Title: Any Spit VIII skins underway?
Post by: Karnak on November 16, 2005, 01:25:20 AM
I am really liking the Spit VIII.  I can fly a Spit in the MA and not feel like I am standing still.  It is such fun to be flying Spitfires again after all these years.

What I am wondering is if any of you guys who do such wonderful skins has a Spit VIII skin lined up?  Particularly the two I am interested in are Grey Nurse with that somewhat different shark mouth or the one with the leaping panther around the fuselage roundel.  I don't have any profile of Grey Nurse, but here is a photo of the profile for Spit VIII UME in Spitfire: The History.

It isn't very good, but hopefully it is enough to direct you to a good one or to clarify what I am talking about for Dan.

I also would like some new skins for the spitties.

I have found that I like the 16 for down and dirty "I'm outnumbered" work, but the 8 more for general purpose work. I was doing pretty well vs some rooks as a bish in a few vs few between two fields. In the 16 I and 2 others (spit8 and 109 of unknown make) vs 3 rook (n1k2, a6m5, alternating p38 and la5/7) and I got 4 kills in a sortie, rtb for gas reasons only.

I then took an 8 (still trying them all) and got a few more, and found that one of the others also took an 8 up and we got into this wicked tight fight that ended after a 262 dweeb rushed in from 5k twice and picked me on the second try. C'est la AH2. Anyways, I think that more skins are the key... Yes. Skins make me fly better.

No, I'm serious here!! I only fly with 1-2 skins when I use 190a5. Only 1 skin for 190a8. Only 1 skin for p51B, and 1-2 for D. It's like Skull's Gaming Fez.

I need some spit skins that make me a better pilot, even if it's only in my head.

After I've finished the XVI (90%+ done), and the pink IX (80% done), have a USAF desert camo Mk VIII lined up.

"Fargo Express" HL-K

Then the Blue Malta Spit V

Shouldn't be a problem with Ramzey doing that one.
The extended tips were removed/refitted as and when required, much the same way as the clipped tips.

Not sure I've seen any photos of that particular Spit.

Keep in mind with the extended wingtips.  This initially was going to be standard on the VIII and the early ones came off the line with them.  They were removed and regular tips put on.  There are many photos of MTO VIIIs early on with rounded rudder and extended tips as that is how they were sent out initially.

It doesn't mean that they had Merlin 70 engines however, they have have had the Merlin 61 of the FVIII as well.

Jeffrey Quill in his book "Spitfire-A Test Pilot's Story" talks about the debate that went on about the extended tips and how he argued for regular wing tips on the VIII
