Title: Grand Prix 3......
Post by: jmccaul on August 04, 2000, 06:24:00 PM
I just bought GP3 (Geoff Crammond) and it is brilliant(even the manuals thicker than the bible - and more intresting).

To the point, I want to buy a FF wheel (& pedals) and was wondering what someone recommended.

Saw it the other day in the shop (my father offered himself to buy me a game-first time in 4 years!! wtg dad!!   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)).

I didnt dare to pick it...my FR would go under minimum   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif)  I love F1...but it is too game for my PC.

I used to play GP (yes the original), back in the 386 days. It was simply great!...but I know that GP3 is way over my computer's reach...so I let it go.

but I got Vampire: the masquerade instead.

(BTW WONDERFUL RPG!)   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

When I picked up GP3 I was a bit dissapointed by the graphics but I gave it another try before resigning it to the shelf and now I'm hooked! just a shame its the 1998 season  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif)

As for the FF wheel, I use a MS Sidewinder FF Wheel and it makes all the difference to driving games, GP3 had pretty good FF although I have been spoilt by GPL's FF support (IMHO THE best FF implementaion in any sim I've played) The wheel is solid in its contruction and taken a few knocks as I change from the wheel to my HOTAS. The wheel is comfortable to use as it has rubberised sections in the '10 to 2' hands position on the wheel. The buttons given a nice solid feeling when depressed and all 8 of them can be mapped using the easy to use software that comes with the wheel. The pedals are also pretty solid and don't slip like my old TM wheels used to.

My only gripes are that the pedal action is a bit weak, although this is cured by putting half a squash ball behind the pedal. The other thing I would have liked is larger proper panels behind the wheel instead of the buttons, they are easy to reach but I prefer paddles (would have also been nice to have them analogue too  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) )

I'd certainly recommend the Microsoft wheel even if it does line the evil Bill Gates pockets  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

Other good sims with good FF implementation: Dodge Viper Racing, Midtown Madness, Grand Prix Legends.

since we are on the subject of racing sims and FF wheels, let me just say that
SCGT Rocks!!!!!!!!(Sports Car GT)
has i think 8 player support and the best GT car driving model i have ever tried.
Thats pretty good since if its not AH i'm playin its some racing game on my PC or a consol.

The wheel on the other hand, I have to agree on the MS Sidewinder FF.  Rocks!!
Havin a good wheel makes all the difference in the world.  especially if your goin from stick to wheel   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

Logitech Wingman Formula Force, $58 (refurbished).  My friend and I both have refurb wheels and they are great, as good as new. http://www.compgeeks.com/cgi-bin/details.asp?cat=InputDevices&sku=205-8649 (http://www.compgeeks.com/cgi-bin/details.asp?cat=InputDevices&sku=205-8649)

I'm a fan of the Grand Prix Legends FF implementation because the physics model actually calculates the the forces in the steering linkage of the car in real time.    (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

I like SCGT too.  Physics are a lot more arcadish than GPL but it's a very fun game.

Just bought it, but haven't played it any. It doesn't seem to want to accept my rudder pedals as joystick 2 inpput for accelerator.

Also, the graphics is sort of 1998ish.

When my new ccpu gets here, I'll give it a go, but those cheesy graphics of the rear wheels really bug me  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

But, I loved 1 and 2 for gameplay, not graphics, so will probably love this one too  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Thanks Funked for the link unfortunatly the shipping would cost $144. So at the moment i have to decide between the Wingman Formula Force (£95) or a Guillemot wheel (£80).

I do agree and disagree about the graphics i think they look a bit cartooney but are quite nice at high res with all the bells and whistles turned on they look quite reasonable. The most stunning thing is when i use a fresnal lense and it gives an amazing impression of speed and depth.

hey cool, some F1 Fans here !   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
I play GP3 too, but i'm bit disapointed, GP3
is GP2 with Weather effects.
Though the Rain effect is really cool!
There are some Hotlaps from me here:

http://home.t-online.de/home/Aircombat/gp3.htm (http://home.t-online.de/home/Aircombat/gp3.htm)

but do not send me your Hotlaps please, our
Hotlap Competition is just between some of
my friends and me   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)
I would suggest to take a look at the Wetlaps !

I have a bunch of TM wheels.  I got them when TM was across the street and I used to Beta-test for them.  That was a rough time... playing GPL for 4 hours with my friends on TM's network... then getting a free driving wheel for my efforts (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

I like the TM (Guillemont) stuff.  The paddle setups are nice.  Afterall... it is a formula 1 racer (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

I had the privilege of seeing GP3 on a 50" (letterbox) Phillips gas-plasma display at E3. O.mi.god.

That's where my next $17,000 of upgrade money is going to!  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

A bunch of Air Warriors and a few of us AH typs have been racing GPL online using WinVorc. We have weekend races <Saturdays 9am  and 11pm EST> as well as weekday practice races. If anybody is interested in joining us just drop me an e-mail and I'll help with the necessary patches set-ups and tracks and such.
