with reading cd's and dvd's on my pc.
problem is basicaly I can't use either my cd burner or dvd burner (both from LG...52/32/52 cd burner, 16/16 dvd burner)
anytime I try to access a disk in either drive my system shutsdown and reboots.
no problems are showing up in device manager (yes still using win98, upgrading to xp next weekend)
I have no clue as to what is wrong.
both are new drives, cd burner is a few months old, picked up the dvd burner this morning.

Did they ever work before?
-
sorry
ya the cd burner works just fine in another pc, haven't had the chance to test the new dvd player yet though.
-
did you install any new games in the last few days? they might have starforce on them.
-
nope, like I said anything I try and read from either drive crashes the system, so no new games
only game I'm playing right now is O game and that's web based

Overloaded power supply?
Maybe the drive cable is plugged in backwards? (been there done that)
Maybe both drives are jumpered "master" or "slave", or jumpered the same as whatever drive is on the same cable? (been there done that)
Defective cables? (been there done that)

yup what eagl said. I went through more than a few headachs installing windows (5 times in a row) because I had the drives jumpered wrong.

checked all of the jumpers and cables, they're correctly possitioned.
Also thought I might be over loading my power suply too, so I tried with only my c drive and cd burner, disconected the sound card and network card...same problem.
sigh after 10 odd years of fiddling with pc's I'm finally thinking of bringing it in to the shop to check out

this may sound silly, but with my MB i MUST use "cable select" on the jumpers.
i originally had them set to master and slave, and in the proper places on their cable, but just like you, no go.
also, sadly and i mean this just because i have done it, checked the cables, checked again, slept overnight, went back and looked again, and found 1 was reversed. it can happen, and i have done it where i swear up and down they are right.
lastly, in win 98 isn't there something in the win.ini or related files that sets drive letters manually? could that be corrupt, or trying to assign something to the drives?
