Title: Setup for October 14
Post by: Oldman731 on October 13, 2005, 04:41:39 PM
BIG WEEK!

After the October 14, 1943 “Black Thursday”
mission, the Eighth Air Force flies missions
only within the limited range of its escort
fighters.  And so the fall passes, as the Americans
build up their bomber and fighter strength, and
as British and American engineers work on
extending the range of the escorts.  The
wretched flying weather of December and
January limits the number of missions that
can be flown.

And then, on February 19, 1944, the skies clear.

The Eighth Air Force flies on the next six
consecutive days.  Its target is the German
aircraft industry - which the Luftwaffe knows
it must defend at all costs.  Shining machines
filled with thousands of young men pierce the
frigid air over Europe, charging to a flaming
rendezvous in a battle for ownership of the
German skies.

Radar:  Tower 158400, Sector 343200
Field Ack:  low-level and puffy are both .25
Killshooter is off
Fuel burn rate is 1.0
Field capture:  5 troops (if we can figure out how to do this)
Down time:  three hours
500 pounder will drop a hanger

Notes:

Although the time setting is February, 1944, and thus
before the invasion, we have picked the Rhine map
for two reasons.  First, the Bigweek battles took place
over Europe, not over the Channel, as usually happens
with the Battle of Britain map.  Second, we thought
we would enable, and perhaps encourage, base capture,
to see how this plane set works in a base-capture
environment.

Let us know how it works out.

Rhine with base capture?? Oooh... That'll be interesting. I hope you will all post your AARs here, so that I might live vicariously through y'all.

Nice setup.  Jug-11 vs. A5 is a fun fight.

It can be, at that! I've got some film footage of a HTH room where it was P47 (I think D11 or d25) vs 190a5s. Good fun both ways.

LW planeset looks good...

USAAF... (Whistle blow!) P-38G is no longer used in ETO at that time, they were using P-38J at that time but SLOWLY being moved aside by new P-51B escort fighters

:)

replace P-38G with P-38J

If there's confirmation, I'll do it.  Remember this is late February, I think 8th still just had 20th and 55th flying 38s.

How's this? :)

8th AAF

...P-38s of the Eighth Air Force were rapidly phased out of service in favor of P-51 Mustangs--The 20th, 55th, and 364th Fighter Groups converted to P-51s during July 1944, and in September the 479th Fighter Group traded in its P-38Js for P-51Ds.

9th AAF

...The Ninth Air Force was assigned a tactical role (in contrast to the strategic role of the Eighth Air Force), and retained its P-38J/L fighters a bit longer. Its first Lightning group was the 474th, which flew its first combat mission on April 15, 1944. It was soon joined by the 367th and 370th Fighter Groups. However, in March of 1945 these two latter groups converted to P-47Ds and P-51Ds respectively. By V-E day the 474th was the only Fighter Group still operating P-38s.

Bf-110s too were replaced in 44 when P-51s and P-47s started covering the LIBERATORS and FORTRESSES for the first time (and at the same time obliterating the 110s lol).  US pilets said 110 was an easy target as a "meat on the table"

Heh.  Not enough.  That source puts the Js in July or September.  This is late February.

Let's keep looking!

Bill Gunston (not the best, but one source) says not until August '43 did the J come out. He doesn't say if that was when the J was unveiled, or when it actually got "out and about" to the pilots.

20th Fighter Group and 55th Fighter Group of the 8th AF both took P38Js into combat starting at the end of December 1943, so they would have been the ride for both during Bigweek.

364th FG took 38Js into combat with the 8th in early March 1944 after arriving in February 44.  479th also showed up later with 38Js

Only 55th and 20th during Bigweek however

Thats ganna be just great some dweeb comes over and levels a field then you have to fly 50mile just to fight.
Title: Setup for October 14
Post by: Krusty on October 13, 2005, 11:35:39 PM
Gives ya time to get alt :)

Besides, if some dweeb does that, do it right back!

I think OM set that because field capture is enabled, and it's a huge-arsed map, and the CT has few people in it.
Title: Setup for October 14
Post by: Larry on October 13, 2005, 11:57:03 PM
Rhines not a huge map its a normal CT size but bases are already 20-25miles apart. I wouls say but heavy bombers a few sectors back so if saomeone wants to bomb they can climb instead of divebombing. AND put some wind layers make it "realistic" instead of the laser bombing. If it were up to me then this is how it would be.

Ack: 20mins
Maned Ack: 15mins
Hangers/Dar/Fuel/Ammo:20-30mins
Town Buildings: 1 hour
Troops: 10  dont think you can get 5

3 hours it WAY to long for the CT. Primtime in the CT only last about 4hours it only takes one person to ruin the fight then everyone leaves. The further you have to fly in the CT the more it becomes the MA.

It's up.

Unhappily, I'll be gone for most of this weekend.  Fork, Slash and Sabre will look in from time to time, but please be sure to post any problems or comments here.

Note that I DID change the 38G to a J.  Guppy has the sources that back up IK3's initial observation.

Will pay attention to Truekill's most recent comments on settings, he may be right.  Post here.

Title: More changes
Post by: Oldman731 on October 14, 2005, 10:03:10 AM
I've kept the number of troops required to capture a base at whatever the default is....hope that is 10, it's what I put in the MOTD.

At Trukill's suggestion, reiterated by Sabre, I've put a west-to-east wind in starting at 14k (at 15 mph), changing at 20k (to 20 mph).

Remember that taking all the bases simply screws up the arena until someone comes by to reset it.  Use good judgment on the base capture thing.

hehe It's totally unresponsive now... stuck at 10% throttle without any use of the buttons.  Obviously something inside went wacky.  I haven't tried swapping it into a different USB port yet, but I'm guessing that after five years, the throttle finally gave up the ghost.

Post by: Mister Fork on October 17, 2005, 11:06:15 PM
welllllllllllllllllllllllllll ... if you must know

a. I disabled strategy
b. I did a country reset.  (Setup. ArenaSettings.Environment.Cou ntryReset)
c. I changed the ResetTotalFieldCnt to 1 from 5. *
d. I changed the ResetAirFieldCnt to 1 from 3. *

* - prevents accidental game reset if some knobb/newb decides to capture a off-map base or if the map is designed with less than those numbers.

What happens is that when a map is loaded, we should reset the country (as in b to avoid this issue).

It also fixes radar issues and base capture problems. :aok

Do we get a discount or rebate from a week of not being able to log on?

We are paying for nothing right?
