My dad.
The guy is basically a bazzillionaire.... but you'd never know it.
He would take one look at this forum, and with a swipe of his hand, rip it from its hinges... pull it clear out of the monitor, crumple it, and toss it right across the room with no forwarding address.
He'd then take in the scattered, lost denizens... and give them a loving home.
I've seen they guy under extreme.... extreme pressure... and have been completely blown away by his wisdom, humanity, virtue.... and its effect.
He was one of those guys that, while growing up in an era of divorces and abuse et al, he'd take in my screwed up friends and give them a place to sleep. One night in particular, I woke up, crept down to the staircase landing, and listened as he and my screwed up friend du jour talked. One of the most amazing conversations I've ever heard.
When my mom died... I was there, but I was useless. But what I saw..... if you're gonna go out, you could do far worse than having that guy beside ya while it happens. It was at that very moment when I first realized what being a "man" is.
I don't trust heroes so much. Mostly, they're hype. Afterall, they're normal people like the rest of us. How they deal on the screen or the rink doesn't tell us much about anything. And mostly, they wind up disspointing us.

Well said Nash.

go ben.
Reminds me of one of my favorite Ben Franklin quotes.
"When having intercourse with a large woman I find the quality to be equal to and often superior to that of thin ones.
And they are so much more grateful"
:lol

My father, while a good guy and had his moments where he shined.
Wasnt anyone I would consider to be anyones hero.
Lemme put it to you this way. I spend most of my life trying incorperate some of his positives into my life but mostly trying to to be a better man then he was.
MY heros growing up With the exeption of Both my grandfathers and John Wayne and the charactors he played. Were mostly dead guys I read about.
Patton, Teddy Roosevelt, Cheif Joseph, Benjamin Franklin.
Interstingly enough as I look at those names they all share one common thread.
They all faced and overcame adversity
And of Course I mustnt forget.

my father, my grandfathers and my father in law.

I will break tradition and say my Mom is my hero. She did a hell of a lot and acted the responsible adult to basically rear my sister and me when my Dad left for another woman. The fact that we stayed out of trouble while growing up says volumes to her influence and making sure we had a roof over our heads, clothes on our backs, and food on the table. Yeah, she did more than "good enough".

Yup. Not ashamed of it either. I seriously doubt you'd do even half the job she did under the same circumstances.
-
Oh, he's not insulting you.
He's just saying that it explains a lot. :rofl
Oh this is going to get edited. :D

subaru... I did raise a daughter as a single parent and by all appearances... at this point in time.... I did a really crappy job.

Wasn't meant as a slap at you. Not many I know of could of did what she did, especially under the circumstances.
Hell it's the very least to consider her a hero for what she did. It was real.
-
My heroes....
Richard Bong, Chesty Puller, Tommy Mcguire, Greg Boyington( tell my dad told me though he was a hero, he was a drunk, and not the best role model, funny comming from a guy who drank himself to death)
Never any moviestars or sports people.
John Wayne was close though!
-
wasn't really a slap at you or your mom...
I just feel that it is not a good idea for women to raise boys or even.... men to raise girls.
My son came out really well.... so far.
I spend a lot of time with my grand daughter but fortunately she spends more time with her grandmother.

In a perfect world, both parents should be there.
Since mine wasn't, I'd rather had her rear me than some foster parents.
I don't smoke, do drugs, or drink. Never got in trouble at school or anywhere else. I pay all my taxes.
Heck, you and she would probably get along. She likes to fish, shoot guns. She grew up in 30-50's Japan so you can imagine what a rebel she was. She'd ride her own motorcycle with her older brother and his friends.
-
My heroes have always been cowboys... and they still are it seems.
Not a Hank tune, but still appropriate.

Sounds like a great lady with a mind of her own. So I doubt she would put up with Laz's philosophy on how to view and treat women.
-
LOL.. with a Japanese upbringing she'd be a heluva lot better equipped to respect Laz's views and be a heluva lot better at manipulating him than any American raised woman.
BTW.. what's wrong with how Laz views and treats women, anyway?

Yanno. Damn good call!
Dont know why I hadnt thought of that.
While I didnt manage to stay out of trouble that was through no fault of hers. But she did easily go above and beyond the call of duty.
Damn good call indeed

I can imagine. Story go soemthing like this?
Old man splits for parts unknown. No income.
Donates blood for money twicea a week so as to put food on the table while She goes back to school to brush up on her steno and secretary skills.
Gets a mediocre job with mediocre pay but a decent healthcare plan.
Which came in handy when her son while pitching managed to catch a line drive baseball with his mouth.
dispite best efforts. Lack of child support causes mortgage company to forclose.
End up 3 people in a 1 bedroom apt. Herself, One little girl age 5, 1 Boy age 13.
Bills get paid. food ges put on the table. Good food too. the clothes on our backs may not have always been name brand but they were quality. Manages to find every bargain and sale to save even a few pennies at a time Even manages to scrimp and save put money away for a rainy day
I swear if my mother were put in charge of this countries finances she'd find a way to reduce the national dept to zero and have us showing a surplus inside 5 years
I wish I was one millionth as good with money as she is.
When I look back at it now I am awestruck. How the hell did she do it all on just her sole income without going into debt? Secretaries that work for the state just dont make that much. But she only after my sister moved out got a credit card. And then only so that she didnt have to carry cash on her.
Eventually she got paid back. The law caught up with the old man several years after I was married and gave him the option of paying the money back or going to jail.
He paid. But how the hell did she doing when it wasnt there?
Great Call Saburo

Treat'em as a more or less subspecies.... which in some of them inaccurately triggers an evolutionary instinct in seeing him as an alpha male. :D

My heros list is pretty long but I'll keep it short:
-Father
-Grandfather
-Wife
-Military personal
-WW2 veterans

Can't really think of anyone I'd put that label on, except maybe the woman I married. She took in a guy who was pretty screwed up back then and really helped me straighten my life out. It wasn't an easy trip, especially for her.
to Saburo and Dred's moms. They both sound like great ladies.
I can see it's tough to only have one parent. At least they were there for you. Mine were there physically but they were not there were it counted. They were far to wrapped up in their own petty little problems and ignored what was happening in their kids lives. My moms solution to every problem was to ignore it and hope it goes away. If that did not work it was off to the doctor for a pill. Dad never had the guts to stand up to her even when it was the right thing to do for his kids. After a while he just gave up. You could see it in his eyes.
When I married my wife her daughter was 9. I've really been the only father she's ever known. It's helped me because I've been able to do for her what my parents never did for me.
