Title: Ammo Counter
Post by: AutoPilot on October 12, 2005, 12:43:37 PM
they didnt have an ammo counter in the planes in WW2

so why do we?

is this game not modeled after WW2 aircraft?
and the simulation of that aircraft?

the 50 cals. in this game are way undermodeled

recently i was able too obtain a copy of the movie thunderbolt
a documentary on the 66th fighter squadron operating out of
Italy.

in that film it shows P-47s straffing a train, now train boilers mind your are at least 4 inches think steel plate, and from way out the 47 disables
the train with no problem.800 rounds a min. 106 rounds per sec.

but when you fly a 47 in AH modeled after WW2 47
it takes you forever too knock anything down

which brings up another ?

will we ever get the trains from AH-1 back?

if you were bored with 1 or 2 aspects of the game, you could always
go out lookin  for a train.

now we hear the train noise, but no train

the old train always had a flurry of ack coming from them
and if you didnt attack them the right way
you always ended up with serious damage.

I agree with this, but it is unlikely to change.  It has been brought up before.

The boilers on trains are not armor plate and are easily punctured, aided by the high pressure within them.  The explosion of the steam also hides any relative damage when comparing cannon to .50 cals.  Have you seen footage of a Typhoon or Mossie hiting a train with 20mm cannon?  No, you just prefer to think that the US Navy was smoking crack and the .50 cals were some sort of wonder weapon that magically exceeded the joules it could have produced in damage.

I would like to see trains return as well.  They seriously damaged me, or shot me down, on many low altitude missions when they arrived unexpectedly at the city or factory complex I was attacking.

4" thick boiler plate seems a bit high, thats a lot of steel. What kind of psi did those old trains run at anyway?

If I recall (correct me please?) it's a map-maker's option. It takes a lot of time to set them up, like truck convoys, and to set up the tracks everywhere, etc, so most maps don't have 'em since AH2. Guess if the current map has 'em that means that map-maker spent a lot of time going the extra mile.

Some WW2 planes did have ammo counter not the kinds we have but it pretty much told you how much ammo you had.

buhahah thats to funny :lol  try setting your convergence at 400 and shoot when the target is at 400 and they're jsut as good at 20mms. And 50cals. are API (Armor Piercing Incendiary) they dont explode like cannons do so if your hitting ground targets you have to hit them instead of getting close to it.

The problem with .50's is not that they are undermodeled.

It's that the planes themselves are undermodeled.  There are many control lines running throughout the plane.  Once these are modeled and given hitboxes, .50's will become a lot more powerful.

Hit any fighter with the 8 cal .50 and its shredded. When i fly P 47 i never saw any fighter surviving a full hit. How is that undermodelled?

Train is not only disabled when you blow the boiler, bending a rod, hitting a pressure line or the crew will disable the train as well.

Also the boilers are less than 4 inches AND they have their thickness for a matter. So if you weaken its structure it will get cracked from the inside pressure, no need to penetrate the boiler to break it. Just scratch it and it will loose the pressure.

Try straffing a town building with 12 inch dirt walls with cal .50 . I live in a ww2 aera building and i know the outer walls are thicker than 12  inch. The bullits will kill the windows but wont rip the building apart. Still you can kill ah2 town buildings with cal .50. So its not to weak.

 :lol

There are some things in games that will always be a step away from realism.

the trains are there and they do shoot back....they just only have 1 gun.....and it can be quite deadly at low altitude

I agree with this.  AH's damage model for aircraft is very simple; all parts work perfectly until they break off completely; there are no control lines to be severed; no drag is suffered from damage to the wing or stabs.  That said, I don't have any trouble downing aircraft with 6x.50 cals, but fleeting snap shots frequently leave the target uninjured.

Oh yeah, ammo counters should not exist for aircraft that didn't have them.

Was there a wish here?  Aside from trains at every strat, and some fields.......... Oh wait, nevermind.

Oh wait again, as Lusche points out.........  This thread is almost 5 years old.  So maybe then there was no train......

WHO BUMPED THIS?  GEEZ

Oh some noob that just registered..... I guess that makes some sense.

Better then starting a new thread I suppose.  Maybe even, dare I say, this stran character did a search!
