Title: Trivia #8
Post by: monteini on November 01, 2005, 01:58:13 PM
The Boeing B-17 bomber is a four-engine taildragger that does not have reversible-pitch propellers. How is it possible for a pilot to back the Flying Fortress into a parking space from within the cockpit?

im probably wrong but i'll take a stab at it. was it something to do with being able to control the landing gear in some way? having some way of moving the wheels from the cockpit?

He said back up. I'd wager (wild guess) it had small power units in the wheels to drive it. Otherwise I'd say "tow tractor"

With the left wheel locked and the left outboard engine ran up, the the right wheel would move backward.  Now lock the right wheel and run up the right outboard engine up and the left wheel will move ackward.  The plane has moved backward.

Brilliant. I would have never thought of it on my own.

Correct nice job Skilless and Golfer, this was common practice in ww2 where a tractor was not present.

He thinks he is cool, but fails to realize that he really isn't.   Just ignore the tool.
