Impending layoffs were announced at my company on Thursday, June 28th that would occur on Monday, July 9th. :(
I know that one or more members of the QA department will be laid off. I am among the 5 people that make up the QA department. It is possible that they could lay off the entire San Francisco QA department, but that would be stupid so I don't think it'll happen.
I truly have no idea if I am going to be one of those laid off on Monday.

Man! That sucks!
Sorry to hear about anyone or any company laying people off.
I went thru many layoff sessions at my work place and always managed to avoid all of them.
Harrowing time though!
Good Luck!! I keep my fingers crossed for ya!! :)
-
Good luck to you Karnak!
-
Sorry to hear that Karnak. :(
I've been through it a number of times myself in the last few years. I hope things work out in your favor.
-
Good Luck Karnak!

I believe that my company is hiring. Send me an email.

welcome to the bay area unemployment club.
ay my job they laid off just enough people to not get attention - about 250. then they offered the rest of us massive paycuts, more duties and ridiculous working conditions so we would leave on our own. pretty schmart huh-
the rest that were left got a chance to move to arizona or thousand oaks.....joy. good way to avoid just firing everyone. come on across the bridge someday we'll get really drunk and panhandle.
-
Thanks guys. :)
I'm not worried about myself. I am not one of those Americans that are 1 paycheck from the streets. I probably have 6 months before my Mortgage payments drain my savings, and that's assuming I don't get any job. I'm sure that I can get a job within 1 week if I'm not picky, and full time at only $13.00 an hour will pay all of my bills.
The ironic thing is that if I don't get laid off, I'll probably get a raise.
The people I'm worried about are people like my boss (I think he stands a good chance of being laid off) who has a family to worry about and the Fillipino programer who would have to leave the US 10 days after being laid off (I would be very surprised if she is laid off, she's one of the three people designing the backend archetecture (sp) for the new version of our product).
I'll make it either way.

Good luck, mate!

I hardly ever say this but ain't we all glad that the Republican's have the White House now :(
Hope it works out for the best for you . They have been laying off the new people left and right for the last 4 weeks here in Michigan . Factory jobs , yes but they buy stuff that we all use also .
I still have to call u SIR also , I "see" your up to four stars already , hehe .
take care

Keep the faith, Karnak. Even if you lose your job, all is not lost. America truly is the land of opportunity, even with the Republicans in charge of the Executive branch. ;)
I have a B.S. in Music Education, and was a Band Director for five years. When I got fed up with everything that goes along with being a teacher(low pay, high stress, discipline problems, parental apathy, etc...) I resigned my position. I was out of work for 4 days, and then got my first job in the computer industry.
It was a humble first job, mind you, but in five years I worked my way up to software development, and now I have a great job in the largest computer company in the world.
My point is...this is one country where you can actually change careers relatively quickly and successfully, if you're smart and can sell yourself.
I hope you don't lose your job, Karnak. But if you do, there is opportunity out there. Good luck my friend.

What company would that be banana? I'm getting my master's in Software Engineering in a month and might be looking for a job change...

Yeah, and isn't it amazing that it only took them about 5 1/2 months to totally tank the economy.
There were certainly no warning signs that this was coming during the last two years of the Democratic reign.
Check this out for a quick refresher; notice the DATE of the report:
http://english.peopledaily.com.cn/200012/28/eng20001228_58995.html (http://english.peopledaily.com.cn/200012/28/eng20001228_58995.html)
Thursday, December 28, 2000, updated at 08:34(GMT+8)
"The Conference Board, one of the leading US business research groups, said in a survey that the Composite Index of Leading Economic Indicators stands at 105.3, down 0.2 percent in November following a revised 0.3 percent drop in October and a 0.1 percent rise in September.
...
Since the high of 106.3 in January of this year, the leading index was down in eight of the past 10 months, the survey said, adding that this is in sharp contrast to a 1.5 to 2 percent gain annually in previous years.
...
The index is pointing to "significantly slower growth in the first half of 2001," said Conference Board economist Ken Goldstein."
Let's see.. BEFORE the bloody election the index was DOWN in 7 of the PREVIOUS 9 months and down in November as well making it 8 for 10.
...and you want to hang this TOTALLY on a Republican in the White House right?
Might as well toss in California's energy crunch. It got the most news AFTER the Republican went into 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, so it must be HIS fault. Nothing could have occured to cause it before that, I'm sure.
Now little Georgie may or may not turn out to be considered a "good" President. That remains to be seen.
However, hanging this on him after less than 6 months while totally ignoring what went on the previous year is a bit much.
Remember what happened to the DOW between Jan '00 and April '00? Remember the warnings then?
Didn't think so.....
Karnak, good luck again. Sorry for hijacking the thread a bit but ... man, how can people forget history so d*mn fast....
Sorry.

Toad,
Right on the numbers !
Keep in mind that Clinton reaped the benfits of a great Economy that was started by the Replican white house in the 80's. Almost nothing economic happens over night. It takes years in most cases to see major LASTING changes.

airspro,
Actually I've never bought into the idea that either political party has any significant effect on the economy. I don't believe that this slowdown is the fault of any politician or politicians.
The fault of many, many naive investors and venture capitalists? Maybe so.
Thanks again guys. I have full confidence in my abilities and skills. I don't think that I'll have any problems getting by. This is comming from a pessimist.
I am also not following the stereotype of a Liberal in looking for assistance or handouts (that is the stereotype you Conservatives buy into, right?), rather I am taking full responsibility for myself and trusting in my abilities and skills to see me through. :p

You are absolutely right about the parties and the economies. Either one, they're the first to take credit and the last to take blame. The truth is probably that they control the economy the way a remora controls a shark.
As for that last bit... it just means your'e not truly a Liberal. ;)
A joke son, I say that's a Joke there! as Foghorn Leghorn used to say on TV cartoons.
Good Luck to you sir!

Well, it's big and it's blue, and it's a three-letter acronym. :)
IBM is a great company to work for, actually. Sure, there's a lot of the typical corporate BS to put up with, but they believe in the balance between work and family. Suits my philosophy fine.
-
Well, I just got a raise to 65k.
Now I get to see if I still have a job on Monday.

Karnak, since age 18 I've been thru a lay-off (9 months unemployed) 2 union strikes (costing me 114 days of pay), 3 "warn" notices (60 day notice of intention to lay off) and believe me, for EVERY dark cloud, a silver lining awaits beneath it. In 41 years of life, I've always discovered a silver lining in dark clouds. Keep your attitude, and your faith, don't let it go sour, it only adds to your predictament in bad ways. By being positive, positive things happen!
-
I might add, that the only way I've survived in the technical field in the last 20 years is by not shoe-boxing myself into knowing just one 'thing'....I've always taken advantage of off-hour training, for various classes, and moved around on my own will to various jobs within the company I work for, allowing flexibility when the lay off notices come.
I'm proud to say, that I know alot about NOTHING, but I know alittle about EVERYTHING, that's the key to survival in the technical world we live in today.
Background since age 18:
~Construction (Roofer)
~Painter
~Mechanical Shaper operator
~Bartender
~Restaurant Manager
~Tool Maker
~NC Programmer
~Numerical Control Machinist
~Tool Designer
~Engineering Applications Analyst
That's 10 different careers in 22 years. Flexibility allows income to continue to flow from many different avenues when push comes to shove.

I would only add to this the ability to learn quickly and the ability to sell yourself to potential employers.

Agreed, and actually the first part about learning quickly is part of my resume! I keep it up to date, and revise it yearly, for that 'just in case' scenario...
-
wishing you well Karnak
good luck Monday
-
Thanks Ripsnort, Eagler.
-
Ripsnort please tell me you don't still have that blurb on yer resume that goes "the ability to learn quickly, works well with others...etc." Those are only on people's resume for high school summer jobs when they have nothing else to put on it :)
Oh and best of luck Karnak!

Welp,....., I got the middle, and worst, of the "two" options.
I was not laid off today, July 9, however I am now assigned to support a product that we are trying to divest ourselves of. Once we have either divested the product, or buried it I will then be laid off. This will all happen in the next 60 days.
This was a new, unexpected and unpleasant surprise sprung this morning. I had steeled myself to either continue at my company or get a new job, but not to be placed in Limbo.
Furthermore, if the east coast company buying the product offers me, here on the west coast, a job I will have to decline it and indications are that my current company would not have to pay severance as was paid to those laid off today.
What's more, the severance is just wrong for me. The way it was done is to offer two weeks plus one week for each year that the employee was at the company, with a minimum severance of four weeks. I have worked here for two years. Two plus two equals four. Thus, I have worked here the exact amount of time to get the least return on my severance pay.
Lastly the severance is paid out as continuation salary, which means that I will not be able to apply for unemployment benefits (hey, I've been paying into it for years) until the four weeks of severance pay has passed.

That just plain sux Karnak, sorry to hear the bad news. Go to Monster.com, I found my current job there in 1 day. Well actualy it took 2 days, 1 to find it and the next day to drive to Austin to the interview/hire.
Also, consider a move to Tx :) Our economy is pretty diverse and seems to be trucking along rather well. Houston seems to be stronger than Austin right now, but even with all the hi-tech layoffs this year, Austin is still plugging away. And there's no state income tax :)
Best wishes though my old leftist  pal. I hope things go well for you in the near future with the job hunt. I'd hire you, if I had a company that needed somebody :)

Damn Karnak...that sucks. I am kinda in a similar boat. The company I work for is a contract warehousing outfit and the company we support is giving all of their logistics services to another company...confused yet?
The warehousing and inventory management is among the first part being transitioned to the new company. Anyway, with our contract going away people in my sector are beginning to transfer out to positions within our company that support other facets of the overall operation rather than just warehousing. This is leaving us short-handed in the warehousing side and also leaving us a difficult choice. Do we: A - transfer out to another position that may be around longer or B - leave now and find another place of employment. Another factor in this decision is that we are eligible for a bonus if we stick around and help make the transition as smooth as possible.
So at what point do I decide that the bonus is worth the risk of sticking it out when the possibility of all the other jobs being filled in the other departments means that I will be forced to seek employment elsewhere? The good thing in my case is that the unemployment will kick in the day our contract expires if I havent been hired on with the company taking over our jobs. And I dont have to worry about moving to another coast.
Good luck to you sir....I hope it all works out for you.
-
Good luck Karnak.
I think that Ripsnort has the right of it...
Since I was 18 I have been a soldier, A car shuffler, a PC salesman, a tech support guy and more kinds of programmer than you can shake a stick at.
Keep your eye on the ball. This will work out for you.

The Bay Area is crashing, and that's exactly why I bailed out 6 months ago. It' just begun, and it's going to get alot worse.
You can always move 3 hours East to Reno and become a professional gambler or even cooler, a Elvis impersonator. I can't vouch for the $13/hr, but at least you'd have snappy work attire. :D
-
Seems like a dead end. Why would you stay there?
Screw the unemployment, who needs it? You have at least 60 days to find a job.
Good luck!
-
Sorry to hear that Karnack
At least you now know your fate and have 60 days to job hunt.
best of luck
-
Well, not much to say Karnak.
I hope it comes out well for you. You never know... this may be opportunity knocking. Maybe you'll find something you like even better or take this as a chance to try something you've always wanted to do.
Good Luck once again.
-
Thanks guys.
I'll do fine.
Udie,
Thanks for the suggestion, but I am rather tied to California.
I bought my mom's house in January to keep her from losing it (I'd been making the payments on it for about a year prior to buying it). So I've got that responsibility that I have to take care of.
-
As others have said, you now have 60 days to find a job.
That said, why don't you proactively approach the likely purchaser of the product? Say that you're really enthusiastic about the future and that you're looking to pursue your career alongside this product under the new ownership, but... Get them to give you a very generous relocation package.
-
sorry to hear about your lay-off comming. if you think you are going to be on unemployment for any length of time you should e-mail me- cpt_apathy@hotmail.com
i work construction and am on u/i for many weeks a year and i can give you some advice of things you can do in preparation that may up your weekly rate to around $100 more than the california max.
