Title: 88mm AA batteries - it can be done!
Post by: Kweassa on October 03, 2005, 06:36:20 AM
It'd be pretty simple. All the basic concepts required for its implementation is already in the game.

* Make up an aiming system simular to that of the bomb-sight in bombers

* If the intended target is flying steady at a set altitude, set an "aiming reticle" or "binocular view" or something, select the intended target with the key as you would select a padlock targert. It will zoom in and "lock-on" the target, and then you can press a key to set shell bursting alt.

* Like the bombsight, the longer you hold it down the more accurate the altitude info will be calculated and set for the gun. And then, like the 5" gun, the gunner will have to move the gun's bearing and lead angle manually and fire away.

* If the bomber pilot, seeing flak puffs appear around his plane, changes his alt, then the 88mm gunner will have to "recalibrate the alt info". Ofcourse, the gunner will have no direct hints that his aim is right or wrong, or if the buff changed alt.

* This way, it won't be as destructive and "easy-mode" as those annoying 5" guns in capital ships. If bombers, or some other planes such as jabos, are detected early and they fly straight and level, then they'd have high chance of being aimed accurately by existing 88mm batteries.

* You will also be able to switch the guns to "direct fire" mode - which will basically fire the guns just like the 5" guns without alt calculation, except the effective range will only be within 3.0~4.0k distance as a gameplay concession. This mode is to shoot at low alt targets that rush into a field such as jabos or deck buffs, or, when using AP ammo, shooting tanks.

(The firing rate would have to be a bit slower than a 5" gun in this mode to prevent abuse)

* So basically, a fighter like aircraft that moves around and changes alt a lot, wouldn't have to worry much about 88mms unless a lot of 88mm guns are working together. The 88mm will mainly pose a threat to jabo fighters enroute, and bombers high and low, and tanks, when AT 88mms with AP shells are set up.

* The 88mm gun would not be a set gun at field. The players can up a 88mm truck and tow it, and set the gun up where he pleases. So, many players will be able to take out the 88mm truck and set up a nice battery of 88mm AA guns where it's needed.

It'd add a lot to the game.

For instance, an anti-tank defense can be set up, consisting of multiple 88mm batteries with AP shells. It would be virtually impregnable to GV attacks.

People may set these defense perimeters around towns. In this case, an air-raid would be needed to take the AT guns out first. The defenders probably would need to set up AA vehicles or AA 88mm trucks around the AT 88mm batteries to defend.. and etc etc.. various situations.

Or, if a GV spawn point is somewhere in between two hostile fields, setting up large amounts of AA 88mms in this spot would be greatly helpful in taking out enemy fighters/bombers enroute to a friendly field. In this case, a ground war may break out, due to this fact, which hostile forces would fight to claim the sweetspot for setting up 88mm guns.. and etc etc..

Just having those 88mm guns, attached to tow trucks, would make the game much more fun!

I like it. The only thing i want add - show current alt somethere in left corner (like range for main cruiser's guns) and allow to change it directly by two keys ("Page up" / "Page down" for example).

Easier still you get range info on the icon................

Point the default sight reticule at the target and dial range into a "calculator" using KP +/- and AH sets the fuse alt appropriately. (range & angle)

The calculator is selected when ordinance is switched to AA.

This allows an AA screen to be set up infront of incoming.

Further if local freindly air craft can give accurate altitude data then that range can be set with the same KP+/- but then the gunner is only looking at the "calculator" alt read out.

I would love to see a truck with this as one of its trailer options.

AP and HE options with variations re ordinance load outs chosen in the hanger and loaded in the truck. Camo when deployed and no icon.

I like all these ideas, {which I've stated a million times before}

The gun "should" not be a point-n-click type set up. I realize it's virtually impossible to recreate real world physics for a game or sim, but some have come very very close.

I would like to see "Flak" batteries avail in the GV line up.

They should take time to master just like the Ostie or a good bomber.

They should require "X" amount of time to deploy and maybe even require a crew of two or more? Just a thought.

It would also be nice to have other types of AA guns to be used for defense. The current field AA guns are easily knocked out and are of little use for base defense.

The Ostwind and M16 are "fair" at best for defense, but again are far to ineffective against large A/C or huge groups of fighters.

The twin and quad mount 40mm Bofors gun would be a good start along with any quad mount 20mm cannon like the Wirbelwind or deployable gun platform.

I honestly believe this would "add" more to the game rather than take away. The current "bomb out everything and vultch the field" is growing quite tiresome for most.  IMO

it needs to be implemented for ToD as an update for the dated puffy ack system currently in use.

with the current system the escort fighters are gonna be shot down in droves, and the bombers are gonna be fine.

And if they are too overkill for GVs then put them into a trench so they can only fire upwards.

Trying to hit a Lanc six times with an Osti is impossible for me unless he turns around and comes back. Then I might get the other three in him. Of course that leaves the other two in the flight to deal with.

The VHs are definately the high value target in this game. Seems I spend more time in the tower or jumping field to field to find a battle that still has the VH up than fighting.

Would you also propose that said 88's also have HE and AP rounds?
Seems you could use them for attack on towns also. Set up like Kweassa stated with a land gunnery mode set up for attacking towns .
Direct gunnery mode for defence of gv's

Any addition which purpose is to make your fun-time shorter is a very bad addition, except for historical escenaries.

That sounds like a really good idea... Well the best idea I have ever heard before:aok ... Except the b1-29 of course. :lol

Easy, 88 batteries here and there will make your "live" time (fun)much shorter in AH. It would be a new addition against the fun-time of the flyers.

Not everyone flys all the time.
Please try to be a litle more open minded.
At first i dintn't think gving would be all that much fun. But now I gv frequently because it is fun. Try it and i dont mean spawn camp  actualy attack a base . I bet it will get the blood pumping just like a good furball if you do it rite.

Then stay away from the guns!!
