Title: Salute To The U.S. Coast Guard
Post by: slimm50 on October 12, 2005, 02:48:08 PM
My mother's oldest brother was named Huey. When he went off to war in 1942 she was 11 years old. She idolized him, and she was his favorite little sister (of which he had four). Huey had joined the Coast Guard.

Eventually uncle Huey was assigned to the U.S.S. Leopold, a destroyer escort. The following link tells the story of her sinking, and the fate of her crew, of the uncle I never knew, of a little girl's "hero".

Read about it here. (http://www.uscg.mil/hq/g-cp/history/WEBCUTTERS/Leopold.html)

exerpt:  "We hadn't fired more than a few rounds," said Cleveland Parker, Chief Commissary Steward, the highest ranking man rescued, when another sub, lying in wait off our port quarter, threw a torpedo into us."

Saw a statistic from somewhere that said the Coast Guard is roughly the size of the NYC police force but covers all our coasts and more.

I'm not sure about now (that they are DHS) but back in '90 or so when we were DOT we were 1/2 the size of the NYPD.  And our slice of the annual DOT budget was doled out after the Federal Railroad Administration got their cut.

My Dad was in the USCG during WWII. He served in both the Atlantic and Pacific. He saw most of the major landings in the Pacific close up as a coxwain on a Higgins boat. Semper Paratus

so far as I know the only shameful act by the coast guard was a recent one.

They went armed and house to house to confiscate firearms from American citizens homes in La.

I don't think that I would get along with them if they tried that at my home.

anybody got a link on this? Found lotsa info on NG troops and local police doing illegal smash and grab on weapons legally held by home and property owners outta Katrina, but not one mention of the Coasties involved in this crime.

It's important to know... I've been sending rather scathing letters to the agencies responsible; but haven't sent one to the USCG. (did send one to the Homeland Security pinheads)

Watching it now. Pretty amazing. One crew member on a flight came in from Hawaii.

Hang... there is a good article in the new American Rifleman (don't even tell me you don't get that publication)...

The rifleman article is a compilation of a lot of articles who's sources are given.

The late news is that the NRA got a judge to stop the gun theft by the government and the guns are ordered to be returned to the legal owners.

Some really scary stuff happened there with the second and it was stopped... I really really really hope that the lawsuits are in the billions of $'s .

I used a different address for my NRA registration, Laz. I'll get the Rifleman when I have the mail from that address picked up and dropped of here.

And thanks for the heads up.
