20% of Seniors Flunk High School Graduation Exam.
Nearly 100,000 statewide are in jeopardy of not earning diplomas, a report says. They have until June to pass the two-part, two-day test.
-
Sure wish the rest of the country had the same exam so we could have a point of comparison.

I am the last to defend non english speakers and most of all... any public school system... both should dissapear in my opinion but..
In the case of the local school... two non native english speakers (mexicans) learned to speak entglish in two years and got A's in math. they passed their english classes but...
The exit exam had mya angelou frigging poetry in it! that was the "english" portion...
I don't even know what the broad is trying to say.... why would they?
How would any of us do on a foreign language skill test if we had to translate obscure and idiotic poetry in that language?
just more public school nonsense in my opinion...

What good is Shakespeare, when you can't read the comics.

mt.. I think you missed the point... it was the exit exam for english that asked for the meaning of passages of poetry that were obscure and stupid... that is not a true test of english comprehenssion in my mind... Nor is shakespear... it is good to read and enjoy but it is not anything to do with english language comprehenssion...
I find that the fact that you think that blacks are treated unfairly when they can't understand simple english and aren't given tests in ebonics to be ironic in light of your seeming to want non native english speakers to understand shakespear and of all things... angelou.... maybe you thought I said..... angela davis?

I'll bite on the troll... how is this the teachers' fault, Rip?
-
I liked David Alan Grier's impersonation of Maya Angelou. Anybody got a video?
-
Yeah Guns
Look at the smear adds the teachers union is running against Arny now...
Man you would think he was personaly coming into schools and hitting kids with a "make them Stupid stick".

WHAT!??
I never ever said that!
Are you getting a tech of the oldtimers?
-
Ok, I'll bite...
But the report by the Virginia-based Human Resources Research Organization showed that tens of thousands of students, particularly those in special education and others who speak English as a second language, may fail the test by the end of their senior year despite remedial classes, after-school tutoring and other academic help.
And this is the teachers' fault? Maybe you should spend a week observing a special needs or an ESL class. Watch what the teachers go through and do for their students. You will be amazed. After that, maybe you will know which is failing the students, the teachers or the test.
I will be the first to say that there are some horrible teachers out there. However, I find that the vast majority work very hard and go above and beyond what they need to for their students. Most even try to get through to the kids that have no desire to even try to succeed in the class.

I really don't understand California politics. I watch TV and all I see is adds from both sides.
1. Prop 71-9 are bad and the Gov. will be killing cancer ridden orphans
2. Props whatever are the best thing for California since the beach boys and the other sides are idiots
They pose two COMPLETLY different viewpoints of what these propositions do. I mean they are 180 out. What's the point? Can't people be trusted to read plain english in black and white (translated at the cost of taxpayers to 5 other major languages and available apon request into 10 others) what these laws actually do??
-
The " This pooposition is supported by California apple pes, orphans, grandmothers and puppies and opposed only by child molesting war criminals" marketing campaigns every election are exatlt what turn me away from politics...

LOL Lazs! I cannot for the life of me imagine you reading a Shakespeare sonnet! :lol
Erm... but I couldn't either. I was tortured with Macbeth for a year, and tortured with Henry IV Part 1 for a further 2 years. I could never understand all that olde englishe... got a Grade 9 in the Eng. Lit. O level - the lowest possible grade.
But I read lots of books/newspaper articles, so I agree that hacking Shakespeare is not a yardstick of one's ability to do that.

beet.. we had to study shakespear in high school.. I actualy didn't mind it.. some of it was kind of funny and it is interesting now to notice that so many movies have his plots.
MT... you don't think obscure and silly poetry is a little strange for an exit exam in english?

the reason that ahhny is the great satan to the union of socialst teachers is..
He backs a balanced budget initiative that is on the ballot for november. The inititive says that we can't spend more than we take in even if it means that we don't increase the school budget by 10% per kid every year...
The other initive he backs is... unions would have to get permission from each member every year to spend their money on the commie candidates that the teachers back... How this works is... at the beginning of the year you sign a paper that says that you either want the portion of your dues that goes to political parties to be used as the union sees fit or not. If you don't like backing boxer and finesteirn and kerrie or gore or some ex black panther then you would say no....
it is really too fair of a concept for teachers to understand... beyond their socialist comprehension level.... "give people choices?" "but they will make the wrong ones!"
We really really really need vouchers in kalifornia..

I don't think Maya Angelou is either obscure or silly.
Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me.
They try so much
But they can't touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them
They say they still can't see.
Seems to me she knows you pretty well lazs.
-
so you would flunk someone if they said that the poem meant that men tried to touch something she was hiding but they couldn't because it was invisiible?
In my case tho... I thank her for hiding it and ignore her efforts to show me... If she thinks I care then that is her problem.
