This is too cool, and just imagine how fun it would be to watch. Unlike its land sibling. ;)

Saw a bit on the Fox the other day. Apparently, this could be pretty big.

"The rocket planes, or X-Racers, will compete on a course two miles long, one mile wide and about 5,000 feet in altitude--right over the spectators. "
Gee....that could never end badly!
As far as NASCAR goes, it's really boring if all you watch is the big tracks (Daytona, Talladega, etc) where half the drivers are running scared of the "big one". The shorter tracks have plenty of action and crashes are actually annoying because they interrupt the race.

I bet the legal-eagles are just laying in wait for this one.
-
If it happens, this could be... awesome.
Regarding the legal eagles, keep the following in mind:
Reno air races.
NASCAR.
Hometown Buffet on Senior Citizen Night.
If these vortexes of potential (and occasionally realized) mayhem can exist in our country, then rocket racing stands a chance, yes?
-
Reno Air Races, nor NASCAR, fly/drive over the crowd.
The Hometown Buffet on Senior Citizen night has been closed in many cities for many reasons. Primarily to protect the automobile driver from damaging his/her car due to the seniors doing body-throws into the grills as they depart the event, or something like that.

The Red Bull Air Races take place in very closed spaces and very close to the public. You should see the ones in Budapest... they passed under an 8-meter bridge and all the turns took place between the parliament and more than 800.000 people.

And I bet Budapest does not have to deal with the civil-ambulance-chasers (lawyers) we have to deal with in the U.S.
-
I hope it works, but I don't expect it to "take-off". hah! I'm punny.
-
We've seen the effects of aircraft fuel. :O

You had a Red Bull Air Race in Frisco last weekend...
