Can you use VOIP. with Satelite internet connection?....like vonnage/>?
Father in law lives in boonies..needs bettr phone service..He bought a booster for his cell phone(external antena) on house ..but would like to have a back up
Im thinking it wont work as well as cell phone becuase of delay going to space and back..The same delay when you wacth live interviews from across the world.

Lag is going to be huge. On order of 2000 ms or more b/c it has to go up 25000 miles, then back down, and get relayed.
SAT is fine for browsing and sending email - but nothing that involves real time data.

Cell is mostly line of sight. If he doesn't have LOS, all the booster's in the world won't help.

Fwiw,
Having used voip over a sat connection it's not a big deal. It doesn't take long before you get the rythm of the conversation to fit with the delat. Figure about a second and a half to 2 seconds. If you use a radio protocal (over at end of transmission) you won't "step" on each other. It's not as good as a phone but if phone isn't available it's not a bad way to go.
I've used net2phone to dial another person.

I think Vulcan is reffering to Radio Frequency options, i.e. radio phone, shortwave, etc...
I have no personal experience with these systems but I understand that, in truly remote areas, these are fairly typical solutions. I really don't know the scope of available options, but I'm sure a quick search would turn up plenty to consider.

Yup, NZ has a lot of Radio Frequencie telephone stuff, and data as well. Because we're quite hilly/mountainous in some regions - sometimes you can't even get satellite.
