AKDejaVu : Thanks for the kind offer . It came Friday .
This game is awsome . Last time I only played the demo in software mode on my 333 . Now with new pc and the beta D3D patch , wheel and pedals (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
I liked Nascar 4 too , but really love this . I was 13 in 67 , hehe , man I am getting old . Only thing I havn't yet turned on is the damage (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) I can make it all the way around though (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) at WG
I hold a line easier in this sim than Nascar , why don't know . Most likly don't know how to drive the N4 that well .

Hey Guys,
Just thought I would punt this back up to the top while I waited for 1.07 to download (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)
I just bought GPL (Bargain Bucket purchase £4.99).
It's version 1.0 and seems to have a lot of bugs (CTD, dissapearing fences, Losing Joystick callibration, Yes I know go buy a wheel, (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) plus a very flaky interface generally). Having said that I love it, even if it does seem a bit like driving on glass beads in comparision to Toca 2 etc. Those 4 wheel drifts are very satisfying when you get them right.
Anyway question time...
A quick look at the fan sites etc shows a shed load of patches, version updates utilities etc. Can anyone give me a list of the "must have" updates etc and any I should steer well clear of.
Also I can only get a maximum resolution of 640x480 but I am sure I've seen at least 800x600 elsewhere. Is it a limitation of V1.0 or should I look more closely at my video settings?
Thanks in advance

You need:
The 1.2 patch
The D3D patch (which will give you higher resolution)
You will also need:
Lots of patience. This sim is a lot harder to learn than AH/WB.
(Note..most the N4 setups are setup for ovals, meaning that when driving straight you need to turn the wheel to one side a tad)

Thanks for the quick reply Daff,
I'll get those patches tonight and give em a try. You are right about the patience. I can get around on my own OK but put other cars on the track and I'm history. (Nothing a hispano patch wouldn't cure though) (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

I've usually considered myself a flight sim guy but last winter I started to burn out on them. After trying various products I "discovered" GPL a couple of months ago.
If the true measure of a simulation is in how good it suspends reality then this software is, and this will sound like blasphemy to flight simmers, one of the best I've come across. I get the sensation of controlling an actual vehicle. I'm not staring at a CRT, pumping plastic foot pedals anymore; I'm at Rouen, France fighting to control 400 angry horses as I squeal around the Six Freres corner.
The first time I attempted to outbrake an opponent heading into the first turn at Mexico City, I had an insight into the drivers of 30+ years ago, they were frigging nuts!
In the end the real test of any sim is how it affects you in real life. Now when I drive my "real" car into a corner I have to fight the urge to pitch the nose in pre-apex and do a powered four wheel drift through the turn. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/cool.gif)

Oh my GOD!!!
We actually have some racers here! Used to play GPL a bit during my AW burnout phase. Now during my AH burnout phase, a squaddie got me to buy Nascar 4. Joined a league with him and got 2nd last Wednesday.
The one thing I didnt like about GPL was that since I wasnt all that good, I felt bad running is races with those who I didnt know. Now that theres some AH'ers in GPL, maybe I will reload that!

Do you play GPL with a joystick or a wheel? I've tried a few driving games with a stick, and it just doesn't work for me. I'll have to buy a wheel eventually. What is a good one?
-
Still struggling with GPL using a stick (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif) A very sick pet cat used up my Wheel money (And much more) this month so It will be another month before I can afford a wheel. I also would be interested in some suggestions FFB, is it worth it etc.

Oh.... I downloaded the "eracer" demo the other day 102mb (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/eek.gif) Its physics has more in common with "Ridge Racer on the Playstation" than any serious driving sim but the graphics OMG it is friggin beautiful. Now... if Sierra would bring out a GPL II and let Rage do the graphics.....

There was an AirWarrior group that raced every week about a year ago. We had a ton of fun but burnout seems to happen very quick in GPL. If any of you ex-AW'ers still want to race, post a message, lets do it!

i race with GROWl http://www.siliconchisel.com/dok/index.php (http://www.siliconchisel.com/dok/index.php)
It's a GPL league of pilots from AH & WB, we race once a week for a "season' of 11 or 12 races. I guess because we race each other every week the races tend to more civil.
Some of us are fast, most not so, new drivers are wellcome
There is also a web sight (VROC) to link to other races. I don't have a link for the NASCAR4 online races.
It's best to use a wheel & pedel setup, i have a logitech, but there are other good ones.

Welp, looks like its a no go with GPL for me. Cant get the D3D patch to work. Here are my system specs:
P3 550MHz
128MB RAM
Elsa Erazor X2 (Geforce 2 32MB VRam)
after following D3D installation instructions, I exit and restart and end up back at the desktop. Ideas?

This sounds like a lot of fun. I've just ordered GPL. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
The thing is, I'm in the UK and 10 PM EDT is 3AM at the moment. Which would be impossible.
Are any leagues set-up with abit more accpetable time?
Cheers. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

This GROWL league is a blast! We've had about six races so far, and the skill level is growing. Lots of intense, racing action that is just as much fun as furballing. I really recommend that you give it a try. We currently have about 15 regulars that race every Saturday night.

banana - do you have a steering wheel, and if so what make?

Hi All,
Finally got around to downloading the V1.2 patch and the D3D patch. WOW! It looks stunning running at 1280*1024. I'm still struggling with a stick instead of a wheel but I am getting there.
Anyone willing to post some times for the different circuits? I'm not going to embarrise myself by posting mine here just yet but it would be cool to know just how far off I am. What setting do you all use online. (Damage model, realism settings etc). I assume throttle & braking assist is for dweebs. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

I've been playing this sim for a couple of months now and these are some of my times:
Rouen - 2:03.xx
Kylami - 1:23.xx
Mosport - 1:23.xx
Mexico - 1:53.xx
Watkins Glen - 1:07.xx
Monaco - 1:32.xx
Monza - 1:31.xx
Zandvoort - 1:30.xx
Most of these times are five or more seconds off the mark.
This sim has a steep learning curve for me! (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/eek.gif)

Dowding, I use a Logitech Wingman Formula Force GP wheel & pedals(USB). The force feedback in GPL is awesome!
-
Wow Blur,
I'm generally about 8 seconds outside you times at the moment (Assuming I can hook up a clean lap). Apart from Monaco where I'm nearer 20 seconds slower (God I hate thet track - Very pretty but evil). Still using a stick so I would hope to shave a few seconds off when I get a wheel. I'm still undecided on which wheel, I have the boss's permission, but a budget Force Feedback or decent non FFB is my only option. The more I hear about FFB in GPL the more I think I need the FFB one.

Heh - just installed GPL.
It's pretty difficult, even with my X-36 combo. ;)
I can barely complete a lap, nevermind actually be competitive.
Snafu - I have same dilemma. Not sure what to do yet.

Ok dammit....how much does GPL cost? I might just have to go out and get the damn thing now. I have NASCAR 4 but havent raced it online yet.

Heh Grizz, I wish it WOULD change. It'd make life a lot easier. Or maybe I'll just move to the States? ;)
I've found some UK based leagues, but they seem very, very, very serious. I read on one forum that someone had cancelled a first wedding anniversary celebration just to race.
But maybe I'll try to join the GROWL league after I've practised some.

Dowding, check UKGPL.
With 5 Divisions (maybe more for the next season), there's room for all kind of abilities....and I havent heard about anyone cancelling a wedding :).

One question - I've got the 1.2 patch and the D3D patch. When I put it to 1280x1024, it still appears a bit 'letter-boxed' - is this normal?

I'm currently using a Microsoft Sidewinder Wheel (non-FF). It's a solid little unit and I've had no problems with it.
I made a few discoveries about GPL that may help newbies. First off the racing "groove" is not necessarily the racing "line". In other words if you're going into a fast corner and you try to follow the groove like you're on rails, you're going to go flying off the track! You've probably discovered this by now. You want to angle into the corner with enough speed to get constant tire squeal. You'll find that if you take the right line through the corner that your "loaded" tires (e.g. right side in a left-hand turn) will more than likely be on the groove but the car will not be parallel with it. I'm sure this sounds like nursery school stuff to old hands but my times improved rapidly once I realized this simple fact.
I learned one other thing about cornering at the S-curves at Mexico. Power-on induces understeer while lifting-off and/or braking induces oversteer. Going through the curves it was lift-off, slide right, power-on, lift-off, slide left, power-on.
Don't try to drive this sim like you do the family car. It's actually much closer to snow skiing. ;)
-
Dowding, yes it's normal..personally, I dont like anything bigger than 1024, as it gets very hard to read the chat above that. (And then it becomes even more distracting!).
Blur, it depends very much on the car, track, the setup and driving style.
Personally, I wouldnt recommend drifting before you have learned to drive...this means tail braking, slow-in-fast-out, etc.
A good example is Spa. We just did a couple of races there, and while some take Masta flatout, I had just as fast an exit speed, even though I lifted a bit before entering it, simply because I didnt scrub the speed off by drifting.

Sling, you can get GPL for really cheap now, just check any online software store. Make sure once you get it, that you install all the various patches and add-ons for it. It's a completely different game with all the improvements that the community has created.
Oh btw, Nascar 4 uses the GPL physics engine, so it should be familiar to you.
GPL online is like a 15 plane furball that lasts for 45 minutes or longer! You will either be sweating, cursing or cheering when you finish each online race....probably all three! :D
-
Forgot one thing....if you want to get a good idea of what the cars and tracks in GPL look like, watch the 1966 film "Grand Prix".
-
I can't seem to get FFB in GPL working - is there an option in the game to be checked? I'm using the Thrustmaster FF Wheel (the Ferrari one ;)).
I have v1.2.
-
Yes, there is. :)
In the file core.ini, you should have a section that looks like this:
[ Joy ]
allow_force_feedback = 1 ; Use FF if device has it
force_feedback_damping = 40.000000 ; force feedback damping coefficient
force_feedback_latency = 0.085000 ; force feedback latency (secs)
max_steering_torque = 225.000000 ; steering torque in N*in giving max device force
If you don't have a core.ini file in your GPL folder, you need to create one.
-
If you want a one-stop shopping place for GPL, here it is:
http://www.noctua.f2s.com/links.html (http://www.noctua.f2s.com/links.html)
-
Thanks banana - I had play around with the files last night, and found the force feedback part of the core.ini file, but thanks for the advice anyway. :)
The FFB rocks! It makes the game slightly easier, and I *love* how you can actually feel the oversteer/understeer by the change in weight of the wheel. And when the back steps out - you have to fight it swerving back and forth.
Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any 'event' feedback - like crashing into other cars, walls etc (I do that alot). Do you see the same thing?
-
thanks banana...will look into it. I prefer the stock cars but this one looks like it could be fun....even if it does involve those sissy open wheel cars. :)
-

Nope, probably because I'm so skilled a driver that I never hit trees or other cars.....LOL! :D
Actually, I can't remember, I think you're right.

OK It's wheel time. I've added the FFB settings to the "core.ini and ordered the Logitec based on your recommendation (Must have someone to blame when it all goes tits up). :D Reading the reviews it seems to be adjustable to do just about anything via the "Profiler Thingy" (Excuse Technical jargon). banana do you have a profile you could mail me? I was specifically interested in the "Device Setting screen where you adjust the effects strength etc (I appreciate there isn't much you can do with the controls themselves - Throttle mapped to.... Now let me think). :D
Thanks in advance

Snafu, I don't use the Profiler, I just map all the buttons and paddles from within the game. IMO, there's not enough actions to warrant using the profiler. I have it installed, but I don't really use it. When you calibrate the wheel in the game controllers applet in Win98, it brings up the profiler, where you can go into settings and enable the force feedback to whatever strenght you want. Just remember that you must edit your core.ini file like I showed up above.
Oh btw, Dowding. Yes, you should be getting force feedback effects when you hit trees and other cars. In practice last night for our next race at Mosport, I hit many of both, and I felt it! :D

Nice one banana. :D
I must not be hitting them as hard as you. ;)
-
You're just not trying hard enough, then. :D
I will say, after getting help on my setup last night from one of theother drivers, that your car setup makes all the difference between just being able to hang on, and being blazingly fast.

I wish to recind that remark :D
Got my Wheel (Logitec Wingman Force GP). It's Awesome. The FFB is quite amazing and yes I can confirm it does recognise impact with walls, other cars etc, and the way it twitches as you change gear is very well done indeed. However my lap times went through the roof. After clawing them down to within 2 or 3 seconds of Blur's times I now find myself nearer 9 seconds outside what I am used to. They are slowly coming back down though and I hope to have it all back together in a few days. The next step is I suppose to try my 1st Destruction Derby - Sorry.... Online race :D I shall be setting up the required bits and peices over the next few days so I hope to see you on the black stuff.

That's the one. That's where I bought my copy. I've seen posts on other boards saying they've found copies at bargain basement prices but considering this is the best racing simulation, its well worth it.
Incidentally Papyrus released an updated version of their D3D rasterizer this week. There's no notice of it but it's new. Textures are much improved and objects especially fences have much more detail.
-
ok ive got the game version 1.0.0.0 but its UK version and i cant seem to find a 1.2_uk patch.
the 1.2_us doesnt work as it says invalid GPL.exe for update.
i got the D£D patch and it helps imeensely with GF2mx i was used to the lovely 3dfx version so when i got gf2mx it was like a step back!...but now its much better.
anyone in UK got the 1.2 update to work?

Hazed, you must be doing something wrong. Did you go to the one-stop shopping link that I posted above? There's got to be an answer for your problem somewhere in there.
-
Hi Hazed,
I'm running the 1.2 patch & the D3D patch. I started out with V1.0. I'll mail them to you if you like, Just let me know. (I've also got the No CD patch installed as well). It means I have to uninstall/reinstall each time I want to apply a patch (Not very often) but saves the hassle of loading the CD each time and reduces the chance of scratching it etc.

Sierra has released GPL as a budget title over here - I picked it up for a tenner.
The link that banana gave allows you to download the 1.2_uk.exe patch - I tried the US ones too, but it didn't work.

ok got it up and running :)
had my first inline races! crashed a lot! completed 2 races and got a 3rd and a 8th!
seems many disconnect when they have one crash though :( means if you do well you end up alone a lot of the time.
I try to stay in the games until end of the race, seems to make it better for winners that way :)
all my setups are drom default settings :( so im hardly competative im afraid.
good fun though and pretty stable.

lots of web pages on the web too,
great diversion from flying sims too :)
