Title: Rocket hit on B17
Post by: Morpheus on November 13, 2005, 10:19:40 PM
Kind of a pointless but cool film, but it shows proxi hit to a b17 from a 110 rocket.

Oh, that's worth beaucoup style points ;).  Anyway, I've never had any luck with these things.  Got some firing parameters for us?  Thanks.

i was a little over 1k when I fired the rocket that hit. seems if you were to place 1 rocket between the formation you might be able to take 2 or all three of them out.

That's was purty. Looks like you were 1.5K on the film.

I just thought it was cool that you could slow the film down enough to actually see the rocket.

Nice film there morph.   I get mixed results with hits when using rockets but it sure is purty when ya get the hits.  Thanks for the film.

Yeah, I havent found a sure way of getting hits. I can get very close, and many times the blast alone will knock off wings. That was the first time I got it on film so when I went back to look at it and saw how cool it looked slowed down I figured I'd turn it into avi.

1k seems to be the magic number but the trick is getting elevation down for trajectory. But sitting on the arse end of a bomber at 1k out is never a smart thing to do for too long. Especially in a big mother target like a 110.

I've managed to shoot down exactly 1 plane with the air to air rockets. it was a 109.
Havent been able to dupilcate it yet but I think I've gotten close a few times.

I did however once on a very lucky shot back in AHI manage to shoot down 2 B17's with the rickets from a tiffy.

Myself and some squaddies were on a feild porking mission when we encountered a rook horde of about 15 B17 formations inbound  on our high 12:00.

Out of in part frustration/aggrivation I nosed up and fired all 8 rockets at the incomming horde not expecting to hit any of them

Next thing I know I saw two explosions and was awarded two kills.

One of those moments I wish I had filmed LOL

SHot down lots of stuff with rockets from the P-38. 2 weeks ago a pair of AR-234's screwming at me on the deck. Rocket hit the lead ship right in the brain pan and clipped the left wing  of the right wingman - and that was all she wrote for the formation. Several video recordings of B-17s and Lancs and 24s ranging from P-47 HVAR's and 38's. Also had an occasional 190D that got clipped - didn't have it recorded though.

Prox fuses are fine on the mortars the 109 190 and 110 carry. But the range and velocity is something to be desired. I usually don't like to get that close and prefer direct hits to a maybe it'll explode close enough.

But maybe i'm just old school.

I'll post the link when the picture hanger returns to its usual self.
