What vehicle should I look int ogetting?
Toyota Tacoma?
Ford Ranger?
I need a small size truck with off road capability (not nesc. 4x4), but solid, ok on gas, and reliable.
-
Toyota Tacoma Pre-Runner...its a 4x2 setup..It has the clearance of 4x4 but just the 2wd. A better buy and far more reliable.
-
why do you need off road capability?
-
The Ranger is the most bulletproof Truck in its class. The Tacoma is a Mid-size truck (Dakota).
Ford has the best trucks on the planet. Believe whatever you want, they do. Again, I would go for the Ranger.

My next-door neighbor just bought a Tacoma PreRunner. He had intended to simply buy a used 2003 or 2004 Tacoma, but found that the trucks held on to their value so well that there was little savings to be gained by going used.
As for being bulletproof, it's a good bet that you'll get 250,000 miles out of a Toyota pickup.

go russian!
Russian for quality = Lada!

Your cool friends will love it when you turn up in one of these, you will be the coolest cat in town. The badge 'Lada' just screams class and reliability.

I'd say Ford Ranger also. Though I don't know much about the recent models.
Our Ranger was an 86 model (or so) and lasted through to 2003 when we sold it.
-
Wow, I actually like the look of that thing Furball.....that thing got a hemi??!!?
-
Ranger in a heartbeat. My buddy has owned 2 and loved both. He recently traded in his early 90's model for an 05. He got the old one when he was 16, so he's had over 10 years of trouble-free service from it, plus however long the previous owner had it.
Do your own research though, as only you know what you really need from a truck.
-
Well,
Only thing that shyed me away from the ranger was it's look..
But I guess if I get it in the right color..
:D
Yea I'll do my own research, just wanted to see what others had to say about them..:aok

There was a few episodes of Top Gear last year that they deliberately tried to kill a Toyota pickup. Did some weird stuff to it. Hit it with a wrecking ball. Put it on top of a building and then blew up the building. etc...
The only rule was that they couldn't replace anything.
Damn thing still ran.

If you know another 4WD at the price of Niva - please let me know.
Niva is the only good car made here since GAZ-21 (1956).
And it's a car that can be fixed with plyers, hammer and some steel wire. It's almost as simple as a Kalashnikov. It's not as good off-road as UAZ-469, but it doesn't need a sergreant to maintain it 24/7 like UAZ.

I don't normally even consider foreign cars (bizarre, considering I'm an overseas import myself) but if I had the money to blow, I might consider looking into the 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid:

Whoops, just realized you were asking about a Truck, not an SUV, my mistake.
Only Advice: avoid the Titan, 2 of my friends have just dumped theirs as gargantuan money sinks.

Heh, in the police academy we did some fire training. One of the training exercises was putting out a car fire with handheld extinguishers. Our instructors dumped a bunch of diesel and gas on a Chevy Lumina sedan and lit it. Two of us put it out. They dumped some more, lit it again. Put it out. Repeat probably 8-10 times, lighting different areas to simulate things like engine fires, fuel tank fires, trunk fires, passenger cabin fires, and finally fully engulfed fires.
Afterward, the instructor hopped in and started the damn thing up. He didn't try to put it in gear, but the engine was running. Wipers even worked if you stuck a screwdriver in and articulated the switch (the handle had melted). Of course, the wipers were gone as was the windshield, but the wiper arms moved back and forth. :) I couldn't believe it. The car was gutted and the engine still ran. Eventually it stopped after we cut the fuel line and lit that. :D
I've got some pretty cool pics of it but they're pretty big and I've got no place to host.

I refuse to EVER pay $700 a month for a car.
I got the Chevy s-10 with the Vortec 4.3 v-6. Good power, and it does come in a 4wd version.
-
IIRC the Ford ranger is made by Mazda. Same truck just different trim. I forget who makes the s10 for chevy but it's a similar situation. I had a Dodge Dakota 4x4 with auto trnsmission. Good ride, decent power and mileage even with the V8 and more interior room than any other smaller PU. Before the Dodge I had an isuzu 4x4 and drove that sucker for over 100k miles. The darn thing never let me down and ran like a watch when I traded it in. The Dodge was huge compared to the isuzu though.
FWIW I think most of the smaller PU's are a good deal for everyday driving. Just don't try and get too aggressive with them. Get the extended cab as the additional room inside is worth it.
-
Buying toyota is like buying anything from sony.
You're paying 25% extra for a name.
A name brand that does not live up to is reputation anymore.
friends 99 tocoma prerunner is falling apart. The engine may make 250k but the rest of it will be junk by then.
He has replaced the ignition switch, and the starter, the back springs need to be replaced, the knobs on the AC and radio are falling off.
The interior is falling apart.
My moms toyota is the same and a 2000.
Maybe they just got unlucky.

Oddly enough that Isuzu 4x4 you drove around was a Chevy S-10 4x4. The new Colorado's are actually really nice. The 4 and 5 Cylinder engines are generations ahead of the Ranger motors, and much smoother than the Tacoma engine to me. But to be honest, if you want a Ranger or S-10/Colorado buy the Mazda or Isuzu. Exact same truck, but you pay less because most people don't realize they are the same. I'm not sure if the sticker prices are the same, but you can pick up an exact same model Isuzu truck here for about 3 or 4 grand less brand new after rebates and dealer incentives.

stay away from the fluffied over re-built dodge, and the rice grinder.
get a Chevy.
nuff said.

I could show you footage of Toyota's, Dodge's, Nissan's, and GM's with blown out bearings, shocks, etc. Hell, the Chevy's bed became seperated over the washboard road at the Dearborn Test Track. Again, overall, Ford produces the best trucks on the planet.
