Today I ordered my first handgun!
HK USP 45 fullsize.
-
It looks plastic….nothing feels better than a cold metal in hands.
-
Great choice. I own one just like that and wouldnt trade it for anything.
After you shoot it a bit you'll never really want to shoot anything else. I like shooting other stuff but when asked whats my favorite to shoot, it will always be my .45 USP.
Damn I'm glad there are some HK fans around these parts.
**quick edit**
At some point pick up one of those Hogue slip on grips.

I have the same one. Mine is from 1996. Buy a Hogue Handall grip for it. Other than that addition, my USP is bone stock.
You get 12 rounds mags with it or 10?
Karaya
PS - Good choice

Congrats, but you shall now forever be known as a "gun nut". With this goes the believe that you chew tobacco, drive a truck, wear old T-shirts and kill innocent animals with large weapons.
:D

Damn Dago you just described me to the "t". I do chew on occassion but my addiction is cigarettes. I do drive a Dodge Ram 4X4 quad cab. I shoot deer with my 12ga slug gun. I do wear ratty old Tshirts and ball caps. But, I do not listen to country music.
Nice weapon Grun. I myself like the Kimber .45's but HK's are very good weapons.

I shoot Elk with my 470h+h from 500 yds....
neener neener neener....
mind you I have the freaking bruises to prove it :(

Gotta agree with the Hogue slip-on...made a huge difference in my USP 40.
-
Bodhi.
Ohio is a slug gun only state for deer. Its to populated and to flat in the NE and NW part of the state. Down in southern Ohio its all hills. That make any sense?
The longest shot to date on any whitetail I have taken is about 80 to 85 yards. Broke the bucks neck with one shot.

What county are you hunting in down yonder way? I took a nice doe yesterday less than 5 minutes from my house (Franklin County) after spending about 10 minutes in my stand.
When gun season comes around we go out to the club in Jefferson Co. (Steubenville area) and I spend the week there. 3 Statewide tags and 4 more urban tags to go :) mmm...venison tenderloin...mmm...jerky...mm m...steaks...mmm...more tenderloin.
One area we hunt is an old strip mine (miles of open ground) and a .50 caliber sabot does wonders at 200 yds.

I'm jealous. :)

Nice, congrats.
Now I will get to shoot one lol!;)

Grun - Hasn't it been left OFF safety for the pic? tut tut!
Looks similar to the Kimber that Lazs let me try, except that Lazs's had an additional "palm grip" safety on the back of the grip.
I cut my finger on those damn slider serrations.

the HK is a great gun...
I just don't have any use for one.
Don't take that wrong. I like revolvers.. I like 44 mag revolvers and 12 oz 357 revolvers that will fit in a front pocket and not be any worse than a cell phone..
I like Kimber or colt clones that are accurate.
Why? the revolvers do it all and I can load anything I want into em and they don't throw my brass away... when I shoot a 45 is is for... fun at short range... I want one that is solid with a 2 lb trigger pull and feels like metal... that adds to the fun. No other reason. the HK will do everything my kimber will do as well, allmost as well, or better.
The things it does better.... I don't need. I have better handguns and shotguns and rifles for that.
I am sure that a lot of it has to do with me being old fashioned and growing up with different types of firearms.
If the only gun I could carry would be one holstered pistol... I might feel differently.. that is as fair as I can get on the subject.
and even then... I wouldn't feel too bad with a single action revolver in 44 mag.

It gets delivered Friday and then the 10 day witi ng period begins... :)

But Lazs, you forgot the one thing the auto-chucker has that the revolver doesnt.
You get to act all cool when you rack the slide and put a round in the chamber. Kinda like the pump shotgun effect. I just love it when they do that in movies. I keep wondering where the shell went from the last time they did that though. Eh, what do I know. Must be a special bullet recycler, eh? :)
-
Nice gun take it out to the range and pop off 200 rounds. If you have never really practice with a pistol before do some looking around and make sure your grip and body are correct from day 1. Also you can prac this at home with dry firing drills before you go out to the range. My friend has a hk usp and its a great gun. Its just to bad that you didnt get a glock our a 1911 so you could buy a carbine kit for $250 and have some major fun.

Only 1 more month til I can buy one...
Only 5 more til I can afford one...

Are you allowed to have B.A.R.s still? That's home protection and then some. Can't wait for the day I can get a "real" gun of my own. When people ask why I need a gun I tell them it's life insurance and home protection.

Sure, the current Browning Hunting rifle. BTW, rifles should not be used for Home Protection. You'll be in jail when the bullet goes through the walls and brick (I've seen crime scene evidence of it) and kills someone (aside from the perp.)

Ah yes, well then i'll need something to protect the home with too. When I come of age of course.

Nothing beats a shotgun for home defense. Nothing.

Springfield Armory M1A?
Just got one of the loaded standard M1As myself this week. It's a beauty of a rifle.

You're right, what was I thinking. The 1911 is twice the gun the Glock is.
a decent quality one costs twice as much as a Glock...
weighs twice as much...
rusts twice as fast...oh wait - the Glock won't rust!
takes twice as much gunsmithing to make it reliable...
Don't get me wrong - I like the 1911 .45 ACP, but for a gun to carry, use for home defense, etc., the GLock fills the bill for me. For CCW, the weight and reliability are a big factor, as well as the rust resistance (In AZ one tends to sweat a lot when carrying a CCW).
For hunting, etc. a Glock can get bumped around a lot and still not worry about chipping stocks, rusting, nicking the finish, etc. For me it's just a good, all purpose knock-around type of gun.
In my gun cabinet are various makes of revolvers, as well as SIG, Beretta, Taurus, S&W , Springfield and Walther automatics. The Glock is the one that I choose to carry for all the reasons above.
-
Yep, Pre-Ban Springfield Armory M1A with TRW parts and National Match Sights.
Send me a pm if you have any quesitons or want some suggestions about the weapon. Lots to learn if you havent dealt with one before.
But, shooting it is a blast.
Things to know: all magazines are not created equal, know which ones to buy.
Surplus ammo is great stuff if you get the right stuff, but others, like Indian manufactured is dangerous to your weapon and your health.
Cleaning is an art to do it right, but not really hard.
I could go on.

My USP arrived at the gun store yesterday. I did the paperwork and the 10 day waiting period has started. :)

Blued steel and walnut are the choice of firearm conneisseurs.
Plastic guns are for techno-nerds. ;)

GRUN, get a Hogue Handall. When you bring it home, throw the grip in the Microwave for about 45 seconds (till it gets warm). It will be easier to get on.

went to the range yesterday and shot a 60's "sporterized" 98k mauser... probly sold for $50 back then... and an M1 Garand and.... for a handgun...
I have about a dozen to choose from but I allways seem to gravitate to my little Ruger Redhawk that I had cut down to 4" and bobbed off the hammer spur and with eagle elk horn grips.. the thing was shooting sub 2" groups at 25 yards and 4-5" groups at 50 yards and all of em on the paper at 100 yards with a load that was doing about 1250 fps with a 255 grain semi wadcutter... this is about a half a ton of energy in a fairly compact and smooth gun. It never lets me down.
like I said... for a 45.. I do like to shoot the Kimber but... It is about a step up from a 22 for me. Not very good at breaking stuff or hitting anything at a distance.
I still like shotguns with #4 buck for zombies tho.

lazs do you guy have an outdoor range there?
-
yes we do. It has trap and 25, 50 and 100 yard ranges. I go there to test new guns and loads and go out to my brothers place to shoot for fun.
it is getting harder and harder to find a place near to shoot in kalifornia.. I gotta get out of here.
lazs
-
What's it like shooting outside? Ive only shoot at the indoor ranges here. What are the important differences to be aware of?
-
well gee...seriously? the obvious.. or maybe not so obvious things like.. sun glare.. that fancy red sight doesn't look so red or... it disapears when you aim a something in some brown weeds say....
wind... it can be stiff here. Just as you pull the trigger it gusts or... stops.. brass flying around without walls. overcast... rain...
All cool stuff. Indoor ranges are not for me much.
If we can get our schedules together come on out.
lazs
-
Sounds fun. :) I might have some days off early thanksgiving week, or evan have that whole week off. How does that sound?
-

wind makes a big dif on your shots at long ranges..outdoor shooting ranges are great...they make you see how far 500 yards really is..some people brag about hitting deer with iron sites at 700 or 800 yards on the run..and i just about laugh...cause at my range there is a 500 yard 55 gallon bucket target..you can hardly see it from that far..lol...with my 30.40 krag i was able to hit it with my iron sites holding it about a inch above the target..i was thinkin to my self,,i couldnt imagine taking a 800 yard shot with iron sites..lol...pure luck past 500 i would say to hit anything the size of a 55 gallon drum.. a 55 gallon drum at 500 yards looks about the size of a pea with your eyes..its fun to see if you can even hit it....but anything farther than 500 you really need a scope...but as for me,,i dont need to shoot that far..500 yards is just fine..lol
best thing about outdoor ranges..there fun for high power rifles that you cant shoot at indoor ranges..plus they got the cool cowboy shoot outs and stuff like that:)..the range i go to..they got the old west town set up..looks right out of the old west...i wouldnt mind tring that somtime
-
Fired a WW2 M1 the other day.
I'd like to have one ;)
-
yep.. they have those cowboy shoots at the range I belong to also.. My fee is $40 a year and it costs me a buck any time I use the range.
angus... I just just finished at the loading bench and reloaded about 300 rounds for my M1 Garand. fun gun to shoot.

What are you loading for that Garand? I have about run out of the 1968 Lake City match stuff I have been shooting, and I need to start reloading for that one. Ball powder or IMR? Type and charge? Bullet info? Results? (no, forget the results part, you can only shoot at 100 yards, not 300)
-
IMR 4895... 147, 150 and 165 grain boat tails.
I only shoot at 100 at the range... out in the open plinking I shoot up to about 500 yards... as expected, the 165's seem to do about the best.
ought six stuff is drying up and commercial ought six has the wrong types of powder in it... I can load 1000 rounds for about $200 maybe a little less depending on bulk of components... I am just starting reloading for the garand tho so haven't really tried to do much better than that.

Range.

Outdoor range is always preferable to me. Sound isnt contained as much, air tends to remain clearer, and there is always the hope some small animal or bird will happen into the area between the weapon and the target. :)

Nope, I'm gonna wait till next week. I know I could ask to fire it during the 10 day period but I'll wait. Plus I got more mags coming in to make it more fun.
-
Cool.
It will be interesting to compare it to my Sig:D
-
Be gentle with your magazines, Grunherz. The USP .45's mags are pretty heavy and bulky as far as pistol mags are concerned. If you eject them and just let them fall to the ground, they WILL break if they hit a hard surface like concrete . That's about the only failing of the USP, aside from its being rather bulky as a carry weapon.
