Dont hear much about the Dixie Chicks anymore.
Looks like with one ill-advised comment from a mouthy singer, they have all but disappeared.
Kind of a shame really, they were talented and made some good music, they were at the top of their games and careers, making a ton of money.
Now, never hear from them anymore. I wonder if they will ever regain any of the fame they had and lost.
I dont really mourn them, I was angry at the comment and the pandering it represented.

One of them has been busy making a baby and getting it launched this year.
I think people saw the event for what it was.
If you like their music, you can ignore their politics. Pretty much the same with all entertainers... 'cept HJ.

I dont agree, if something happens, or is said, that you find so contemptable, something that even approaches treasonable, you could, and probably should, not patronize their work or pay to enrichen them out of principle.
I would never pay for any Jane Fonda work, and I won't spend money on the Dixie Chicks short of them accepting and admitting what Natalie said was wrong, or at least should not have been said.
They have the right, guaranteed and protected by our soldiers to say what they want. It's their choice to then excerise that right in a questionable way for an entertainer.
Boycotting is my choice to make, and I choose to make it.

While 3 years of working part time running a Karoke Show in a bar listening to bull dike lesbian prison guards sing various renditions of their music, I can't say that I'm a huge fan.
I have to agree with Dago. If some over paid actor lets his politics get the better of him and get's diareah of the mouth in front of the nation I do not tend to enjoy their entertainment their after. Example: Jane Fonda, I refused to watch her new movie with my wife and she still can't figure out why.
Sean Penn, yet another example of somone with too much time on their hands EXCEPT: instead of bad mouthing Bush about the kyoto treaty Pen actually went to New Orleans and physically helped people......bonus points for action.
Tim Robbins, Yet another Duschebag that I will not waist my time watching.
Exception: Bono of U2. This guy is an activist but unlike his other musician friends he backs it up with action by physically going to impoverished nations and using his fame to the good of others.
-
The Dixie Dikes started of with a Miss Piggy and numerous patrons from Homer Simpon`s local bar.
A media promotion and nothing more.
Bad mouth the big T and it`s back in the garbage can from which they came. No biggy, no loss.
No talent to begin with, but a straight razor to cut their own throat. I found it quite humuorous and enjoyable, but then again I always do when some morons step on their own tongue. :)
-
the fat one screwed it up for all of them. They have a freedom of speech to say what they want just as I have a freedom to stop buying their stuff.

On the other hand, when the rest of the world tends to view the U.S. popular culture as the "mainstream", for them to go into a foreign country in time of crisis and say what they said is a little different.
-
"Just so you know, we're ashamed the President of the United States is from Texas."
With all of the Bush bashing that goes on in this BBS, people still get bent out of shape because of the above quote? It's not like they went to Iraq and acted as human shields.
Yes, if I were a Texan I might be pissed off. Yes, I think it is dumb to say such a thing on stage in a foreign country. Yes, if I paid $75 for a concert ticket I would be pissed if the act spent even one second talking politics. But come on. CD burning?
I am ashamed that Taft is the Governor of Ohio, and his 15% approval rating shows that I am not alone. How is this different than what the Chicks said about Bush in 2003?
Personally, I stopped listening to the Chicks when they got all weird.

That's BS. I saw them play at a fair in the late 80's. They didn't sign with Sony Records until around '96

To me he is far worse than Robbins(who I agree is a total donuthead) and I won't pay a dime to see either of them.
As I've said before Penn doesn't act in his movies. He just reads the lines like he normally speaks. Either a retard or an angry retard.

I don't care for Penn, but show me proof (other than the fictional article in the Australia's Herald Sun) stating that Penn brought a film crew.

Pointing out the obvious about dubya isn't a smart thing to do when your target demographic is rednecks. So I guess dubya isn't the only tard from texas.
-
they were very talented musicians, and entertainers.
hell when their first album came out natalie was hot :aok
i was a fan, but dont listen much any more, except a few occasional songs from the last album that have a real bluegrass feel.
whoever said they were the "spice girls" nope. natalie was professionally trained at berkley school of music, her father a very famous steel guitar player in nashville. emelie and marty, the other 2 sisters, played on street corners in texas, and can actually play the banjo / dobro / fiddle better than most of us could ever hope to.
on a side note, there was a relative of one of them who played AH a few years back lol
-
yeah, they are talented musicians.
A spice girls comparison doesnt work. The spice girls were a corporate invention, the Dixie Chicks built themselves into what they became with hard work, talent, training and experience. The had to fight to get a contract.
Unfortunately with one stupid comment, and without the commercial sense to shutup and do some serious damage control, their careers came to a screeching halt.
This had to cost them millions.
dago
-
I doubt that the Bush comment cost them much at all. I doubt that they have ever enjoyed a better year than 2003.
According to Billboard in 2003:
#3 Top Pop Artis - Duo/Group
#3 Top Billboard 200 Album
#4 Top Billboard 200 Album Artist
#3 Top Internet Album
#1 Top Billboard 200 Album Artist - Duo/Group
#4 Top Hot 100 Singles Artist - Duos/Group
#4 Top Country Artist
#1 Top Country Artist - Group/Duo
#2 Top Country Albums
#2 Top Country Album Artist
#1 Top Country Album Artist - Group/Duo
#3 Top Country Single Sales
source (http://www.rockonthenet.com/archive/2003/bbyearend.htm)
They may have come to a screeching halt, but I'm betting it has more to do with babies than Bush.
-
sandman, that was all before the booosh comment.
they were completely off the charts less than a month after... the local country station has just this past month started playing them again, only later at night, and there is another local country station that still wont play their music

True, they haven't released a studio album since 2002.

Easy fix, instead of the Dixie Chicks listen the The Dixie Cups :D
going to the chapel and... going to get married...

Mustaine, the Bush comment was in March of 2003. Those are the year-end results from Billboard.
In August of 2003, they finished their summer tour with $61 million in gross sales, the top grossing country tour for the year... 57 sold out dates and third overall in concert sales.
source (http://www.tennessean.com/business/archives/03/08/37696199.shtml)
You guys are desperately hoping that Maine's comment cost her, but the facts don't support the opinion. The Dixie Chicks are quite rich enough to stay at home and raise children for awhile.

I submit that they would have been the highest grossing entertainers in the world in 2003 had maine not spoken out so poorly against a sitting president while entertaining in a foreign land.
2003 should have been the years the Dixie Chicks blew the roof off. Reality appears to be, to me at least, that they have withdrawn from public life. Are they even maiking music anymore???
Your suggestion that babies are the reason seems a convenient assumption to support your left bias, I suspect the baby making is a simply a result of having a lot of time on their hands (no pun intended) to support my right bias.
Form this day forward we shall refer to the gals as
"The Chixie Dicks"

Witch hunt? Better get a thesarus and look up the definition.
This was basically a review of where they are at today after the controversy two years ago.
They did well in 2003 for a couple reasons, one, sales of most concert tickets were complete before the controversy really got wings, and two, they do have a loyal fan base.
But, record sales really dont pay the artist much, most money comes from concerts and radio play residuals. With radio play at almost zero, they lost that revenue stream, and without concerts, they dont have that either.
Granted, they are already rich, and will never go hungry, and I wouldnt want them too, but I find it interesting how they have dropped off the radar all together.
Yes, they been off having babies, but that doesnt account for the almost complete lack of news, music or radio play.
dago
-
also, IIRC emily and martie were both preggers before this...
i know 1 of them has a kid in 2002, another had one in 2003 or 2004, either way, they didnt "start having kids" after the incident, they were well on their way to that anyway.
-
I'm not surprised that radios have ceased to play an album that was released in 2002. Can you think of any artists that are still getting significant airplay for albums done in 2002 or even 2003?
As for the long hiatus... It seems to be the norm for the artists that enjoy monstrous success. They disappear for 3-5 years and then release a new album and start touring. Nothing new here.
Lastly, there is this one minor detail (http://www.hist.umn.edu/~ruggles/Approval.htm). There seems to be no shortage in people that are unhappy with Bush. If the approval of the Dixie Chicks is indeed low, wouldn't the approval of Bush be better?
-
Don't know about you all but i still hear them on every country station in the Kansas City area. Granted not as much but they only quit playing them for a short while around here.

The Dixie Chicks would be #1 if they would just do a few Hank Willaims covers.

I've never liked the Dixie Chicks. I consider their "sound" annoying. Not many women can sing country very well, and the Dixie Chicks aren't among that select few.
It's probable that whats-her-name getting fat has more to do with any loss of success than any words any of them said. As with several other talentless female groups, some people bought their records because they were "hot".

If you are talented you overcome stuff like that. Remember "we're bigger than Jesus"?
Anyone see the Angry Beavers cartoon spoof on that? They were a big hit as a disco gig and Dagget says "we're bigger than sliced bread", and their fans rebel against them burning their records and protesting. Pretty funny.

Au contaire mon ami.
He can play flute with his left hand, while using his left foot to dive to a 1000 feet below the surface where his "Grotto" is. Mind you that while he is doing it, he's holding Erica Eleniak in his right arm (singing a lullaby to her) and fending off sharks, bears, crickets and crocodiles with his right foot.
Don't tell me you can do even a 97% of it.
P.S. We all know that he has one part of his body fully relaxed at this point. Just imagine what would happened if he engaged THIS weapon.

Just off the top of my head.
Keanu Reeves
Stephen Baldwin
Madonna
Ben Affleck
Sylvester Stallone
Steve Guttenberg
I named 6 since I threw Madonna in there.
There are so many, it's sort of unnerving.
-
You forgot Tom Cruise.
-
Hey hey hey skywolf! That's a travesty!
Stallone is not a bad actor!
-
Alec Baldwin
Stephen Baldwin
That other Baldwin
Keanu Reeves
Rob Schneider
-
Rob Schnieder?
Since when is he an actor?
Bob Hope, Jerry Lewis, Lou Costello, Mel Brooks, Will Farrell, none of these were or are actors.
They were or are funny people in movies.
-
Worst:
1. Stallone
2. The Baldwins
3. Van Damme
4. Burt Reynolds (Remember "Heat"?)
5. Keanu Reeves
Best:
1. Tom Hanks
2. Russel Crowe (He's a Richard tho)
3. Ben Kingsley
4. Robert Duvall
5. Ed Harris

lol....
this thread rules....
I don't get to travel as much as I'd like to, but still, there's nothing quite like a trip down memory lane. Quite economical too!
The first sentence: "Looks like with one ill-advised comment from a mouthy singer, they have all but disappeared." - dago
Do you remember those dark and heady days when the White House was advising that people "need to watch what they say, watch what they do?"
I don't know about you, but for me, that was the day when the red flags started popping up faster than any game of whack-a-mole I've ever played.
However..... All is well that ends well...
And the Dixie Chicks' very next album? It's number one in the 1st week. The thoughtful are growing ever more willing to criticize this train wreck of a presidency, and in what can only be described as miracle of science, the press are actually regenerating testicles without surgical intervention (although the process may indeed take decades).
And the defenders?
It turns out, funnily enough, that they only ever did represent 29% of the population.... max.
They were those folks who got so worked up about country bands and comedians....
and..... most importantly, were the first ones to roll over and play dead.
They were the first ones to get so absolutely freaked-out-scared that it was all they could do to muster a yelp for their governmental nannies to implant a soother into their misdirected, frightened and confused mouths.
No wonder their words sound so garbled.
They were the first. The first to willingly turn over their lives to any governmental prerogative, at the drop of a hat, whether it be misguided policy or pure run-of-the-mill propaganda. It didn't matter. They were gonna drop, and then scream at you for not dropping along with them - terrified that you might give away their position.
"Take my rights, please, but just don't let them hurt me!"
So THESE people laid down... first.... and willingly..... and only there merest hint of arm twisting sent them scattering like a herd of African gazelles. Braying to the rest of us that we must also lay down and be very, very afraid.
Highly unusual times... to be sure.
But.... Screw these people.
Cowards, and those without the ability to think critically, will always be amongst us. They will always tell everyone else why we should not like, for example, a country band. Keep in mind - it is these people who always lay down first. Who are the very first to willingly give up their rights. Who are the first to go running like frightened puppies into the loving and embracing arms of the government.
They were wrong to try and make everyone feel that fear and lashing out was the proper reaction to an attack. Because any response fueled by anger, fear and retribution.... and fear..... and fear... is bound to suffer some serious hurdles. And anyone who gets sucked into it with them is just getting used by people with half their intelligence and a tenth of their courage.
It's not that hard to spot, but this thread provides somewhat of a good guideline; if you need to lash out at the Dixie Chicks, then a recalibration is probably in order... and it's probably in nobody's best interest but their own that you curl up into the fetal position alongside them.
Here's the Dixie Chicks on Letterman the other night. (http://youtube.com/watch?v=k1cHg3ovhac&search=dixie%20chicks%20letterman) Pretty damned good.

I recently saw a snippet of a new music video by the chicks. The only reason it was just a snippet was because the music on the video was so overproduced with strings and BS hollywood ambience that I could hardly hear the music for what it was. They will need to back off the rediculous overproduction and get back to making good solid music if they want any attention from me. Sounded like mutt lange on unusually extremely high doses of audio steroids. yuck :furious

DIXIE CHICKS DIDN'T BACK DOWN, DIDN'T MAKE NICE-- DEBUTED AT #1 THIS WEEK
Ya see...
May 31 is actually in-between the last two posts from driftglass. In other words, it doesn't exist.
I know yer on some new bent to try and make me out for some kind of pilfer.... but wth?
Anyways, the new post from drifty is good. Well worth the wasted effort in trying to figure out what you were after.

They still git booed in Texas. Could care less about anywhere else.

I just think it is so kewl that your new hero is Rush Limbaugh in drag. ;)
I never listened to or read Limbaugh because he's an obnoxious shirt-stirrer. Your new icon of the Left is cast in the same mold.
But....worship as you will.
Oh and my apologies...that Dixie Chicks article was from the mppffft "Down with Tyranny" blog. I didn't watch carefully enough as I searched Drifty for your opinions and it linked outside.
:D

I'd hit all three of them, seperately or together. I even downloaded a bunch of their tunes. Don't like Bush, eh, whatever. Just take your clothes off & shut up....or don't, I don't really care that much but I have never once in my life been able to bash an attractive nude chick, I ususally can't even talk as long as they are in view, just grunt, smile & nod appreciatively.:rofl
