I'm looking to buy a couple and was hoping someone had a lead on deals for ipod nanos...I need to buy 2 for xmas and perhaps one for myself.

Me too.. :)

I found a good price on a 2gb ipod nano on amazon.com
$195.
I'm thinking a sandisk unit for myself with a flash driver rather than a hard drive for my purposes since I use a flash drive often now for carrying around a copy of my resume and what not and have had good success. It's also under $100 for a 1gb unit. Plenty for me.

Ipod nanos are flash based, too. Even the hard drive based ones can be used as portable plug and play hard drives, although they're obviously bigger.

apple.com perhaps?

Yeah, Apple.com it was. At the time, there wasn't any variation in price no matter where you went. It was $249.99 for the 4GB. Took it with me on a work trip down to Southern Oregon, and had it playing nonstop through a tape adapter for about 10 hours, all on battery power. I'm not sure how much longer it would have gone though, as it was sitting at the bottom of the battery indicator for the last hour or so...I think their claim of 14 hours of battery life is bunk considering I rarely touched it during the trip except to pause it or turn it off once or twice.

I still swear by my 40gb RCA. Ipod won't play WMA files and IMHO is just overpriced eye candy. I paid $160 for it on eBay. I have 3,500 songs on it (my entire CD collection) plus I back-up my important personal files with it and it's just a little over half full.

Out of curiousity, how common is the WMA format in peoples music collections, and why would they choose to use it? It seems like an odd decision to make.

It is the default code for Media Player althought you can change it to MP3. A 192k rip to WMA is the equivelant of a 256k rip to MP3. 2/3 of my collection is WMA. The rest are "bought" MP3s from the internet ripped at 128k. There is an amazing difference in sound quality between the two. An interesting side note is that the online music stores that sell MP3s for 99 cents each only offer them in MP3 ripped to 128k. It would be nice if they offered them at higher bit rates for a few cents more. Typically what I do (I'm a stickler for sound quality) is buy the CD and rip it to 192k WMA, then stick the CD in the closet.
