Title: Anyone here a doctor?
Post by: Sp4de on October 16, 2005, 12:13:13 PM
I have been sick for a month straight.. :(
They dont know whats wrong with me. I have had 4 doctors look at me and they give me pills and pills and pills and blood drawn.
I am 17 years old, very healthy, Im not over weight and the last time I went to the doctor sick was febuary 2003.
I feel like my tonsils are stuck together in the back of my mouth and my glands are swollen. Strep throat right? nope. taken 2 doses of pills for that... so then my ear started hurting along with that.
"Ok Kyle you have mono maybe, take these pills" yay.. pills pills pills nothing is working.. Anyone know whats wrong?

I'm no doctor but I am an expert on "strep". Got it every year I was in school like clockwork around this time of year.

Good old fashioned Penicillin always did the trick for me.
Usually took about a week to recover.

Most known antibiotics have lost effect on present strains. People will get fatally ill more often in the future, not only because of bird flu.

Mono is usually first wrongly diagnosed as tonsilitis, that's what happened to me. Have you had a fever? What did they draw blood for ? Do you have the results ?

There's no way to treat mono but it's important to know that you have it because it causes your spleen and liver to swell, and rough activity can cause you to have a ruptured spleen or liver. That would result in critical rapid bleeding internally.

And I'm curious, were you bottle fed?

I have a fever, the blood was drawn for some mono test. no results yet.
What do you mean "Were you bottle fed"... Like as a baby? or are you being sarcastic?

Mono makes the WORST looking throats, much worse than strep. There isnt a medicine for it, though cortisone type steroids can help shrink the tonsils if they're so big that the the airway's getting squeezed. Time will heal mono.

Strep pyogenes, teh strain that causes strep throat, is essentially fully sensitive to penicillin in the US. Strep pneumoniae, which can cause pneumonia, ear infections, sinusitis -- is getting pretty resisitant.

Depending on...ummm....intimate practices, throat infections can be caused by gonorrhea or chlamydia.

Other causes for sore throat include viral infections (should be over in a week), sinus infections (irritation from drainage), trauma, smoking, and acid reflux. Rarely, lymphoma can show up as a sore throat.

My bet would be on mono with info provided.

Could consider either bloodletting (using leeeches ONLY -- this isnt the dark ages!) ; if further tests were needed consider consulting a professional for interpretation of chicken entrail augery.

Sound like you need your tonsils remove, Spade or should I call you Kyle?

I had my tonsils remove when I was 4-5 years old......

Anyway, I hope you get to feel better.

But a lot of the older Generations have had their tonsils removed when they didn't need to be removed.

Hang in there kid.. try and take it easy, don't aggravate the condition and communicate strongly with your doctor regarding treatment.

THAT means speak the hell up and ask LOTS of questions. The minute the doc starts treating you like a kid or talking down to you, with all the determinination you can muster explain to him that you feel like crap, the treatments don't work and that you have a right to know what the possibilities are, what the treatment is, what tests they are running and what you, the paitient can do to improve the situation.

Knowledge is power.. and when your sick, that's no exception. You can't fight if you don't know what the enemy is. Demand to know what they know about your condition ASAP. Have him write down or spell for you the mumbo jumbo stattaco of technical terms so you can research for yourself what it all means. Get your parent()s on the team and on track with you.

Medical Practice these days is becoming a guessing game with the medical staff.. don't put up with it. If they don't wanna tell yah what they are doing, you don't want the 'treatment' from those folks.

Unfortunately most folks sit on the examining table like sheep waiting for slaughter and take the utterences of some poindexter that's doing a 9 to 5 shift as the gospel of god.

Kick ass. Get well.

And good luck!

Do you get a funny tingling sensation when they insert the tongue depressor?  :O

If not then I'd say it's yer tonsils....

Need to order CBC, Chem 7, C-spine, start IV with D5W, check OS for FBO, rule out possible MI or UTI, call OR and set up for emergent nephrectomy STAT!

Too many nights watching ER with my wife when I could've been playing AH.......
