around. It's basically just a small turbine engine mounted in the airplane.
If you're thinking of an outflow valve for a pressurization system on an airplane that won't do it either. For one, the temperature isn't high enough.
If you're thinking of a lav vent tube...quite possible given some of the people I've seen use the Lavs on airliners nowadays :p

I'll try and address the original question and ignore the madness. I am by no means an expert, whitehawk. But basically the difference in contrails is due to differences in altitude flown by the aircraft and the fact that bigger turbofan engines produce bigger trails.
Thus a 737 at the same altitude as an MD-11 will produce less vapour. Also contrails can only exist in a certain temperature range. That's why they suddenly appeared. The aircraft had probably climbed into the right temperature range. The trail also varies according to the temperature. An aircraft flying in the optimum temperature will produce a much bigger trail than one a couple of thousand feet higher or lower.
That is the boringly prosaic explanation, I'm afraid.
