Title: Kev, Fargo Express, Spit VIII
Post by: Guppy35 on October 03, 2005, 12:14:24 AM
Found a couple of different profiles, and one good image of the nose art on the actual aircraft

Interesting that you can see inaccuracies in both profiles comparing them to the color shot.

I found this profile of Fargo Express. The caption for it says "that this aircraft is often incorrectly depicted as HL-X." The photo seems to bear that out.

Sure looks like its "K".  But note how that profile has the nose camoflage wrong, going down and under the nose.  Betting he based it on some other photos of Bill Skinner's "Lonesome Polecat" that does have the camo taken under the nose.

Do you know why one of the kill markers is white and the others black?

The book it's from says the black is confirmed, and the white probables (If I remember correctly; I'm at work and book is at home).

Thanks guys, should be enough to allow me to do it once the new Spits arrive.

Dan - I take it you'd like that RAAF Spit 9 (UP*S) I did for you re-done on the proper Mk VIII.

If we get the Spit VIII, I think it would be great to have Barney Newman's bird done again if you are up to it :)

Barney Newman was one of three Aussie brothers who all flew during the war.  Barney flew XIIs with 41 squadron before returning to Australia and flying VIIIs with 79 squadron.

His older brother was lost piloting a Beaufighter in the Southwest Pacific

His younger brother was a gunner on a Boston.  He survived but never really recovered from his war experience and the loss of both his older brothers.

Barney was lost on a strafing run in the Halhamera Islands in late August 45.

Image is of Barney Newman on the wing of his VIII.  I got it from one of his squadron mates from 79 Squadron.  I got to know of Barney through my Spit XII research and 41 Squadron.

the "What? :P" was more in line with you giving me odd looks.

The song is actually "Barney Google" but I couldn't resist.

No harm, no foul :)

Figured maybe you'd like the story behind that particular Spit skin Kev was talking about

Several scale model companies believe it to be K.

Found these on the web:

SuperScale decals offers a decal sheet with HL-K.

CFSS skin of Fargo Express.

HEy Guppy,

That last picture of your first post I seen in the book Fighter Command in Color.

There is another Spit in there called "Lonesome Polecat".  That would be a great skin!

Whoops!  Sorry, just went and read the entire thread.  You have mentioned that plane already.
