13 Secs ain't squat, I saw a 10 secs turbodiesel Ford truck. It poored big black smoke all the way to the finish line.

W123 & W124 (and newer too) Mercedes in here were usually used as taxi and engine was not so fast 2 liter or 2,4 liter diesel and, like old Diesels all, they weren't exactly good performers. Watching those Mercs running is like seeing a Checker or a London Cab beating Porsches...
Of course with new Diesels everything is possible but remember these cars are old 70's tech without much electronics and ancient diesel technology... Guess you'd have to know a bit about tuning old diesels before you can give props to those guys beating ___t out of their Diesels :)
-
Wasn't the French Peugeot 505, 504 whatever it was called, the fastest diesel of the 70s?

yup seen a 10 sec dodge diesel at spokane drag strip...he was runing nitro and when he hit it.sounded like explosions..it was the wierdest sound,,i thought the truck was blowing up..lol..allmost a grind sound.but it was kickin butt and taking names,,i bet it really ran about a 9 sec..it was bracket racing..they love to monkey with there times threw the night..most bracket racers cars can run a sec or more faster than they qualify. allways see them hitting there brakes tring not to break out..lol

No idea.
Found nice site with project pictures and power/torque charts. +400hp/+750Nm from 3 liter Diesel.

Agreed!
I've just ordered a new Audi A3 quattro in lava grey with the sport pack (17" wheels, lowered suspension etc) I tried two - one had the DSG gearbox - a real stonker! But - the 4wd quattro is not available with DSG :(
On paper, the petrol versions are much faster than the diesels. On the road, it's not that simple. Everyone ogles the "max power" figure in favour of the arguable more important (for normal driving) max torque.
In order to achieve the best acceleration figures, the testers will rev the engine to max power - some 6200rpm in the petrol model, and then release the clutch - I believe funked calls this a "clutch dump". At 6200rpm, there would be enormous torque at the flywheel. But the record breaking acceleration attempt would be assisted by another important factor - the kinetic energy stored up in the flywheel. Obviously diesels are at a disadvantage here, as at their max power of ~4000rpm, there would be much less kinetic energy stored in the flywheel immediately prior to the "clutch dump".
In the real world, folks don't do 6000rpm clutch dumps. Driving like that, it won't be long before something breaks...
So I'm sticking with diesel - the new engine offers 236ft lb torque from 1750rpm. I know there are more powerful cars around, but you're going to pay more - 1)capital cost; 2)fuel cost; 3)insurance; 4)insurance company mandated tracker device; 5)depreciation.

Well, since you guys brought it up, here's a video of my '97 F350 4x4 Dually Turbo Diesel flat bed work truck.

God I love my truck! If I don't do stupid stuff like above, and leave the switch chip in economy setting, I get ~ 17mpg.
Put the chip in Tow mode and the tranny in 4wheel low, and it will drag a 2 ton forklift sideways out of the mud, across the driveway, and out into the parking lot! :D
Then of course there is the occasional moment of ZEN on a random Friday night, when a little Vanilla Ice wanna be, rice driving, "Look at me I've got neon lights under my ride and a big stupid wing bolted to my trunk", makes the error of judgment that puts him on the passenger side of the truck at the stop light, with his windows rolled down!
:rofl

beet1e, i was making fun of all you german car lovers.
-
I'd love to buy an american van with a big turbodiesel.. The only prob is you need to pay the car twice. First in the shop, next in the repair.

I know! I was just seizing on the obvious truism in your post. :D And I'm not German. I think you meant "lovers of german cars", not "german car lovers". Hehe, not even MiniD can split hairs like that. Speaking of MiniD, I wonder if he knows what model designation my new car would have in the US. A150 maybe? I know you guys like big numbers, and multiply the Euro numbers by 50!
-
Maybe funniest thing...
That black "190E" with 425hp/760Nm is real econo car; less than 7 liters/100km in highway use.
That's more than 33 miles per gallon for Americans.

Ohh man diesels are so cool. here is my stupid funny diesel story. Me and my date where sitting at this traffic light that on loop 288. the particular thing is that it goes from 2 lanes to 1 about 1/4mile from the light. i was in the left lane and sum ricer with an old civic is on the right. He knows what im gunna do, i know what im gunna do. haha, but he was an idiot so he tride to take me. just for reference my dad has done abit to this thing, it is an 01 GMC2500hd with the alison. He has a chip in it, 5 inch exhaust, and a new intercooler. It will flat go.
Back to the story. the light turns green, i stomp on it and quickly get infront of him. then i just stay right infront of him the whole way splattering his windshield with little droplets of unburned diesel and choking his lil honda with exhaust. it was awsum. :aok

I used to do that in my 2001 Dodge with the full Banks kit installed. It was freekin fast. I got the kit to help tow better. I own a big 5th wheel.
On the way to my house there is a spot where the road narrows from 2 to 1 lane each way and there is a light that always seems to be red about a km down from it. I would be in the lane that continues and always some impatient idiot would pull up beside me in the lane that ends and try to beat me to the merge. It was great to look over and see the BMW or Esclade or whatever trying to catch up when I would jump off the light. Who would think a big diesel pickup truck could accelerate so fast.
Trouble is Dodge made crappy transmissions in those days and I fried the torque converter after about a year. The dealer put in a new one for free but my stompin days were over. It was pretty immature anyways.
