I think in real life, the distance was always the same? (within V-formation of 3 bombers)

I think he is saying when intercepting, if you fly between the bomber drones they seperate a little from the lead bomber then reform.

Hmm Im not sure, especially the heavies (the ones who have the drones) stayed in tight formation even when attacked

Remember, the pilot didn't see the attack coming 9 out of 10 times and would still stay in formation

Maybe if it's getting hit, the pilot would get surprised and rocked the wings a little

I believe when information the bombers like B-17s, B-24s would be in a loose box formation and when fighters where comming they form in real tight so they could have a consintrated fire power on a 109 or 190 comming in to kill the formation. This helped with more guns and more liklies that the enemy 109 or 190 would be shot down or damaged or the 3 bomber box team would be safe. I think thats before the long escorts came along. Thats my opinion on what i think i saw somewhere.

I'm quite sure they tried to be as tight as possible the whole time though (is there even such thing as a 'loose box formation'?
