Second-hand account of US soldiers' opinions of the weapons they are issued in Iraq. Good read, if you can get around the bravado:

used my m4 in afghanistan and iraq.. i never had a problem with jamming.. key is when you clean it... wipe if clean of all oil and use graphite as a lube.. the graphite powder is avail to all soldiers over there... there is just a lack of knowledge about it.. you also have to clean your weapon as much as you clean your butt over there... as for firepower.. yea it lacks the punch but then again, why would you try to engage a target that is on the other side of a cinderblock wall... waste of ammo... the key is well aimed shots.  if you want to engage something on the other side of a wall, use the M2.  the bad guys that i ran into wore flack jackets.. good against flack, not bullets.

the M249... once again, never seen or heard of a problem with it except that it fires too fast.  a suppression weapon does not require that high of a rate of fire.. waste of ammo.. the M240b is a nice weapon.. its just too bulky and heavy for light patrol missions.. the army should change it out for a M60e...

im my line of work, ammo is critical and you must keep your weapon clean.
