Super secret recon, bombers, and fighters from USA and USSR now showing in History Channel:)
-
i wish we had nuclear powered jet planes:p
-
I don't think the narrator said "Neptune" enough...
-
UK and Canada produced some of the best bombers and fighter/inteceptors... the TSR-2 and Arrow
cancelation of the Arrow is close to murder. :furious
(http://www.parrysound.com/albums/albums/tagboard/AvroArrow.jpg)
This plane's no dogfighter, look at the airframe;)
-
the arrow lives on, it's now called the mig25.
-
heh, not quite john9001.
Foxbat is a different breed all together.
The Arrow was quite remarkable for its time (and way ahead of its time).
Worst decision in Canadian Aviation history was the cancellation of this bird. Second worse decision was cutting them up for scrap.:(

Here you go.

That's what I was thinking... looks a lot like a MiG 25.
-
Yeah, if you don't have eyes, it sorta looks like the Mig 25.
-
Here you go.
I don't see any real similarities, but it's a cool pic anyway

The arrow in that shot there looks like a F4 Phantom fuselage and a F106 Delta Dart wing. Rather old school I'd imagine.
-
Yep, remember this was 1957, 1958 though.

Without looking at another pic for comparison, I thought the nose, canopy, and intakes were similar.
But... upon further review... it's not so much.

kind of... The Arrow is the most sophisticated interceptor every built in the 50s-60s era, but MiG-25 is easier and cheaper to produce because its made of iron.

They were cut up for scrap in order to hide the fact that they were completely incapable of matching the performance claims.
-
Meh... I'd take this baby over the Arrow any day:
"Climb to 50,000 ft: 2.2mins"

Furious is a little confused.

Throw some swing wings on it and it doesn't look all that much different from this beauty!

I hadn't heard of the VTOL 104 until this program.
I would have liked too seen it developed.

I was surprised how small the U2 was the first time I stood by one. I got the impression they had a much larger wingspan based on how high they few. Neat plane.

The starfighter was the starting point of the U2 for Kelly Johnson and the Skunk Works. They modified the hell out of the 104 and came up with the U2.
The 104 looks like a toy when sitting next to a Phantom. It's maybe a quarter the size of the F4.

Yup, that's a nice one. I also like the look of the B1 also.
-
its when you see an aircraft the size of a Vulcan pulling vert after takeoff, doing fighter type aerobatics that you really appreciate it ;)

The Starfighters a pretty crappy fighter compared to the SR53. Politics about the Starfighter killed the SR53 project.

SR 53
Maximum speed: M2.0 at 35,000 ft
Climb to 50,000 ft: 2.2mins
Weight empty: 7,400lbs
turbojet thrust 1,640lb
rocket thrust 8,000lbs
2 Firestreak missiles
First Flight 1957
F-104
Max Speed: M2.2 at 35,000 ft.
Climb Rate: 50,000 feet per minute
Weight empty: 14,082 lbs
turbojet thrust: 14,000 to 18,000 lbs
M-61 Vulcan 20mm cannon
4,000 lbs of bombs under the wings
2 Sidewinders
First flight 1954
Faster, better climb, more armament, more thrust, already operational...
To me it seems obvious why they killed a slower, less capable aircraft for one already proven and in service.
-
here is something they neglected to mention on the program: U2s can, and were, launched and recovered on aircraft carriers

U2 aboard the USS America in 1969

I never saw anything attractive about the Vulcan bomber. Its like a fat delta wing.

Those aren't the spec's I saw, you comparing the first version of the F-104 with the SR53?
-
I have a soft spot for this incredible bird. I just do not think there is a better or meaner looking jet around.

Total agreement on the Sr-71. Anyone who has had the priviledge of seeing one in flight would feel the same.
-
The Avro Vulcan will soon be in the air once more. The National Lottery has provided funding at last.
"Avro Vulcan XH558 was bought on February 28th 2005 for the benefit of the Nation, by the Vulcan to the Sky Trust to be restored, flown for 10-15 years and then retired to the Imperial War Museum, Duxford, as the finest example of her type."
Looking forward to being deafened by those RRs again. I remember the terror mixed with excitement at hearing one of those things at RAF Finningley as a kid.
As for the SR-71, it's just a camera with a remarkably high speed shutter. ;)All mouth and no trousers. The Vulcan could at least kill a few million people with its nukes.

So could this, and it was better looking.
