Title: Jarhead
Post by: StarOfAfrica2 on October 27, 2005, 08:58:34 PM
Movie comes out in a week.  I cant tell from the previews if it looks like a winner or a stinker.  Anybody read any decent reviews of this yet?

either way I can't wait to see it.  It's based on a book called "welcome to the suck" a very common Marine phrase.

The book was basically the ramblings of a person who is unhappy with life, critical of everything.  Mostly that stems from a bad childhood, one of the joys of which was going with his Mother to visit his brother in jail.

I doubt the movie will be all that good, and being written from this guys view of life, probably depressing.

I will wait for some reviews to decide whether to see it.

Jake Gyllenhaal

I remember some publicist saying that after he fell down and knocked out a tooth, and he was all tough and all and shook off the pain and finished the scene, that "...it was like he became a man during the filiming..." As if he went through real combat or something.

"Yeah, the lattes were cold, my assistants were barred from the set and we slept in a chilly tent... You da man, Jake!

I bet he could still enlist in the real Marines if it got him that worked up. Jake... Jake... where ya at bud!

Donnie Darko becomes a lot more average when you realize that the entire plot is stolen from another short movie.

I don't put much stock into were somone got their ideas from if I've never heard/seen them.  Either way I would have never seen Donnie Darko had I not been wrestling with a bout of insomnia one night.  A movie isdecent to good if it makes you stay up till 3AM to watch it.

You gotta admit though bubble boy was oscar material.  ;)

and to be honest the kid didn't do that bad a job in Day after tommorow.

having only seen the commercials I have to give fore warning.  I have litterally known Marines that talk just like he does in that one clip.  We called them "moto" or "Ate up".

Question I have is.
Is it too soon for such a movie to come out?
What with the troops still over there and all.
Be kinda like if they made a movie on 9/11 now

** MAJOR MAJOR DONNIE DARKO SPOILER **.

The movie Donnie Darko is directly stolen from the movie "An Occurance at Owl Creek Bridge."

You mean: An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge - by Ambrose Bierce? The novel by the way, the one set on the Railroad bridge in Alabama?

Surely your not suggesting than a film shares another films ideas or storyline!

Thats unheard of...I'm sure the makers of Armagheddon, and Deep Impact will be crushed...

It's eight up as in points of contact, as in tits up or dead, not ate up you jarhead. Don't worry it's a common mistake, most people in the military even think it's "ate up".

Wow, thought me and like 4 other old guys knew the exact meaning of "eight up". And we try no to say "tits up" anymore, very un PC.

I give the book 7.5/10 for how I enjoyed it.  To me, the book read as if the first person character in "Catcher In The Rye" were writing his experience in the Corps.  The author does have a refreshing writing style and an interesting turn of words.

If you like the genre, if you want to know about the culture of Marines and sniper training including the Barrett rifle and Desert Storm, you will probably like the movie (if it is faithful to the book).  I usually like any movie about soldiering and war.

I've heard of that but we use it as in "ate up with a dumb ass"

Based on Jamie Foxx's acting in "Ray", I'll be seeing this one based on the actor alone. Dat man got some skillz!

Cool.  I've been on a streak lately, the wife went with me to see Lord of War and Domino both without any wrinkled nose act or anything.  Maybe I can talk her into this one.  :)

One of my old jobs was working at the gun counter at a Wal Mart, and my relief and sometime co-worker was an old Korean war vet named Bob.  The scene where (I think it's Chris Cooper) is giving the pep talk/speech "You will train, you will hydrate, and you will maintain a constant state of alertness........." really reminded me of the cigar chewing old fart.  He always said "hydrate" instead of "I'm going to get a drink of water."

Jarheads.  Sheesh.  :)
