"The US Gov't knew it was a matter of time before Jesse Jackson would step in and try to negotiate an end to the situation.  The US Gov't told the Chi-Coms that the US would be giving Jesse a one-way ticket, and his admittance back into the US would be refused, thus making China a Hostage of J.J."

my thoughts exactly. Right behind him - Ross Perot. Between the two of them, China would have become a democracy in a matter of weeks as it's leaders fled the country.
