Title: How Cool Would This Be?
Post by: Skilless on November 01, 2005, 12:23:52 AM
I would like to see integrated into the game spherical maps rather than flat squares.  Many often complain that where a country is placed at the start of a war often dictates it's outcome.  It doesn't actually have to be a sphere, just instead of "flying off the edge of the map" like happens now, have the plane appear on the opposite side of the map. If the map were designed properly this could be done seamlessly.  For example, if you fly west off the west side of the map you will reappear  flying west on the east side of the map.  The same for north and south.

I'd like it I think, even with the greatly exagerated horizon curve.  I'd like it enough that I suggested it three years ago. :p

There are technical issues for sure.  The horizon curve would make it hard to orient your aircraft by using it.

They should do away with the curve all together.  No curve at all would be more realistic than the grossly exagerated one they have now and it would make this idea very easy to incorporate into future maps.

Although this is probably a feature to press for in AHIII...

The curve we have now is from viewable distance limitations and is entirely different than the curve we'd have from flying over a planet with a circumference of a mere 512 miles.  When you look out across the ocean in reality you can see the orizon curve due to the Earth's shape, and it has a circumference is 24,902.4 miles.  Imagine how disconcerting it would be to fly over a planet with ~1/49th the circumference of the Earth's.

Which is why I said that perhap perfectly flat maps would be better than a sphere.  Make the map like terrain pop up.  When you get a certain distance from the edge of the map, a duplicate map is generated at that edge so that if you fly off the west side if the map you fly onto east side of the same map.  The same for north and south.  Island maps like donut would work perfectly because you wouldn't have to worry about terrain match-up due to the fact that the entire perameter of the map is water.  This would make all countries vulnerable to attack from all sides so the HQs would have to be more centrally located in each country.  The more I think about it the more I think it would totally enhance gameplay.

Like I also said, perhaps it's too much coding for HiTech and is perhaps a feature to push for in AHIII

I think the rooks should have cloud bases, 45,000 feet....with 30 inch guns capable of reaching targets 200 miles away.

Oh, and auto ack lasers that can kill at 10,000 yards to prevent vulching and toolshedding.

:lol
