Looking for opinions on the P-47's in the game. I'm thinking of using one as my primary ride for the next couple of weeks or so (still learning the do's and don'ts of a majority of the plane set) and would like to hear what people think of the 47's. Pretty much want to know which one out of the four we have does it all well. I was flying the D-25 last night and was having pretty good luck with it.
Any tips, hints, or suggestions from the jugg community would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,:aok

D-25 is my all-around P-47 favorite.
Tons of ammo (as they all have)
Turns well ... turns real well with flaps (D-11 is the best turner)
Hmmm ... they are all very good ... I just feel more comfortable in the D-25 for all-round flyin/fightin'
YMMV

D11 is best for knife fiting, however it lacks in two areas:
1. Fuel--- short supply even with DT.
2. Views- Cage is somewhat restrictive in views.

If you want some succes with the P-47, get high and fast and DON'T turn alot, it'll loose speed very quickly (it's acceleration isn't that quick though)
I always found the D-30 very all-round, with some good armament and a strong engine (compared to D-11 and 25)
If you're looking for dogfights with the P-47, load few ammo, but I suggest you take all 8 guns, if you go for 6, you'd better fly the P-51
When in trouble, trow out a brick and fly in formation with it
-
D-11. If you're going to shoot someone down in a big, ugly fighter, you may as well be in the ugliest one of the bunch.

I am not going to totally disagree with ya Frank, but some of my best flights in a P-47 has been down in the weeds.
It will surprise most at how nimble it is when slow and flaps have been deployed. Stall handling is fantastic in that plane ... as far as I am concerned.
-
play with the ammo packages . . . note how weight or reduced weight affects performance. i did it offline and what the plane could do, which i thought impossible, surprised me.

so...
P-47N is now used as a bomber?
(PS it's a good "high-alt" bomber)
:)

Get with the 56th FG and tag along with the best jug pilots in the game. YUCCA and Nomde are on quite a bit, are great sticks and good guys to boot. And if you can catch Frenchy online ask him for some tips, but I don't know how often he flies.

Like most varients the P-47 is an amalgam as it evolves. My main ride has turned into the P-47N from the P-38s I did before, but for different reasons. I love the P-38, I still fly the **** out of her - but there were a few reasons I did the P-47N over the P-38
* I found myself flying longer sorties. The P-47N on 50 % fuel and a centerline drop tank will go over 40 minutes. If you max MP with 2400 rpm in a climb, it'll go past that.
* It hauls bellybutton in the cruise mode around 13K - 30k. And you don't need to firewall it - 2400 rpm and 40 " MP is enough for a good 330 - 340 cruise.
* I found myself planning the flights more with an entrance and exit strategy.
General rules still apply to all P-47s and 38s alike. Speed 300 + before you commit to an engagement. Fight in the vertical at all times, if not possible you can turn inside with 1 or 2 notches of flaps but do it with a nose down attitude - not level turns. Push that WEP in the zoom climb, kill it over top, and push WEP on the downhill till u bust 300 and turn it off. Don't lead as much as you think you need to. Convergence set to 450 is more then enough - even if the guy is D600, the bullets will still take his wing off. You got a lot of bullets in the air at a time, around 100 per second - cockpit shots are your best friend. Speed Speed Speed - careful not to mush into the ground when you are slow and high AOA. Surprise spit 5's whenever possible. Use flaps with Spit 9s to gain the advantage. Club LA's and Typhoons whenever the chance permits. When out of options, push the nose over and haul ass.

Thanks for all the input guys. I really do appreciate it. Time to go out and see if I can fight this beast effectively.
If not I'll go back to my FM2 and plod along low and slow over the airfields waiting for the fight to come to me:D

ok,
Turning - one of the most misunderstood properties of the jug. It doesn't really "turn" in term of degrees-per-sec but instead makes the enemy turn more by flying slower. This is the "geometry cheat" all good jug pilots use to knife fight and it makes "pull the stick to the belly" types go mad. Scissors will be your main defensive weapon.
You'll really have to sweat it out each fight in which you dont have the advantage - but that's the most fun!
Differences between D models are minor. Most significant in term of performance is the paddle blade prop on 25/40 that add ~400 fpm to climb and improved wep on the 40. The rest is mostly loadout selection and cosmetics.
The N is a slightly different beast but I have little experience with it. It felt actually worse than the Ds but it's faster and carries INSANE amount of fuel. For WEP in this plane it seems they replaced the water injection with espresso shots. It feels just wrong that on wep it makes 72" while mil power is only 55". Maybe one of the experts can confirm this.
edit: this is perhaps the only jug fast enough to make running away a viable option...

It's a dead heat between the P-47N and P-51D on the deck 366-367 mph for both. However, the P-47N will accelerate a bit faster (both at 50% gas).

Except the P47N only has a few minutes of WEP, I think the pony has about 2x the duration for WEP, and after that the jug is just that, a flying jug.

Same WEP duration for both: 5 minutes.

Wow,
I guess there always has to be someone who wants to ruin a good thread. I came on the board looking for advice and constructive opinions about one of the planes in the game, and now it looks like someone thinks I'm a dweeb for wanting to learn the in's and out's of the P-47. Obviously a troll by someone who has nothing better to do than stir up hate and discontent, but what the heck, it's my thread so I'll bite:aok
Why are all other planes besides the T-152 and 190's dweeb rides???
For everyone else that HAS posted positive comments relative to the subject, Thank You The input has helped. The few times I've flown the 47 the last couple of days has been allot of fun and I'm actually landing kills:D

I don't think that that was BatFink's intent.
He is a SpitFire boy ... so he flys all planes like a SpitFire except those two. Those of us that do fly the SpitFire (almost exclusivly) are called dweebs ... ergo ... all planes, with the exception of those two are dweeb planes.
Its just humor ... thats all.
-
Uh OK I'll take your word for it. Not a slam here but is he British because the humor is lost on me:confused:
-
Hornet,
Mechanic" AKA Batfink is a Brit. Yes he loves his Spits as do I. Class act by the way as well.
It was humor, so take it as humor.
Good luck in your Jugs.

D25/D40- Manuevarbility is the same IMO, D40 is better in verticle.. D40 is superior to d25 IMO.
P47N- Seems to retain E a smidge better than d40/d25. More engine so it's faster. Manueverability is maybe just a little worse than d5/d40 but not that much at all if it is. Amd netter roll rate IMO.
D11- Faster than D25/D40, turn rate is better. Only weakness is that it's not too good in vertical and it's a razorback.
Overall tip- You dont fly it like a spitfire.. You fly it like you would a mans plane. It's more work. Gotta know when to chop your throttle and dump flaps and how to cut angles to achieve a snapshot. I'd highly value gunnery if i were you i'd go offline increase my guns ammo load under areana settings find "planeammomulti" (or something like that) increase it to like 1000000000000000000 or something. Shoot hte drones. Dont keep comin from their 6. Try angle shots and all sorts of wierd stuff. ANd remember ya gotta show a little tail to get the advantage sometimes so dont be afraid :) Experiment.

Holly crap he is a Brit. I just looked at his location under his avatar. I honestly didn't know that when I posted.
Hope there are no hard feeling about my earlier posts. Brit humor is beyond me. My wife watches British comedy's and I just don't get it.
My bad:eek:

The Brits don't get it either, it's just that it beats old reruns of Seinfeld....

the d-11 used to be my prime ride .. great turner nice perfomance .. but needed serious fuel management ... Now the N model that thing just Rocks .. it does everything better then the other models ... you can jabo , hi alt escort , furball , anything ... now theres some tricks of the trade to get the best perfomance out of the N .... (for a small fee i'll have my mechanic talk to your mechanic)
on the deck in a N (http://www.onpoi.net/ah/pics/users/301_1128891511_roo47nvsweapon51.zip) ran outta wep then lost an aleron ... the flaps become useless at that point and really make it get wobbly . yes its a Flap grabbin ,throttle banging , Big Dogs Ride ...

Can't tell you how many guys have collided with me and i've lost parts but still remained flyable while they descended in pieces.
