Need a good profile, especially the noseart of a P-51B
VT-F "Shangri-La"
Thanks
I would assume the red/white nose check would be on both sides?

Start here. This guy is a Gentile Junkie and has done some great artwork of that bird. I'm headed out of town for three days. I'll get the scanner going when I get back, if no one beats me to it :)

Thanks Dan, made a start, found a good pic of the noseart, think the scroll gonna be a pain though.

You could always do one of the earlier examples of the plane- smaller scroll, fewer crosses.
I think the white spinner hes usually depicted with was only from early April of 44 on too.
-
Was that not the default P51B skin in the early days of AH2? If you have a previous version still on your computer you shuold be able to save that skin and have the scroll already made at about 256x256
-
Not sure.
Well this is try number 1 using a mesh deform for the scroll -

-
Kev if Ht approves that skin it's the only skin I'll use in the b model.

How did you do that mesh deform? Did you do it in Photoshop?
-
Paint shop pro using mesh warp.
Started with a completely right angled shape with the kill markings.
Then just drug the mesh points around.
Finally added the scrolls at the ends.
Gonna play a little more think I can improve on it.
-
Hrm.. I've been looking for a way to do similar things in Photoshop, but I cannot figure out how. I know I've done it before, but how??
I specifically want to take something and arch it around a point, and other related types of morphs.
-
Attempt 3 at the scroll, think this looks much better.

looks great kev!
"shangri la" is one of my favorite p51b schemes.
dont forget the exhaust shroud brownish burnt metal unpainted... its still RAF colors on the screenshots
could you make the rivets look more flush though? on the brit 51d I looked at they looked pretty raised. I can't tell on these pics though hehe.
I can share with you my technique for rivet deformation so you wont have to make the rivets unrealistically pronounced and show the way they deform the skin instead if you are interested in going all out. (its tedious but pretty effective)
only major raised rivets on the pony are on the top and bottom wing spar joint by the guns and the line of heavy rivets around each fuel tank under the wings. everything else is flush.
btw do you have a pic of the outer ammo doors showing bolts on the trailing edge? all my photos show only and access latch (right about where that stencil is) on that ammunition door with no screws or bolts.
I am wondering if somehow everyone is copying an innacurate artists drawing.
the mechanics of the gun bay doors as far as I can tell are the front inner door folds forward and the lower door slides off and the outer door unlatches and slides off. the front inner door seems like it secures the other two as far as I can tell so from what photos I have seen of warbirds with working gun ammo bay doors there shouldnt be any screws.
just wondering if you have a reference on that.
-
The outer door covering the ammo belts had 10 fastners - 5 rear / 5 front. There were also raised rivets around all fuel / acess panels... rest was pretty flush -
95% sure on that...lol
Went and looked and the ammo doors look to have rivets on them...slightly larger where the hinge attaches to the panel, and the rest are just holding the top metal to the support structure of the panel.

Rivet technique - Oooh yes please, always willing to learn new stuff :) .
Exhaust shrouds - Yup, they still need doing.
Bolts etc - Just copied from a 3d drawing, showed bolts there.

Kev,
I was looking for B model mustangs in general and found this shot of Gentile's B. I had never seen it before, so I thought I would bring it to your attention in case you also find it useful.

-
Kev,
Would you be so kind as to divulge what color you used for the red nose on this skin?
Thanks,
-
Will take me a wee while to dig it up, will let you know.
-
I know old thread, but I had a couple questions on it and figured better to dig up the old than start a new.
1) Same as Fencers- what shade of red did you use for the nose?
2) Why did you decide to go with the full-red spinner, not the white-tipped one? It wore that at the end, did you do an earlier version?
3) What were the shades you used for the base OD/Grey? Those are almost perfectly faded looking at period color photos, just wondering what color you used to duplicate it.
-
Heres Dom and "Shangri-La" returning from the 8 April '44 mission where he got 3. Great look at a beautiful bird.
This is why I'm asking about the spinner btw- it has the same number of kills on the scroll, but not the same spinner. Just curious.
-
Story on the spinner is that the first coating of fire engine red, essentially wore off and had to be re-done.

Note the mention of that and go away.
-
I shall go away, and I meant no offense, but asking a follow-up question ("What color red?") is one thing, and posting a dozen images/resources is perhaps another thing.
Isn't this the default P51B skin already?
EDIT: Nope, not default, but already in the game
