Title: Naturalization Self Test
Post by: Seagoon on November 11, 2005, 02:21:51 PM
Hi Guys,

I'm in the process of applying to become a naturalized citizen of the United States. The process involves meeting the intial criteria, filling out the 10 page form, sending in the princely sum of $330, being fingerprinted, and then eventually taking the oath of allegiance and passing an oral test in US government and history. I was initially planning on buying the study guide and spending a month going through my books on US history and constitutional law until I took the online self-test.

Did anyone else here ever go through naturalization? Is the test really this easy? I don't want to get cocky and then ended up flubbing it because I can't name the Michigan state bird, or who becomes President if the POTUS, VPOTUS, Secretary of State and all the Members of the Congress are killed or incapacitated.

Here's the self test: Naturalization Self Test (http://uscis.gov/graphics/exec/natz/natztest.asp)

Michigan state bird is the Robbin.
(I only know this because I live there)

I've always heard that the test is really difficult and that most Americans couldn't pass it.  I followed your link and took the test 5 times and got one question wrong. (Which amendment to the constitution does NOT address voting rights)  You strike me as an extremely intelligent person seagoon,  I don't think you'll have any problems.

P.S.  Congratulations on you decision and welcome.  Good luck.

I actually helped one of my co-workers study for it. He passed it with a 100%. If you paid attention in school & read the news on occasion it's easy.

i helped someone study for it, (they passed) it is mostly stuff about the US govt,

how many states-50
how many stars on flag and what they mean-50 one for each state
how many stripes and what they mean-13 one for each origanal state
how many senators and why-100, two for each state
how many representatives-435 according to population
who your fed senators are
who your fed representative is

i think they only ask you 5 questions.

good luck and welcome.

1. Who is the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court today?
George W. Bush
Thomas Jefferson
Janet Reno
William Rehnquist

uhh....  might want to update that.

I took the test 4 times (5 questions each) and missed two.  One was a 'which amendment does what' regarding the 15th amendment (whoops) and the other asked how many supreme court justices there are (I answered how many seats there are, not how many are in now).

some of the answers are symplified and show a lack of understanding of american history. for instance: "Who did america fight in the revolutionary war?" the answer they want you to give is "england" but the correct answer is great britain. this is because we were not just fighting english, but scotts, welsh, irish, germans (under brit command of course).

Tried this test until questions began to repeat. What I didn't remember was for how long representatives and senators are elected (shame on me) and the number of ammendments. Soviet school wasn't bad after all...

No, there are two Senators from each state, no matter the population. So dinky Rhode Island has 2 and so does California. California does have the most irritating Senators however, with New York coming in second. ;)

Here are some practice questions Seagoon.

All real Americans can answer these.

1. Who was the first Playboy centerfold?

2. What Gun did Dirty Harry use?

3. Who was Ira Hayes?

4. Who sang the Ballad of Ira Hayes?

5. Who played first base on the 1927 Yankees?

6. Name four Yankee Managers.

7. Who played 3rd base on the 69 Orioles?

8. Who were the two Quarterbacks in Superbowl III?

9. How many fights did Rocky Marciano win?

10. What did Havlecek do at the last moment?

Swoop...

I recall reading somewhere that the actual, actual name of the country (The United Kingdom of Great Britain, Northern Ireland and Wales??), also included an often ignored reference to the British monarchy's legal claim to the throne of France.

Is this correct as far as you know?  I seem to remember something about how, historically, the English had succeeded in pursuing the hereditary claim to the French throne (a la Henry V), but that modern sensibilities precluded making a big deal about it.

It was an interesting tidbit...can you expand?

Regards...

My wife became a citizen in '94.

She said the test was easy, no problem.  She thought the process was the hardest part.

Now, since she is a woman, and Italian, and she said it was easy, you should pass with no problems at all!  Afterall, none of the questions involved determining the correct time to cook pasta!  Which btw, she knows very well, and I am a very happy man because of it.

I was born in Great Britain (Rochford, to be exact) and moved the USA with my parents when I was 6 years old. My wife is American, my kids are American, heck, even my Dad is now a naturalized citizen - definitely time for me to get with the program. ;)

1,2, and 3 were a cinch. But as soon as you hit sports history, I drew a complete blank. Apparently I'm sunk and don't have what it takes to become a real American.

I do however know how many times Arsenal have won the FA cup, and what songs to sing at the clock end of Highbury.
