I know this sounds dumb, but are ya sure you have the headset plugged in right? I know I've done this a couple of times, plugged the mic jack into the headset and vis versa. A mic jack has two metal contacts seperated by a piece of plastic, a head set plug has 3 metal contact seperated by two pieces of plastic. The pink connector on the board is for the mic, and the lime green one is for the headset.

Now with the AC 97 codex you are suppose to be able to use up to 6 speakers, in which case they do away with the mic input. Go to start/control panel/ sounds and audio devices. Click on the speaker settings advance button and make sure you are set on "Desktop Speakers".

If none of this helps, I'd pay someone else to fix it :D  Good luck!

i did this right, pink to pink , green to green:)
i did try speakers input settings in sound panel (separate one from standard windows)

i use 2 diferent sets of headset, both of them works good with skype
but not in AH
AH voice is still low
when i do voice test in windows, green bar just move slighly (1-2 green bars of 10-15 avilible)

Have you checked the 'mic +20db' box that's somewhere in microphone properties?

My old pc had ac97 and it would lock up and lose mic transmit after a few uses .

I updated the sound drivers and its worked fine ever since .

I had that problem for the last 3 years of my AC'97 hunk-o-junk. I'd have to check and uncheck the boost for it to work after every restart.

lose the SB16 and get a SB Audigy 2zs or at least the SBLive 5.1  SB live goes for about 15-20 bucks now I believe and the audigy 2ZS U can pick up for 40 I think maybe less.  Audigy's2 is much better the live but both work very well for AH.
