It is so easy to forget how beautiful that bird is.
Thanks!
:aok

Didn't someone set it down in a cornfield and do some fairly serious damage?

Yep, it was belly'd into a cornfield by his son and is still undergoing restoration.
-
Here is the site for the 'White Lightning' as well as the ability to donate to its rebuilding.
edit: it was sold, from what I read on the site.

think i could take him the D.A........:lol JK nice vid morph thanks

Blixen,
Yea sure, probably now hehehe.
Lefty Gardner did more with that aircraft here in Reno at the air races than Lockeed ever imagined possible. He was arguably the ultimate P-38 pilot, imho.
Hopefully Red Bull will get N25Y airworthy again, but it will just never be the same without Mr. Gardner at the controls.

Thanks for sharing the awesome film Morph.
I know I'm not the biggest "flight" guy in the game, but ya sure can't argue on how beautiful that plane is.
Awesome piece of history right there
-
I'm sporting wood.
Thanks for the post.
Time now for the "happy ending".
HONK!

There isnt another plane that looks like a 38, or as good as one when is screaming in for a low pass. Sorta brings a tear to your eye.

Morpheus,
When o when will I get to see the F4U film from this summers Corsairs over Connecticut?
Its not like you have a RL, drink some cokes, snort some coke, whatever you need to do...
Thanks!

haha. I guess I should finish that.
-
SEXY is all I can say about that
-
around 6:15 into the film, was the right engine OFF????
WTF did he do that for if so?
-
Yeah engine was off, he fired it back up before he started another vertical climb.
Its a 38 man, he is showing you how fuggin sexy it is.
-
Man, that's hot. Love those 1 engine manuevers.

why would he take any chances like that with a vintage irreplacable WWII plane?
i'm all for warbirds flying, but be smart and easy on those old boys, make them last... thats all
-
Do you know who he is? He is no dummy when it comes to P38's. lol.
I dont think anyone of us here can really say what is and isn't safe in a 38 in regards to what old man Gardner is doing with it.
And besides, even if the engine failed to restart, he can still land with 1. That is the beauty of the P38. :)
-
oh i understand that, it's just anyone can have an accident.
i guess he makes a point for toggling the engine in a dogfight in the MA though :aok :rofl
-
I've toggled an engine on before right before a fight, but never turned em off in a fight as the risk for a spin is too high generally.
For example a couple weeks ago, I took a ping to my #1 radiator and I turned it off manually before it over heated. Later, when a 109 bounced while rtb, I turned it on and was able to get enough speed up to get the angles and killed the 109.
The other BIG benefit is being able to extend you range, you can more than quadruple it by killing one engine and the other engine being set to 35" and 2300 RPM.

Great movie...
I would have rather listed to 15 minutes of twin super-charged Allisons than listen to freakin 'Free-bird' for the zillion and sixteenth time though..
Not that I have a problem with Skynard, but for cryin out loud, I can hear that tune any day of any week, but how often to I get to listen to a P38.
By the way, for anyone who has never heard a P-38 in real life (and yes, its very different from any recording) I can assure you it is far better than any music made with strings.

What about Bob Hoover? I think maybe he is arguably the ultimate anything pilot.

Schwing
Did I see the turbo vents opening and closing? I never knew they did that. This was a great era for piston engines. They advanced them to an art form. An Art that you bet your life on.
-
I was amazed to see him take off and raise the undercarriage while still at ground flying level. I guess he was relying on ground effect, because the smallest turbulence at that point would have meant 2 bent props and a very dead P38.

Yeah, I was impressed by that first thing. I fact, I don't think the back wheels were even off the ground before the nose gear startes retracting.

We need that skin. :)

Slimm50,
I have to agree that Mr. Bob Hoover is arguably the best "fly anything" guy around, even now into his 70's, but there is no way he could match Mr. Gardner when it comes to the P-38...close and on a different level, perhaps, but for E-management and skill in a 38...Lefty is my pick.
In my previous post, I was refering specifically to only his P-38, White Lightning.
Now for E management and general skill and ability in most anything else, my nod would go to Mr. Hoover, straw hat and all.
The really cool thing about each guy is that, unless they were in their aircraft, they both would always take a few minutes to say hello and talk to anyone who approached them.
