been flyin a cesna 157 and need to get a good headset and don't know a whole lot about them... don't wanna spend 600 bucks for the bose... anybody have any experience with any good brands... looking for something descent but not too expensive

David Clark. Expensive but worth it. Go to a shop and try them on first, and pay special attention to the various types of earcup seals. And try them on with your flying glasses or sunglasses on. Find a pair you like, then walk around the store for half an hour wearing them. If your head doesn't hurt after that, buy them without regard to price.
Seriously. Don't go cheap on your headset or you'll regret it.

are these descent ? ... only ones i have used are david clarks and they are wayyy too expensive for a new 1... i have 1 that is about 8 years old and getting worn out and ragged

All I know is that I bought a cheap headset when I was getting my PPL, and the USAF uses david clark. I had a chance to wear some USAF david clarks for a few hours, and 3 hours wearing the david clarks felt like 15 minutes wearing my original ones.
Second-rate gear has no place in an airplane IMHO. Don't ever buy a headset without trying them on and wearing them for at least 15-20 minutes. You're going to be wearing these things every second of every flight so they better be comfortable, and in an emergency your life could depend on your ability to communicate. How much are those 2 considerations worth to you?

My David Clark H10-13.4 is excellent all around.
Probably a good reason why you see these sets on just about every pilot's head...what is a C-157? (150 or 177 i'm guessing)

I love my David-Clark 10-40s. Might be old, maybe I got 'em on eBay, but solid as a rock and never had a problem.
A friend of mine got a super cheap 'Featherweight' set that he swears by, spent like $50-60 new for them.

I use David Clark H10-13.4's. The 13.4 is its weight...and they're quite comfortable. Some complain that they really clamp onto your head but I don't personally have that problem so I can't chalk that up to the 'con' category.
Pro's:
Lightweight
Durable
Affordable
Lots of support and know-how out there if something goes wrong (an event I have yet to experience)
Cons:
Not ANR (Active Noise Reduction) which requires an electrical power source such as a 9v or some AA batteries.

5 year warranty and for under 300 bucks. In a very unscientific survey of things I've noticed...these are by far the most common headset you see.
Here they are in action...even on a test flight I still find time to goof off :p

And on another note...where can I find a Bose for $600? I'm all over that and then it's all over ebay...cha ching!
The Bose X's are a pretty standard $995. My buddy is off at CRJ training for an airline so he offered me the use of his Flightcom Denali ANR's and I like them. They're also yellow :) But one thing about a 172, Mooney, Saratoga or 310...they're all noisy. They were noisy with the ANR. They were noisy with the my passive Dave Clarks. They're hell on eardrums with nothing.
Like Eagl said...DO NOT SKIMP on this area. As a matter of safety but as a matter of practicality. No reason to sacrifice your hearing for something as silly as saving $100 on a headset.
I just sold some H10-60's on ebay. They went for $250...there are deals to be had there but personally I buy new. If I was buying a flight helmet...New Gentex is the only way to go. Same goes with headsets and more importantly...underwear!

I had these in my PT-19 for about 12 years. No problems, worked well in a difficult open cockpit environment. I had them in cloth helmets so they didn't blow off when you leaned around the windscreens.
Pretty inexpensive, pretty comfortable, durable. If you're on a budget, take a look at them. They have DLX now too.. reasonable, look a bit better even.

btw look into a noise cancelling headset, spendy but I will never fly again without one.

You out of FXE, Scooter? Used to live in Lake Park and worked and flew out of Lantana and Wellington Aero Club. Got down to Boca, Executive and Pompano (who knew it was a fish? :) ) now and then. That place sure is a change of pace for a displaced Ohioan.

I am now based at VRB but years ago lived in Ft. Lauderdale and flew out of FXE and Pompano. If you get down to these parts let's hook up for lunch.
I am in the middle of my annual so I won't be flying for another week or so. I needed to send the MP/FP gauge out for OH but just the usual stuff along with 3 new tires this time (I hate changing the darn things). The goal is to shift this event to the cooler months and out of hurricane season.

I bought a new headset recently, reviewed all the options and eventually bought the obvious one. The David Clarke 13.4. I flew yesterday, thinking back I now realise that I put it on and forgot I was wearing it. That in itself tells me I made a good choice.
It's the bestseller for a very good reason.

Ohh okay you're right there with Piper. I'm not down there often but this winter am going to be making the move to a Jet FO for a charter outfit that finds itself at PBI, FXE and the bahamas often.
No idea when I start but I've gone through the meet and greets and am just waiting for a vacancy. Nobody's quittin! (a good sign)
Any rate...I'll be down in FL pretty frequently and am always looking for good lunches :)
You sending your stuff to Tiffin Aire? They've got a heck of a prop shop there.

I have been using Banyon out of FXE for my Prop work, I don’t know who my friend/AP IA sent the MP/FP unit out to.
I have been using the down time (waiting on parts) to organize the hanger (clean it up) as it has been raining a bunch this week it seemed like a good time to do it.

I have a set of Pilot brand PA-1779T DNC headsets and I love them. I have spent a lot of time in David Clarks, and those are good, but not as comfortable and more expensive.
The Pilot brand have active noise reduction, an internal rechargable battery (very convienient compared to others) and provide excellant audio.
If you shop around you should be able to get them for just under $400.

That headset seems pretty neat. Lots of features, although I can't help but wonder why the heck they needed a cellphone jack specifically for use in the intl space station... Good earcup seals will be critical as usual.

No complaints about the earcup seals here.
Have used them with radial engine airplanes, and flying the Piper Apache and the ANR makes quite a differance.

I use the jack to plug in my I-pod or CD player, I have the LightSpeed ANR headset and really like it.
