Title: the moss
Post by: wylieboy on November 12, 2005, 04:27:04 PM
Ok I was watchin tv one night and they were talkin 'bout the Mosquito, and they said it was made out of wood, and could NOT be picked up on radar. But in AH a mossy can be picked up on radar. Can't the HTC staff make it where the mossy can't be picked up on radar, if they did it would add some more reallity to the game.

I didnt think being made of metal or wood made a difference with radar. I thought it was the shape irregardless what it was made of.

I think wylieboy was stoned and he was actually watching the microwave, not TV.

Stealth mossie my arse.  The only time it couldn't be picked-up on radar is when the radar was down for repair.

The Mosquito most certainly utilzied wood in its construction, as did many of the aircraft designed and built in Britain. Wood, like plastic, does not reflect radar waves nearly as well as metal.

However, its powerplants, propellors, armament, and various other components were most certainly made of metals. While its radar cross section might have been lower than an all-metal aircraft, it is likely that the difference would have made the detection range a modest amount lower. Otherwise, all allied bombers would have been made of wood and flown at night untouched by the the Luftwaffe.

He's actually correct...well semi-correct.  The Mosquito wasn't totally invisible to radar but its wood construction did make it "stealthy".  The wood construction did give the Mosquito a lower radar profile than those planes with all-metal construction.  This did result in German radar having some difficulties in aquiring Mosquitos.  Coupled with the nape of the Earth flying tactics employed by Mosquitos in some of their most famous raids did make them the "stealth" fighter of their time.
