Could this be the new ewe for Shrek?
20 October 2005
By NATHAN BURDON
Out of the depths of the Otapiri Gorge has come another sheepish media darling hell bent on experiencing the dazzle of stardom through its wool-blind eyes.
And now that Shrek, the meandering merino, has finally settled down after his 15 minutes of fame, perhaps he might be looking for a partner to cosy up with in the far corner of the home paddock.
If he's looking, we've found her – at Limehills School.
Twelve-year-old Katie McLeod's brother and cousin captured the scourge of the Gorge during the school holidays after it had travelled the wilds of Central Southland for five years without feeling the hot steel of the shearer's handpiece.
Scorned for its user-unfriendly looks, the roaming romney could not find a master willing to claim it and it had to settle instead for a copse of trees on a nearby farm where it successfully evaded a series of attempts to foil its freedom.
Predictably, the woolly wanderer had been dubbed Princess Fiona and her capture was more rescue than sheepnapping.
The trees she was living in were set to be cut down and the decision was made to find Fiona a more fitting home.
She now occupies a spacious paddock behind the Limehills School and has been introduced to the school's flock – which principal Malcolm Walker proudly reports produced a 177 per cent lambing return this year – with varying levels of success.
The Princess will be taking pride of place at the school's pet day on November 7 when it is hoped record-breaking shearer Darin Forde will be able to free her of her woolly weight in time for summer.
Then maybe something can be done about setting up a date with Shrek.
But, then again, celebrity relationships so rarely last.

A farmer (frmr FDB) went to go see a doctor because he thought he had an STD.
Turns out he was just alergic to wool.....

TRADITIONAL SPICED MUTTON
Ingredients :
Mutton joint (leg or shoulder)
ground black pepper
powdered thyme
ground mace
fine oatmeal
mutton dripping (or other fat)
cabbage
cider
Bone the joint, rub it well with black pepper, a little powdered thyme, a pinch of mace and fine oatmeal - do not use salt. Wrap the whole in cabbage leaves, and cover in foil (traditionally the meat would have been thickly covered in mutton fat). Roast very slowly, allowing 20 minutes/lb of meat. Baste well at least twice during cooking and when basted add a cupful of cider to the fat in the pan. It can be eaten either hot or cold.
