Title: AH Without a Joystick
Post by: xtyger on November 24, 2005, 03:55:44 PM
My joystick(s), both of them by strange coincidence, went south on me so I had to order a new one. Until the new one arrives, I figured maybe I could play using the mouse. If nothing else, maybe just shoot down planes from GVs. I tried using the mouse both on and offline in an M16 and it's damned near uncontrollable. The guns traverse real slow and then keep on going after I move the mouse in the other direction. It's pretty much impossible to get the sights anywhere near the cons.

Is there some calibration of the mouse or some such that needs to be done first. I read someone saying that he knew someone who just used a mouse to play and the guy was quite good at it. Hard for me to believe from my experience, at least so far. I use a logitec cordless, optical mouse. Might that contribute to the problem? The mouse is great for everything else.

AFAIK theres no way/need to calibrate the mouse.

Right click on mouse to center all controls, ie set back to 0 input. So anytime you get the inputs confused, hit right mouse button and youre back on track from a clean slate so to speak.

Other than that. Mouse flying is quite possible, just takes some getting used to.

If you want some 'mouse training' just holler when you see me online or PM me and we can meet in TA.

...for the tip. Didn't seem to help much from my angle. The movement is still WAY too erratic to get a bead on anything. I can't seem to get within an inch or two of a target. Just went up and tried a field gun. Must have something to do with this optical mouse. Oh well. I'll be back up when I get the new joystick in the mail, which might take awhile.

I ordered it from some company on e-bay. I ordered it on Sunday and didn't get confirmation of payment until Thursday. I suspect they'll be as slow shipping as they were processing my order. Bummer.

I'm pretty sure there will be a mouse sensitivity setting? if its possible, the 'deadband' fuction decreases unwated movements. I dont recall if thereis an option for this though.

I do know that there hav e been people who fly AH on the mouse, and kill pretty effectively too..

Yeah, like I said earlier, I saw some comments made by someone messaging during the game that someone he knew used a mouse and was quite good at it. I guess it's beyond me. I just tried setting deadband and whatever that other one was all the way to the top, as opposed to near the bottom where they currently were. Didn't seem to help much, if at all.

Then I took of my optical mouse and tried a standard rollerball type and that didn't seem to help either. Oh well. What sucks is I broke down and decided to see if I could go locally and buy a cheap generic type joystick just to get me through the few days until my new joystick comes. Naturally, I pick the day after thanksgiving the biggest shopping day of the year. When I saw the line of cars backed up in one of our local Target stores, I turned around and gave up. I'll just have to wait.

Thanks for the suggestions, all.

I fly strictly by mouse... Here are my Mouse settings if you'd like to give them a try: Roll=X axis, Pitch=Y axis, Throttle 1= Wheel, But 1=button 0, But 2=Button 1, But 3= Button 2....all other inputs=None........Hope this helps. My mouse is an optical mouse also.:aok

... Skeeto and the rest.

I tried your settings, Skeeto. I must have done something wrong. Now I can't get my gun, in an M16, moving at all.:(

Oh well. I've had enough of this. I'm going down to our local Target store. Someone told me they had joysticks there. I'll get something cheapo, with a USB plug, and use that until the one I ordered comes in the mail.

Thanks again.

I think because u use to use a stick it may have screwed it up for I play with a mouse and I don't have any problems like that unless i accidentally pull my internet cord...or u maybe ur not use to using a mouse.

As soon as theres no stick plugged, AH reverts back to mouse play. You have to restart the game from desktop though.

Lowering mouse sensitivity greatly helps

how would one go about lowering this mouse sensitivity?

Go on your clipboard to SETUP > PREFERENCES > ViewOptions. Theres a slider for mouse sensitivity. The further to the right, the more sensitive (ie the less moving space you need) the mouse is. I got mine about 2/3 of the way right. Click on OK after changing the setting.
